🗳️ Cook, Payne Await Final Outcome as Council Recount Begins

Recount triggered in Cook vs. Payne race; Hardesty confirmed for School Board

A recount is underway in the race for a Mentor City Council seat starting January 3, after certified election results showed Brian Cook leading Annie Payne by just one vote—5,554 to 5,553.

On election night, Payne had a narrow lead, but updated totals certified on November 25 flipped the result. The margin triggered an automatic recount, which began December 2. The Lake County Board of Elections is hand-counting 5% of ballots from randomly selected precincts and all 48 accepted provisional ballots.

Cook expressed confidence in the process and said he’s ready to serve. Payne, who won a previous school board race by only a few votes, said recounts are important to ensure accuracy, especially when ballots are misread by machines.

The Board of Elections will certify the recount results on December 9.

🍞 Lake County Council on Aging Delivers Over 30,000 Emergency Meals to Seniors

To help seniors maintain access to food during severe winter weather or unexpected closures, the Lake County Council on Aging delivered over 30,000 shelf-stable meals to older adults across the county.

The agency provided 25,750 emergency meals for seniors in congregate and home-delivered nutrition programs, plus 5,150 breakfast meals specifically for home-delivered clients. These meals are shelf-stable and require no refrigeration, giving seniors peace of mind in case of snowstorms or service disruptions.

This project was fully funded by the Jerome T. Osborne and Georgeanne S. Osborne Charitable Trust, which supported planning, procurement, and distribution. Their commitment to senior wellness—especially those living alone or with limited mobility—was key to the project’s success.

The Council also acknowledged the AWT Foundation in Mentor, which provided critical storage space that allowed for smooth logistics and timely delivery.

As winter approaches, the Council on Aging remains grateful for the Osborne Trust’s support and confident these meals will help safeguard the health and stability of the seniors it serves.

☃️ Get Ahead of the Storm: How to Prepare Your Home and Car for Lake County Winters

Stay Winter-Ready in Lake County with These Simple Safety Tips

Winter in Lake County can be as unpredictable as it is severe, with conditions that can shift quickly and create serious challenges for both homeowners and drivers. Preparing in advance can help minimize risk and ensure peace of mind. Here are some essential tips to help you get ready before the snow starts falling.

At Home:

  • Clear gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams and water damage.

  • Check that dryer and furnace exhaust vents are clean and unobstructed, as blockages can lead to carbon monoxide buildup or even fire hazards.

  • Inspect windows and doors for drafts. Repairing seals can improve comfort and cut down on heating bills (see yesterday’s issue for more details).

  • If your outdoor faucets aren’t frost-free, don’t forget to shut off their water supply to avoid burst pipes.

On the Road:

  • Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready. This includes checking the battery, tire tread, fluids, and heating system.

  • Equip your car with winter wiper blades and cold-resistant windshield washer fluid to maintain visibility in icy conditions.

  • Keep essential tools in your car, such as an ice scraper, snow shovel, and jumper cables.

  • Store a couple of bags of sand or kitty litter in the trunk. They can provide traction if you get stuck—and also help add weight to rear-wheel-drive vehicles.

  • For longer trips, pack an emergency kit with blankets, non-perishable food, water, and other necessities.

Being proactive now can help you avoid emergencies later. For more detailed information on winter preparedness, visit ready.gov.

🍎 Beyond Medication: 14 Ways to Ease Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) affects roughly 10% of Americans, disrupting sleep and diminishing quality of life with its uncomfortable nighttime sensations—tingling, twitching, burning, or the overwhelming urge to move the legs. Though medications exist to treat RLS, they can bring unwanted side effects like fatigue and weight gain, and often lose effectiveness over time. As a result, many sufferers turn to alternative therapies to find relief.

Here are 14 natural strategies, supported by research and patient experiences, that may help manage RLS symptoms:

1. Check Your Iron Levels

A significant number of RLS cases are linked to low iron stores in the brain. Testing for ferritin levels and supplementing under medical supervision may provide relief, especially when other minerals like magnesium, calcium, and folate are balanced as well.

2. Reassess Your Diet

Food sensitivities—particularly to gluten or MSG—can exacerbate RLS. Identifying and eliminating triggers, while also managing related health conditions such as hypertension or thyroid disorders, may ease symptoms.

3. Exercise Regularly

Moderate physical activity, especially aerobic or lower-body strength training, has been shown to reduce RLS severity. Gentle practices like Iyengar yoga can also improve sleep and overall well-being. However, it’s best to avoid intense workouts close to bedtime.

4. Stay Mentally Engaged

Keeping the mind occupied with activities like reading, puzzles, or engaging conversations can distract from RLS sensations and prevent anxiety from worsening symptoms.

5. Try Mindfulness Techniques

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has been effective for some in lowering symptom intensity. This approach encourages acceptance and mental preparation, helping individuals respond calmly when symptoms strike.

6. Review Medications

Certain medications—including antihistamines, antidepressants, and anti-nausea drugs—can aggravate RLS. A healthcare provider can help evaluate potential triggers.

7. Massage and Compression

Massage therapy targeting the lower legs may alleviate the urge to move and improve sleep. Similarly, wearing compression socks before bed has shown promise in reducing symptoms for many.

🏀 Lady Cougars Rally Late but Fall Short Against Chardon

Lake Catholic Girls Basketball Team Fell to Chardon in Road Matchup

The Lake Catholic Lady Cougars took their first loss of the season on December 1, falling 60-47 to the Chardon Hilltoppers in a non-league road contest.

Chardon started strong, taking a seven-point lead by the end of the first quarter. The Hilltoppers pulled away in the second, scoring 24 points and pushing the halftime score to 40-17.

Lake Catholic responded with a better second half, tightening defense and closing the gap, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

The loss drops Lake Catholic to 1-1. Chardon improves to 1-2 and will next face undefeated Madison. The Cougars will return home to host the North Rangers on December 3. North enters the matchup 1-1 after falling to North Royalton. No individual statistics were available at the time of this article.

🏒 Rough Day on Ice: Mentor Drops Two, Looks to Regroup Against Steele

Mentor Cardinals Drop Two Tough Matches in Back-to-Back Ice Hockey Losses

The Mentor Cardinals ice hockey team faced a pair of challenging matchups on November 30, falling to both the Rocky River Pirates and Walsh Jesuit Warriors in decisive fashion.

In their first contest, the Cardinals were overwhelmed by Rocky River, who cruised to a dominant 9-1 win. The Pirates controlled the pace from the opening puck drop, taking a 2-0 lead after the first period and extending it to 5-1 by the second intermission. The third period saw Rocky River pile on four more unanswered goals to seal the blowout victory.

Mentor managed just one goal in the matchup, but three players—Hayden Vallance, Beckett Swinehart, and Ruslan Sherstiuk—each registered a point. Goaltenders Luke Palmer and CJ Lobue split duties in net. Palmer played 21 minutes, making 9 saves on 13 shots, while Lobue saw 24 minutes of action, turning away 10 of 15 shots faced.

Later that day, Mentor struggled again in a 6-1 loss to Walsh Jesuit. The Cardinals were held scoreless until the final period, managing only a late goal to avoid the shutout. Will Norris, Joe Mackey, and Jacke Mackey each earned a point in the loss. Goaltender SJ Lobue played the entire game, facing a heavy workload with 32 shots on goal. He finished with 26 saves and six goals allowed.

The pair of defeats brings Mentor’s season record to 5-3-1. The Cardinals will look to bounce back when they host the Amherst Steele Comets on Friday, December 5.
