🌶️ Think Your Chili’s the Best? Prove It at Mentor’s Winter Cook-Off!
As part of the City of Mentor’s annual Chill-Out Winter Festival, local chefs and chili enthusiasts are invited to turn up the heat at a sizzling community competition. The Chili Cook-Off, set for Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, gives participants a chance to claim the title of “Best Chili in Mentor.”
Open to home cooks, restaurants, and businesses, the contest is a flavorful highlight of the festival. Contestants will prepare their chili on-site under a heated canopy, with electricity provided to keep pots simmering in the wintry weather. Guests can expect bold flavors, community spirit, and friendly rivalry, all taking place at the City of Mentor Amphitheater, 8500 Munson Road.
Organizers say two competition spots are still available, encouraging anyone with a standout recipe to join the fun. The event showcases local culinary talent and brings residents together for one of Northeast Ohio’s most festive winter traditions.
For more details or to enter the competition, interested participants can reach out to event coordinator Dave Duricky via email at [email protected] or by calling (440) 974-5727.
What investment is rudimentary for billionaires but ‘revolutionary’ for 70,571+ investors entering 2026?
Imagine this. You open your phone to an alert. It says, “you spent $236,000,000 more this month than you did last month.”
If you were the top bidder at Sotheby’s fall auctions, it could be reality.
Sounds crazy, right? But when the ultra-wealthy spend staggering amounts on blue-chip art, it’s not just for decoration.
The scarcity of these treasured artworks has helped drive their prices, in exceptional cases, to thin-air heights, without moving in lockstep with other asset classes.
The contemporary and post war segments have even outpaced the S&P 500 overall since 1995.*
Now, over 70,000 people have invested $1.2 billion+ across 500 iconic artworks featuring Banksy, Basquiat, Picasso, and more.
How? You don’t need Medici money to invest in multimillion dollar artworks with Masterworks.
Thousands of members have gotten annualized net returns like 14.6%, 17.6%, and 17.8% from 26 sales to date.

🏡 New Bond Order Targets Mortgage Rates—Market Reaction Uncertain
Trump’s $200 Billion Mortgage Bond Plan Could Nudge Rates
President Trump has approved a $200 billion purchase of mortgage-backed securities, a move intended to ease mortgage rates and improve affordability for homebuyers. The policy directs housing agencies such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to increase demand for these securities, which can influence borrowing costs.
Mortgage rates are influenced by a range of factors, including inflation, Treasury yields, investor demand, and broader economic conditions. When demand for mortgage-backed securities increases, yields often fall, which can result in lower mortgage rates. This strategy has been used in past efforts to support the housing market, including during economic downturns.
While the bond purchase is designed to support rate reductions, some analysts say the overall effect may be limited. The mortgage market is large, and even sizable interventions have historically moved rates by only small margins. Researchers from the Federal Reserve note that such actions typically produce modest and temporary rate shifts.
For first-time buyers, even small changes in rates can affect monthly payments or qualifying thresholds. However, any increase in buyer demand resulting from a rate dip could also contribute to rising home prices, especially in markets with low inventory.
Housing experts advise buyers to consider broader financial factors beyond interest rates. Elements such as credit readiness, down payment resources, and local market conditions often have a greater impact on overall affordability. In addition, assistance programs—such as grants or low-interest loans—may help offset high upfront costs.
While the bond order may exert some downward pressure on rates, market reactions will depend on a combination of economic indicators and investor expectations. Buyers are encouraged to assess their own financial situation and long-term plans when making mortgage decisions.

🏀 Rodriguez, McKinney Combine for 52 as Mentor Girls Cruise Past Brunswick
Rodriguez and McKinney Power Mentor to Dominant Victory Over Brunswick
The Mentor Cardinals continued their strong season with a decisive 69-41 win over the Brunswick Blue Devils. Nina Rodriguez and freshman Ashlyn McKinney led the way, combining for 52 of Mentor’s points.
Rodriguez sparked the Cardinals early, scoring five of the team’s first seven points. A steal and layup from McKinney extended the lead to 14-5. Although Brunswick briefly cut it to 14-9, Mentor responded with a 9-0 run fueled by forced turnovers, ending the first quarter firmly in control.
The second quarter saw Mentor extend its lead to 29-9. Brunswick mounted a brief 8-2 run, but Rodriguez and McKinney closed the half strong, pushing the score to 36-17. Rodriguez tallied 17 points before the break.
Brunswick trimmed the gap to 11 in the third quarter behind plays from Adaya Collenette and Amya Fluellen, but Mentor quickly responded with a 7-0 run, restoring momentum and entering the final period up 49-31.
In the fourth, Mentor pulled away for good. Rodriguez finished with 29 points, while McKinney added 23 in one of her top games this season. Mentor’s depth and intensity proved too much, improving their record to 11-1. Brunswick dropped to 7-6.
🏀 Mentor Boys Start Fast, But Brunswick’s Experience Wins Out
Mentor Falls to State-Ranked Brunswick in GCC Matchup
Mentor’s boys basketball team faced a tough challenge at home on Jan. 9, falling 77-56 to a veteran Brunswick squad ranked No. 6 in the state. The Cardinals, featuring a young core led by sophomores, started strong but couldn't hold off the Blue Devils’ size and scoring depth.
After opening with a 6-0 lead, Mentor was hit with a 14-0 run by Brunswick and trailed for the rest of the game. Senior Tony Katava and sophomore Logan Lynch provided early momentum, combining for all of Mentor’s points in the opening minutes.
Brunswick controlled the pace and capitalized on early foul trouble for Mentor. Despite solid inside work from Katava and Lynch, Mentor struggled from long range, converting just 2 of 16 three-point attempts. The Cardinals trailed 39-23 at halftime.
Mentor opened the second half with another strong push, trimming the deficit to 12, but Brunswick quickly responded and extended the lead to 56-37 by the end of the third. The Cardinals played hard throughout but were outpaced in transition and on the boards.
Katava led Mentor with 20 points, while Lynch added 17. Sophomore point guard Jack Kennedy, the team's offensive leader this season, was held to 11 points as Brunswick defended him closely. Mentor shot 39% from the field and was edged in rebounding, 30-27.
The loss drops Mentor to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in Greater Cleveland Conference play. The Cardinals return to action next week with games at Medina on Jan. 16 and at home vs. Rhodes on Jan. 17.
