🦅 Lake County Eagles Soar: Part of Statewide Conservation Comeback

Lake County Joins Ohio’s Bald Eagle Comeback with 14 Active Nests
The bald eagle, once nearly extinct in Ohio, is making a strong comeback—and Lake County is part of that success. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), there are now 964 active bald eagle nests across 87 of Ohio's 88 counties, a 36% increase since the last count in 2020.
Lake County is home to 14 active nests, a big leap from decades ago when eagle sightings were rare statewide. In 1979, only four nesting pairs remained in all of Ohio. Today, eagles are nesting near local lakes, rivers, and natural areas—thanks to years of dedicated conservation.
The 2025 census was made possible by over 1,800 reports from citizen scientists, with ODNR staff verifying nest locations. A nest is considered active if it contains eggs, eaglets, or a brooding adult.
The highest concentrations remain in counties along Lake Erie and major waterways, including Ottawa (112 nests), Sandusky (61), and Erie (40). Lake County’s rising numbers reflect the expanding eagle habitat across northern Ohio.
The bald eagle was removed from the federal endangered species list in 2007 and from Ohio’s in 2012. ODNR officials credit habitat protection, environmental laws, and public involvement for the species’ rebound.
Today, spotting a bald eagle in Lake County is no longer a rare event—it’s a symbol of how community conservation and nature protection can lead to lasting results.
♻️ Give Your Tree a Second Life: Mentor’s Holiday Recycling Program
Mentor Offers Christmas Tree Recycling Through January 31
After the holidays, Mentor residents can recycle their live Christmas trees at designated drop-off locations in city parks.
Trees may be dropped off at the following parks: Edward R. Walsh Park (7221 Bellflower Road), Eleanor B. Garfield Park (7967 Mentor Avenue), Donald E. Krueger Park (7556 Chillicothe Road), and Morton Park (9325 Rosemary Lane).
All trees must be free of decorations, tinsel, and plastic bags before drop-off. The collection sites will remain open through January 31, 2026, allowing residents plenty of time to dispose of trees responsibly.
The recycling program helps reduce landfill waste and allows trees to be reused for mulch or other landscaping purposes, supporting the city’s sustainability efforts.
💧 How Everyday Choices at Home Help Protect Lake Erie’s Waters

Protecting Our Watershed Starts at Home: Small Actions, Big Impact on Lake Erie
Every neighborhood is part of a watershed—land where rain and melted snow flow into a shared body of water. In our region, that water is Lake Erie, a vital resource for drinking water and recreation.
As rain and snowmelt move across roofs, driveways, streets, and lawns, they collect pollutants from everyday life. This runoff passes through creeks and streams, carrying vehicle fluids, lawn debris, pet waste, road salt, and litter into the lake.
These pollutants harm water quality and aquatic life. But with a few mindful habits, residents can make a real difference.
Proper disposal of household chemicals and motor oil is essential—never pour them into storm drains. Pet waste should be picked up year-round, and eco-friendly household products are a safer choice. When salting sidewalks, remember a single coffee mug of salt can treat 250 square feet. Sweep up the excess to prevent runoff.
Vehicle maintenance also helps prevent leaks, and clearing leaves from gutters and downspouts keeps runoff clean and flowing properly.
Small efforts at home add up. By caring for our surroundings, we help keep Lake Erie healthy for ourselves and future generations.

🛣️ 4 Cozy Getaways for a 48-Hour Escape After Christmas
If You Escaped for 48 Hours After Christmas… Where Would You Go?
The gifts are unwrapped. The leftovers are chilling. The house is somehow both cozy and chaotic. After the holiday hustle, what if you hit pause — just for 48 hours — and made a quiet escape before the New Year?
We picked four dreamy winter getaways, each within 2–4 hours' drive, perfect for a two-night retreat between Dec. 28–31. Whether you're craving snow-covered serenity, charming small towns, or off-season magic without the crowds, here’s where to go when you need to disappear (in the best way).
1. Amish Country, OH — For Peace and Pastries
Drive time: ~2 hours from Columbus
Mood: Slow, snowy, and deeply peaceful
After the bustle of December, Ohio’s Amish Country offers the kind of quiet that restores. Picture horse-drawn buggies on frost-lined roads, country stores selling warm fry pies, and handwoven quilts that feel like a hug. Explore the snowy trails around Walnut Creek, sip mulled cider at a local inn, and let the rhythm of simpler times help you reset. Bonus: Post-holiday sales in the shops of Berlin and Sugarcreek are worth browsing — if you’re still in a gift-giving mood.
2. Hocking Hills in Winter — For Ice, Pines, and Solitude
Drive time: ~1.5 hours from Columbus
Mood: Winter wilderness retreat
Hocking Hills transforms into a frosty wonderland come late December. Frozen waterfalls glisten in Old Man’s Cave, and quiet trails wind through snow-dusted pines and sandstone cliffs. Book a cozy cabin with a hot tub and views of the woods, and enjoy the deep stillness of nature in hibernation. Winter hiking is more magical than you think — just bring your boots and a thermos of cocoa.
3. Frankenmuth, MI — For Bavarian Charm & Post-Christmas Glow
Drive time: ~3.5 hours from Cleveland
Mood: Storybook town meets winter festivity
Frankenmuth might be best known for Bronner’s, the world’s largest Christmas store, but the town stays festive even after Dec. 25. With twinkling lights still aglow, horse-drawn carriage rides through “Little Bavaria,” and hearty German fare at the ready, it’s a great spot to hold on to the holiday spirit a little longer. Don’t miss a snowy stroll by the covered bridge or a cozy evening at one of the town’s historic inns.
4. Niagara Falls (Off-Season) — For Mist and Mystery
Drive time: ~4 hours from Buffalo
Mood: Moody, majestic, and unexpectedly romantic
Winter strips the crowds from Niagara, leaving behind a moody, cinematic version of the iconic falls. Steam rises from the churning water into frosty air, and ice clings to railings like natural sculpture. Bundle up and explore a quieter side of this famous destination — where the off-season reveals its own kind of magic. Stay at a hotel with a view and let the roar of the water lull you into winter calm.
Whether you’re looking for calm, charm, or cold-weather beauty, these escapes are your ticket to two days of winter bliss. Just pack a sweater, a snack, and a sense of adventure.

🏀 Cavaliers Outmatched as Rockets Roll to 117-100 Victory
The Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the Houston Rockets on Saturday night, losing 117-100 after the game slipped away in the second half.
Cleveland cut a sizable deficit to 12 midway through the third quarter, but Houston responded with a decisive 15-0 run. The Cavaliers went scoreless for over four minutes during that stretch, allowing the Rockets to extend their lead to 27 points by the end of the third.
Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 16 points on 7-of-17 shooting, but the offense struggled to gain momentum. Darius Garland fueled a brief run in the third, but it was quickly stalled by Houston’s fast-paced scoring and a technical foul on head coach Kenny Atkinson.
Houston’s bench outperformed Cleveland, with Jaylon Tyson delivering 23 points and 14 rebounds. Kevin Durant scored 30 points in three quarters before sitting out the fourth, while Reed Sheppard contributed 18 points and eight assists.
After falling behind late in the first quarter, Cleveland never regained the lead and couldn't produce consistent stops or offense. The Cavaliers have now dropped five of their last seven games.
They continue their road trip Monday night against the San Antonio Spurs.
