🚨 Swatting Hoax Triggers Police Surge at Various Area Businesses

A wave of false emergency reports disrupted several Lake County retailers Friday evening, prompting a large-scale police response that may have begun at the Giant Eagle in Painesville Township.

Around 5:15 p.m., the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a possible active shooter at the store on Mentor Avenue, near the Lake County Fairgrounds. The caller claimed to be speaking with someone inside who believed a shooting was underway and said they could hear gunfire in the background.

Deputies rushed to the scene with support from neighboring law enforcement agencies. After quickly entering the store, they confirmed there was no shooting or disturbance of any kind.

An eyewitness described seeing a significant emergency response, with numerous police vehicles and ambulances outside the store. Despite the initial panic, the scene was secure, and no injuries were reported.

Shortly after, reports of other area retailers — including Meijer and Walmart in Mentor — were also targeted with similar false reports. Initial reports from an employee on the scene was that at least one of the threats, believed to be a bomb threat, had been phoned in from out of state.

Investigators suspect these incidents were part of a broader swatting attempt — a dangerous hoax that aims to trigger major law enforcement reactions under false pretenses.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the source and potential connections between the calls.

🍮 Belle Was Right — The Grey Stuff Is Delicious (Here’s How to Make It)

the grey stuff

If you’ve ever watched Beauty and the Beast, you probably remember that unforgettable dinner scene — and the famous line urging Belle to “try the grey stuff.” Good news: you don’t need a singing candelabra like Lumière to enjoy it at home.

This playful dessert is basically a cookies-and-cream mousse, and it’s as easy as it is crowd-pleasing. Creamy vanilla pudding, fluffy whipped topping, and crushed chocolate sandwich cookies come together for a light, sweet treat that looks fancy but takes almost no effort. It’s perfect for movie nights…

🫓 Bring Middle-earth to Your Hike with Homemade Lembas Bread

🏀 Suns Sear Cavaliers with Hot Shooting, End Cleveland’s Win Streak

The Cleveland Cavaliers saw their five-game winning streak come to an end Friday night with a 126-113 loss to the Phoenix Suns, wrapping up a tough road matchup. Turnovers and a third-quarter collapse proved costly for Cleveland, who fell to 29-21 on the season.

Despite a close first half that ended with the Suns up 52-47, the Cavaliers struggled to maintain control. Phoenix surged in the third, outscoring Cleveland 45-32 and building a lead that would grow to 30 early in the fourth quarter. Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson was ejected during that stretch after receiving two technical fouls.

De’Andre Hunter led the Cavs with 17 points, while Donovan Mitchell and Jaylon Tyson each added 16. Mitchell’s night was hampered by eight turnovers, part of the team’s 21 total—15 of which came in the first half.

Phoenix played without Devin Booker but found plenty of firepower behind Dillon Brooks, who scored 27 points after dropping 40 the previous night. The Suns hit 23 three-pointers and improved to 30-19.

Cleveland now heads to Portland for a Sunday night matchup, looking to bounce back.

🏀 Mentor’s Hot Shooting Sinks Shaker Heights in Lopsided Win

The Mentor boys basketball team rolled past Shaker Heights, 88-57, on Jan. 30 in a decisive Greater Cleveland Conference win. The Cardinals improved to 11-4 overall and 6-3 in league play, continuing their strong midseason surge.

Mentor’s defense set the tone early, forcing 22 turnovers—16 in the first half—and converting them into fast-break points. The Cardinals jumped to a 33-10 lead in the second quarter and led 58-30 at halftime.

Bernard Gnjatic paced the offense with 24 points, hitting six threes. Nate Sabin added 15 off the bench, while Jack Kennedy, Tony Katava, and Connor Witte also reached double digits. Mentor shot 62% from the field and hit 12-of-30 from three-point range.

🏀 Rodriguez Leads the Charge as Mentor Dominates Shaker Heights 79-19

Lady Cardinals Basketball

The Mentor Lady Cardinals delivered a dominant performance Friday night, defeating Shaker Heights 79-19 in a commanding Greater Cleveland Conference victory. With the win, Mentor improved to 17-1 overall and remained undefeated in the conference at 12-0.
