🗳️ Every Vote Counts: Mentor Council Race Heads to Recount After Slim Margin

Mentor Council Race Triggers Recount; School Board Contest Settled

A razor-thin margin has led to an automatic recount in the Mentor at-large City Council race. Certified election results show Brian Cook ahead of Annie Payne by just one vote — 5,554 to 5,553 — prompting Ohio’s mandated recount process. Barry Sneed finished third with 913 votes. The recount is scheduled to begin December 2.

The school board race, another closely watched contest, was also decided by a narrow margin. Daniel Hardesty secured the third and final at-large seat on the Mentor School Board with 7,193 votes, edging out Robert Izzo by only eight votes. The final certified results matched the unofficial tally, and Izzo has formally conceded, choosing not to pursue a recount.

The election cycle highlighted deep divisions in the community, with school board candidates split between two ideologically distinct slates. Despite this, the Board of Elections affirmed confidence in the integrity of the results, and officials emphasize that every vote counts.

The council recount must be completed within 10 days, and both races reflect just how impactful a handful of votes can be in local elections.

🛌🏻 Gratitude as Medicine: The Everyday Habit with Lifelong Benefits

Gratitude Changes Everything

If you discovered something that helped you get a better night’s sleep, lowered your blood pressure, allowed you to have fewer headaches and gastrointestinal issues, plus other benefits, would you try it?

I assume most people would answer with a resounding ‘yes’. If you did, then pick up a paper and pen and write down ten things you are grateful for in your life right now.

Multiple studies have shown that people with more grateful dispositions report fewer health complaints than their counterparts. A wonderful way to start feeling more grateful is to become aware of all of the people and situations in your life that you are thankful for. Writing the list down and then reading it out loud daily before starting each day can start you on the right path toward a feeling of gratitude.

Did you know that approximately 70 million people in the United States suffer from some sort of sleep issue? If you are part of that statistic, then you should definitely take steps toward creating a more grateful temperament.

In a study of just over 400 individuals, 40 percent of whom had clinically impaired sleep, more grateful people reported falling asleep more quickly sleeping longer, having better sleep quality and staying awake more easily during the day. There was also evidence that those who had a more thankful heart slept better because they had fewer negative thoughts and concentrated on positive times when they went to bed.

Gratitude is a key to not only physical health, but psychological well-being too. It can help with improving relationships, make people feel happier and potentially counteract depression and suicidal thoughts.

Being in a state of thankfulness and feeling the abundance in your life can buffer stress and increase the feeling of happiness. These positive emotions can have downstream positive influences on your health. It can foster and strengthen social relationships. A growing body of research strongly suggests that our connections to others can have tangible health benefits.

Gratitude involves expressing thanks or appreciation for something, from a gift to life itself. It is the recognition of the positive things in your life and how they affect you. This can range from acknowledging a beautiful flower you pass on the sidewalk to the feeling of thanks that comes from recovering from a serious illness. So how can you bring more of it into your life? Here are some suggestions you can start with today:

  • Journal-write down things that happen daily & what you give thanks for in your life

  • Pay attention to the little things in life like the birds in the trees, changing color of the leaves, noticing what makes you smile and laugh

  • Tell someone you’re grateful for them or for something they did, even if it was a long time ago

  • Do something kind for someone-a chore your spouse normally does, bake cookies for an elderly neighbor, pay for the next person in line’s coffee

  • Meditate on the positive aspects of your life

  • Give thanks through prayer

Nina Rodriguez Earns First "Glam Dunk" as Mentor Dominates Season Opener

Mentor opened the girls' basketball season with a statement win on their home court Tuesday night, cruising to a dominant 60-26 victory over the Brunswick Blue Devils.
