Multiple Rounds of Snow to Impact Northeast Ohio Through New Year’s Day

Northeast Ohio is bracing for several rounds of snow this week, with system and lake-effect snow expected to disrupt travel through New Year’s Day.

As of Tuesday evening, lingering lake-effect snow bands continue to bring bursts of heavy snowfall. A widespread system snow arrives overnight and continues into Wednesday morning, with lows near 20 degrees.

Lake-effect snow is expected to return midday Wednesday, followed by another round of system snow later in the afternoon and evening. Snow bands and squalls could sharply reduce visibility, making New Year’s Eve travel risky.

Temperatures will remain in the 20s, keeping roads icy.

More lake-effect snow develops late Wednesday night into New Year’s Day, especially across the snowbelt. Some areas could see over a foot of accumulation by Friday morning as snow continues in spots through early Friday.

Quieter, more stable weather moves in Friday afternoon and lasts through the weekend. Temperatures stay below freezing until Monday or Tuesday, when a gradual warmup is expected.

šŸ¦… Bald Eagles Expected to Rebuild After Nest Falls at Mentor Marsh

Windy Weather Knocks Down Bald Eagle Nest at Mentor Marsh

Strong winds in Northeast Ohio this week didn’t just rattle homes—they also disrupted local wildlife. On Monday morning, visitors to Mentor Marsh Nature Preserve noticed that a familiar bald eagle nest was missing from its usual treetop perch.

The nest, previously built high in a tree, appears to have been blown down over the weekend. This isn’t the first time high winds have destroyed a nest in that very tree.

Bald eagles have been nesting at Mentor Marsh since 2010, becoming a conservation success story and a draw for birdwatchers and photographers. Despite the setback, those who follow the eagles are confident they’ll rebuild.

Fortunately, the nest was empty at the time—no eggs or young were present. Since eagles typically begin laying eggs in February, there’s still time for the pair to reconstruct their home. Their experience and resilience suggest they’ll recover quickly.

Conservationists hope the eagles will choose a sturdier, more sheltered spot for the next nest, better protected from harsh weather.

šŸ“° Hidden in Plain Sight: Mentor's Historic Stone Tower Tells a Century-Old Story

Mentor History Trail Spotlight: The Jackson Street Stone Tower

Just west of Heisley Road on Jackson Street stands the Jackson Street Stone Tower, a quiet landmark with over a century of history. Though thousands pass it daily, few know its backstory.

Built in the early 1900s by local rosarian Michel Horvath, the tower supported a working farm that also featured rose fields and a cider mill. It was designed to serve both as an icehouse and a water tower.

In winter, ice was harvested from Lake Erie and stored in the tower’s base, keeping items cool through summer. Meanwhile, water from a nearby spring was pumped to the upper level and gravity-fed through pipes to power the farm's cider mill.

As refrigeration and city water became standard, the tower fell out of use. But thanks to its solid stone construction, it endured. A 2007 restoration helped preserve it as a symbol of Mentor’s agricultural past.

Though the tower sits on private property at 6653 Spring Gardens Drive and isn’t publicly accessible, it remains visible from Jackson Street—a historic piece of the landscape hiding in plain sight.

Here’s an un-boring way to invest that billionaires have quietly leveraged for decades

If you have enough money that you think about buckets for your capital…

Ever invest in something you know will have low returns—just for the sake of diversifying?

CDs… Bonds… REITs… :(

Sure, these ā€œboringā€ investments have some merits. But you probably overlooked one historically exclusive asset class:

It’s been famously leveraged by billionaires like Bezos and Gates, but just never been widely accessible until now.

It outpaced the S&P 500 (!) overall WITH low correlation to stocks, 1995 to 2025.*

It’s not private equity or real estate. Surprisingly, it’s postwar and contemporary art.

And since 2019, over 70,000 people have started investing in SHARES of artworks featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso through a platform called Masterworks.

  • 23 exits to date

  • $1,245,000,000+ invested

  • Annualized net returns like 17.6%, 17.8%, and 21.5%

šŸš¶šŸ»ā€āž”ļø The Simplest Way to Lose Weight Without Giving Up Your Life

Weight Loss Without Extreme Dieting: What Actually Works Long Term

If you’ve ever felt tired of dieting, you’re not alone. Most Americans aren’t failing at weight loss — they’re exhausted by it. The solution isn’t another plan that removes entire food groups. It’s learning how to make a few smart adjustments that don’t take over your life.

One of the most overlooked tools for weight loss is walking, especially when done consistently. Walking doesn’t spike hunger the way intense workouts can, which makes it easier to stay in a calorie deficit without feeling deprived. A 30–45 minute brisk walk most days — whether around your neighborhood, at the Mentor Lagoons, the mall, or even split into two shorter walks — improves fat metabolism and insulin sensitivity without stressing your body.

Another key is protein timing, not just protein amount. Most people eat too little protein early in the day, which leads to cravings by mid-afternoon. Shifting more protein to breakfast and lunch helps stabilize appetite and reduces nighttime snacking — without tracking every calorie.

Instead of obsessing over calories, aim for calorie awareness. That means knowing which foods quietly add up (liquid calories, mindless snacks, oversized portions), while letting go of perfection. Sustainable weight loss comes from reducing friction, not adding rules.

Finally, avoid the trap of ā€œstarting overā€ every Monday. Weight loss improves when habits are treated like routines, not moral tests. Miss a walk? No problem. Eat a heavier meal? Move on. Consistency beats intensity every time.

The best plan is the one you can repeat — even on busy weeks.

šŸ€ Katava’s Double-Double Leads Cardinals Past Lincoln Park

Katava powers Cardinals with a dominant performance

The Mentor Cardinals boys basketball team earned an 84-70 win over Lincoln Park Performing Arts (Midland, PA) on Monday, pulling away in the second half after a tight first two quarters.

Mentor led just 39-36 at halftime, but a strong third quarter pushed the lead to 63-51. The Cardinals maintained control in the fourth to secure a 14-point victory.

Senior Tony Katava led the way with 25 points on nearly 50% shooting. He dominated the boards with 17 rebounds—eight offensive—and added two steals and an assist.

Sophomore Jack Kennedy contributed 21 points, along with five rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals. Fellow sophomores Logan Lynch and Connor Witte each added 10 points, with Witte also collecting seven rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.

With the win, Mentor improves to 5-1 on the season. They were scheduled to face Woodland Hills (5-3) on December 30, though results have yet to be reported.
