ā„ļø First Signs of Ice Appear on Lake Erie—Winter Wastes No Time

Lake Erie Sees Earliest Ice in 17 Years Amid Deep December Freeze

Winter is making itself known early this year—ice has already started forming on Lake Erie, marking the earliest appearance in 17 years.

The Crane Creek camera recently spotted the first signs of ice along the shoreline, with overall coverage just under 1%. While not much, it’s a strong signal of how cold December has been. Temperatures haven’t reached 40 degrees yet, compared to the usual mid-40s, allowing lake temperatures to drop quickly.

While the ice is thin and far from safe, it’s a welcome sight for ice fishing enthusiasts hoping for an early start. The National Weather Service reminds everyone that at least 4 inches of clear, new ice is needed for walking—and even then, caution is critical.

More cold air is expected, which means ice coverage will likely grow in the coming weeks. That could also reduce lake effect snow, as ice cover blocks the moisture supply needed to fuel it.

šŸšļøProtect Your Home From Roof to Foundation—Start With the Gutters

Is It Time to Clean Your Gutters? Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Wait -
Top 11 Reasons to Clean Those Gutters

Ignoring your gutters can lead to costly problems for your home. When clogged or damaged, gutters can’t properly direct water away from your house—leading to leaks, pests, structural damage, and more.

3 Steps to Cleaning Those Gutters:

  1. Gear up safely: Ladder, gloves, goggles, tarp, bucket, trowel.

  2. Remove debris: Scoop out debris and drop onto the tarp below.

  3. Flush downspouts: Use a hose to check flow. If blocked, clear the clog.

Here are the top 11 reasons to make gutter cleaning a priority on your home maintenance list.

1. Prevent Water Damage

Gutters direct water away from your home’s roof and siding. When blocked, water can seep into walls or ceilings, causing mold and stains. It can also push through roofing materials, especially when ice dams form in cold weather.

šŸ’° Average Water Damage Repair: $2,000–$5,000

2. Protect Your Foundation

Clogged gutters allow water to pool around your home’s base. Over time, this weakens the foundation and causes cracks, shifting, or settling, which leads to uneven floors and wall damage.

šŸ’° Foundation Repair: $2,000–$10,000+

3. Keep Pests Away

Standing water and decaying debris in clogged gutters attract insects, rodents, and mold. Regular cleaning prevents infestations that can quickly spread into your home.

šŸ’° Pest Infestation Costs: $300–$600

4. Avoid Roof Damage

Overflowing gutters can send water back under your shingles, causing leaks and rot. Prevent costly repairs by keeping water flowing away from your roof.

šŸ’° Roof Repair: $650–$1,100

5. Prevent Fascia Damage

Gutters heavy with debris and water can detach and damage the fascia board they’re mounted to. This weakens your roofing structure and aesthetics.

šŸ’° Fascia Repair: $600–$6,000

šŸ’ Mentor Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat Comets

Mentor Skates Past Steele 5–3 at Adam Hamilton Memorial Tournament

The Mentor Cardinals hockey team earned a 5–3 win over the Steele Comets on Sunday at the Adam Hamilton Memorial Tournament, overcoming an early 1–0 deficit after the first period. Mentor responded with a dominant second frame, outscoring Steele 4–1 to take control of the game before both teams traded goals in the third.

Nathan Andree sparked the offense with three assists, while Hayden Vallance scored twice, including the game‑winner. Ruslan Sherstiuk added a goal and an assist. Steele’s Vinny Kelley led his team with two goals.

Goalie CJ Lobue stopped 17 of 20 shots to secure the victory. Mentor improves to 7–5–1 and will take on Walsh Jesuit (6–3–1) on Friday, Dec. 12.

šŸˆ Hornets Dominate in Canton, Capture 8th Championship Since 2011

Kirtland reclaimed the Division VI state championship with a dominant 41-6 win over Hopewell-Loudon on Dec. 6. The Hornets rushed for 433 yards, held their opponent to just one score, and captured their eighth title in 14 years. John Silvestro ran for 255 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback Jake LaVerde delivered a standout two-way performance. After a rare loss in 2024, Kirtland is back on top—but they never truly left.
