🛟 Quick-Thinking Mentor Employees Honored by Red Cross
Mentor Rec Center Staff Honored for Life-Saving Response
Three staff members at the Mentor Community Recreation Center were recently recognized by the American Red Cross for their quick, life-saving actions earlier this year.
Aquatics Coordinator Kim Aikey and front desk staffers Sarah Escandon and Gabe Watson were honored for their response on January 10, when a man in his 20s collapsed on the indoor soccer field during a game. Watson immediately called 911 and alerted other staff. Aikey and Escandon quickly began CPR, sustaining the man until emergency responders arrived.
Their efforts were credited with helping to save his life.
The recognition event, held at the center, was attended by American Red Cross Regional CEO Mike Parks, Communications Director Christina Peters, and Mentor City Manager Ken Filipiak. The ceremony emphasized the impact of training, teamwork, and rapid response in emergencies.
🎖️ Lake County Joins Nationwide Wreaths Across America Remembrance
Painesville Community Honors Veterans During Wreaths Across America Ceremony
Braving freezing temperatures, residents gathered at Riverside Cemetery in Painesville on December 13 for Wreaths Across America, an annual event honoring U.S. veterans.
The ceremony was one of several held across Lake County and thousands nationwide. Organized locally with help from the New Connecticut chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the event brought together families, students, veterans, and civic groups.
The program featured a color presentation by Civil Air Patrol cadets, musical performances from Mentor High School students, and the reading of stories about two Vietnam veterans—brothers Charles and Bud Hood—buried at the cemetery.
After the ceremony, attendees placed wreaths on veterans’ graves, pausing to say each name aloud as a gesture of remembrance. Around 100 people participated at the site.
The Painesville event has grown over the years, expanding from Evergreen Cemetery to include Riverside and St. Mary Cemetery. Other ceremonies were held in Willoughby, Concord Township, and Leroy Township.
Wreaths Across America began in Maine in 1992 and now includes nearly 5,000 locations. Its mission—“Remember, Honor, Teach”—is carried out each December through local ceremonies.
Supporters can still sponsor wreaths through year-end, with a promotion offering two for the price of one. Details are available at wreathsacrossamerica.org/oh0061p.

🏠 Cold Outside, Mold Inside? How to Reduce Mold Risk in Your Home This Winter

How to Reduce Mold Risk in Winter: Practical Tips for Mentor Homeowners
When winter arrives in Mentor, we seal up our homes to stay warm—but that cozy indoor air can quietly create the perfect environment for mold. Cold outdoor temperatures combined with indoor moisture often lead to condensation, and mold thrives wherever moisture lingers. The good news? A few simple habits can greatly reduce your risk.
Start by keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. In winter, everyday activities like cooking, showering, and even breathing add moisture to the air. A small digital humidity gauge can help you keep tabs, and if levels creep up, a dehumidifier can make a big difference—especially in basements.
Always use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and let them run for 15–20 minutes after showers or heavy cooking. This pulls excess moisture outside instead of allowing it to settle on walls and ceilings. Speaking of moisture, wipe condensation off windows when you see it. Persistent damp window sills and frames are one of the most common winter mold trouble spots in Northeast Ohio homes.
Basements deserve extra attention this time of year. Running a dehumidifier and making sure water drains away from your foundation can help prevent hidden mold growth behind storage items or drywall.
Inside living spaces, keep furniture a few inches away from exterior walls. This allows air to circulate and prevents cold-wall condensation from building up behind couches and dressers.
Finally, don’t forget the attic. Make sure bathroom fans vent outdoors—not into the attic—and that attic ventilation is clear. Proper airflow helps prevent moisture buildup and unseen mold above your ceiling.
A little prevention now can save costly repairs—and headaches—later this winter.

🏒 Mackey Brothers Power Mentor Past Bowling Green in 6-2 Comeback Win
Mentor Cardinal ice hockey turned the tide in commanding fashion on the road, securing a 6-2 victory over the Bowling Green Bobcats. Despite trailing 2-1 after the first period, Mentor completely shut down the Bobcats for the remainder of the game while racking up five unanswered goals.
The offensive push was spearheaded by the Mackey brothers. Jake Mackey delivered a standout performance, tallying a hat trick and adding an assist for a total of four points. His brother, Joe Mackey, added a goal and two assists of his own, helping Mentor take full control of the game.
Additional contributions came from Nathan Andree and Aiden Gibson, who each posted two points. Hayden Vallance notched the decisive goal that would eventually stand as the game-winner.
In net, Luke Palmer anchored Mentor’s defense with a strong showing, turning away 27 of 29 shots. His effort helped preserve the Cardinals' lead and secure the win.
With this victory, Mentor improves to an 8-6-1 record on the season, continuing to build momentum as the team pushes deeper into the schedule.
🏀 Second-Half Surge Powers Lake Catholic Boys Past Lions
Lake Catholic earned a hard-fought 76-58 win over St. Martin de Porres on Saturday, pulling away in the second half of a physical matchup at John Carroll University. The Cougars overcame a competitive first half, using strong execution on both ends of the court to secure their second win of the season.
The opening half was marked by aggressive defense and back-and-forth scoring, with neither team able to gain much separation. However, after the break, Lake Catholic found its offensive rhythm and tightened up defensively, outpacing the Lions down the stretch and finishing with a season-high point total.
The victory improves the Cougars’ record to 2-2. They’ll return to the court on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. for a holiday clash against Benedictine, who comes in at 3-2. Lake Catholic will look to carry momentum into the matchup.
