❄️ School Closures - Arctic Blast Brings Snow and Sub-Zero Wind Chills to Northeast Ohio

Mentor Public Schools, Lake Catholic and Mentor Christian School were all confirmed as closed for today due to the weather.

The wintry weather pattern will remain in place through Thursday morning, with widespread lake-effect snow expected to impact the early commute. By the afternoon, snow showers will shift east into the traditional snow belt and gradually taper off into the evening. Additional snow accumulations could reach 2-8”.

Temperatures will remain locked in the teens throughout the day Thursday, with wind chills near zero, making for a bitterly cold day across the region.

This cold snap isn't going anywhere soon. While temperatures may briefly rebound into the low 30s on Friday, another arctic front arriving Saturday will bring colder air once again. Highs from Sunday through Tuesday are forecast to remain at or below 20 degrees, with additional rounds of snow likely on Friday, Saturday, and Monday.

❄️ Mentor Chill Out Brings Ice, Fire, and Family Fun to Civic Center Saturday

Mentor Chill Out Festival Returns with Family Fun, Fireworks, and Frosty Delights

Mentor’s popular winter celebration, the Mentor Chill Out, is set to return on January 17 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Mentor Civic Center Complex, offering a full afternoon of seasonal fun and festive activities for all ages.

Now in its seventh year, the event has become a winter tradition in the city, giving families a reason to get outdoors and embrace the season. Visitors can enjoy ice sculptures, live carving demonstrations, and outdoor ice skating, as well as winter crafts, sledding (weather permitting), and the always-entertaining Zamboni Pull.

For indoor and cozy fun, attendees can warm up with hot cider and hot chocolate, or explore a variety of adult beverages for purchase. Specialty drinks include espresso vodka hot chocolate, cinnamon whiskey cider, and a creative take on the old fashioned, featuring a frozen marshmallow in place of ice. A full range of non-alcoholic options will also be available.

Entertainment continues with a video game truck and a Chili Cook-Off starting at 2 p.m. Those interested in entering the competition can call 440-974-5727 for details. Food vendors will also be on site throughout the day.

As evening falls, the Chill Out builds to a dramatic conclusion with a fiery ice display, where large blocks of ice filled with wood pallets are set ablaze — a unique visual spectacle. The event wraps up with a fireworks show, bringing the winter celebration to a colorful close.

The Mentor Chill Out has steadily grown in popularity, offering a flexible schedule of activities that encourages residents to come and go as they please. Regardless of snow or sunshine, the festival continues to draw families year after year.

📰 Public Input Sought on Mentor EV Charging Station Plan at Civic Center

The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA), alongside the FHWA and the City of Mentor, is proposing the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the Civic Center Complex in Mentor, located at Civic Center Boulevard and Munson Road.

Part of NOACA’s Phase 2 EV Charging Program, the project includes two Level 2 chargers and two DC Fast Chargers across one of three possible parking lots at the Municipal City Buildings. The installation would occupy about four parking spaces and take just one to two days to complete. Access to the Civic Center Complex will remain open, and no detours will be required.

Because the site is a protected public recreational facility, it falls under federal preservation laws. NOACA and the City of Mentor have reviewed the project and found no adverse impacts on the park’s recreational use. Measures such as scheduling work during off-peak hours, restoring disturbed areas, and maintaining pedestrian safety will be implemented.

The FHWA is proposing a de minimis impact determination, meaning any effects are considered minor. This finding depends on public feedback and final approval from the City of Mentor. Residents can submit comments until January 19, 2026.

Comments can be submitted to Allison Bunce, Transportation Planner, Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinator Agency, [email protected]

🐶 Sharon Stone Adopts Rescue Puppy Mo After Red Carpet Encounter at Astra Awards

Sharon Stone Adds a Furry Family Member After Heartwarming Encounter at Astra Awards

Sharon Stone’s appearance at the 2026 Astra Awards turned into a life-changing moment—not just for her, but for one lucky rescue puppy. While arriving at the event in Los Angeles on January 9, the acclaimed actress met Mo, an 8-week-old pit bull mix who was among several adoptable pets at the ceremony thanks to a collaboration between Petco Love and The Lovejoy Foundation.

Stone, who was honored with the Timeless Award at the ceremony hosted by the Hollywood Creative Alliance, was instantly drawn to Mo on the red carpet. After spending time with the puppy and video calling her youngest son, Quinn, to get his blessing, Stone made the decision to adopt.

Mo had arrived at the event with two of her siblings, all survivors of a difficult early life. Their presence at the Astra Awards was part of an annual initiative by Petco Love to spotlight rescue animals at high-profile events. Now in its fourth year, the program aims to raise awareness and encourage adoptions through joyful celebrity interactions.

Following the adoption, Stone shared how much happiness the new pup has brought into their household. She believes that having a pet is not only fun but also an important part of raising children, offering companionship and helping build character.

Mo is now settling into her new home as Quinn’s dog, with a future full of love, comfort, and play ahead.

🏀 Cavaliers Roll Over 76ers Behind Mitchell’s Big Night; Garland Hurt

Mitchell Shines as Cavs Rout 76ers; Garland Leaves with Injury

The Cleveland Cavaliers dominated the Philadelphia 76ers on the road, earning a 133-107 win led by Donovan Mitchell’s 35 points. Cleveland controlled the game early and extended their lead throughout, even after losing guard Darius Garland to a foot injury in the third quarter.

Garland, who scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, left the game after injuring his right foot while diving for a loose ball. The injury is a concern given his recent recovery from offseason toe surgery that slowed his early season.

De'Andre Hunter and Evan Mobley each added 17 points for Cleveland, with Mobley also grabbing 13 rebounds. The Cavaliers led 60-47 at halftime and pushed the margin to 22 in the fourth, sending fans toward the exits.

Philadelphia struggled to keep pace. Joel Embiid reached 13,000 career points, finishing with 20, while Paul George added 17. A brief third-quarter run cut into the lead, but the momentum faded quickly. Embiid also had a scare after diving into the crowd for a loose ball.

The Sixers’ tough night continued when Dom Barlow left with a back contusion after a hard fall and did not return. The teams face off again on Friday.
