🏛️ Mentor Council Advances Major Projects, Aids Displaced Residents

City of Mentor
At its February 3 meeting, Mentor City Council approved several key initiatives, focusing on public infrastructure, community safety, and future governance.
Council authorized a $2.2 million advance to support the construction of a new observation tower at the lagoons and allocated $200,000 to upgrade mobile data terminals in police patrol cars. A proposed charter amendment—to remove residency requirements for the city’s law director—was approved for placement on the May 5 ballot, aiming to expand the pool of qualified candidates as the current director prepares to retire after 23 years of service.
Council also approved the final phase of the Mentor Heights subdivision on Chillicothe Road, adding 27 homes and preserving mature trees along the roadway. In response to a fire that displaced residents of 68 units at Parkhouse Apartments, the city coordinated with the Red Cross, United Way, and building management to provide temporary housing. Repairs are expected to take one to six months.
Officials also addressed winter road conditions, noting ample salt reserves and an expected increase in repair funding. Council made several appointments to city commissions and boards before adjourning to executive session to discuss land acquisition.
Mentor’s leadership continues balancing growth, emergency response, and infrastructure resilience.

📚 Mentor’s First Library Lives On Through Preservation and Purpose
The roots of Mentor Public Library stretch back to February 1819, when a small collection of 79 books was shared among private homes. Over time, the community’s passion for literacy grew stronger.
In 1889, residents formed the Mentor Village Library Board, led by James R. Garfield, son of President Garfield. The board aimed to create a public library and reading room. Spearheaded by Lucretia Garfield and the Garfield family, local fundraising efforts made the dream a reality. In 1903, the first permanent library was completed at the corner of Mentor Avenue and Center Street. Designed in New England style by Abram Garfield, another of the president’s sons, the building quickly became a central community fixture.
The library served residents for 57 years, gradually upgrading with electric lighting, plumbing, and other amenities. In 1956, voters approved a bond issue for a larger, modern library. The new building opened in 1957 at 8215 Mentor Avenue, where it continues to operate today.
The original 1903 library, now on the National Register of Historic Places, was moved in 1960 to 7300 Center Street. Today, it houses a bakery and remains a symbol of Mentor’s rich cultural heritage.

💤 Sleepmaxxing Explained: The Internet Trend That Turns Rest into Ritual

The Internet’s Quest for Perfect Sleep - Sleepmaxxing
Sleepmaxxing is a rising social media trend focused on optimizing sleep through a mix of lifestyle changes, tech gadgets, and wellness products. Emerging in 2024 and popular among Gen Z and millennials, it blends traditional sleep hygiene with experimental techniques, all aimed at improving sleep quality and duration.
The term combines “sleep” with the suffix “-maxx,” borrowed from online self-improvement subcultures like looksmaxxing. While rooted in wellness, sleepmaxxing is often framed as a way to enhance appearance, cognitive function, and overall performance.
Common practices include creating a sleep-friendly environment using blackout curtains, white noise machines, and cooling devices. Tech like sleep trackers (e.g., Oura Ring, Apple Watch), sunrise alarm clocks, and smart mattress pads are also staples. Many aim for a cool room temperature (60–67°F) and avoid light and noise.
Supplements such as melatonin, magnesium, herbal teas, and branded “sleep drinks” are widely used. Some also turn to kiwifruit for its potential sleep-promoting properties. Caffeine, alcohol, and heavy meals before bedtime are typically avoided.
Routine changes include maintaining consistent sleep schedules, limiting screen time, and adopting calming pre-bed rituals like reading, meditation, or breathing exercises. Exposure to morning sunlight and regular physical activity are also encouraged.
More controversial elements include mouth taping, nasal strips, polyphasic sleep schedules, and sleeping on the back to preserve facial symmetry. Others explore spiritual practices like dream journaling, Solfège frequency apps, and pineal gland meditation—despite limited scientific support.
While some sleepmaxxing strategies align with established medical advice, others remain unproven or risky. Still, the trend reflects growing cultural interest in wellness, self-care, and mental health, as many seek better rest in an increasingly overstimulated world.

🏀 Lake Catholic Outlasts Elyria Catholic Behind Bohr’s Scoring Surge
In a thrilling clash on Tuesday night, Lake Catholic edged out Elyria Catholic with a hard-fought 70-66 victory. The Cougars leaned heavily on a dominant performance from Brody Bohr, who poured in an impressive 33 points to lead all scorers. Stanton Powaski provided strong support, contributing 16 points to help secure the win.
With this result, Lake Catholic improves its season record to 5-11. The Cougars will return to their home court on Friday, February 6, where they’ll face off against Padua Franciscan in another key matchup.
🏀 James Harden Traded to Cavaliers in Blockbuster Swap for Darius Garland
In a major midseason shake-up, the Los Angeles Clippers are trading James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for point guard Darius Garland and a future second-round pick, according to multiple sources. The move offers both teams a strategic pivot as they look to strengthen their rosters.
Harden, 36, leaves Los Angeles after joining the Clippers in 2023 from Philadelphia. He has remained a top offensive force, averaging 25.4 points and 8.1 assists this season. His impact helped turn around a poor team start, and he had signed a two-year, $81.5 million deal last summer, including a $42 million player option.
For the Cavaliers, who are 30-21, adding Harden brings a high-level scorer and playmaker to pair with Donovan Mitchell. The deal raises Cleveland’s championship hopes as the team pushes for a deep playoff run in the Eastern Conference.
Garland, 26, was a key piece in Cleveland’s rebuild after LeBron James’ departure and earned two All-Star nods. He’s averaging 18.0 points and 6.9 assists this season but hasn’t played since mid-January due to a toe injury. Last season, he posted career highs, including 20.6 points and 40% shooting from three.
Garland is under contract through 2027, with nearly $90 million remaining on his extension. Despite recent injuries, he brings long-term upside to the Clippers, who aim to remain competitive now while planning for the future.
This trade signals a strategic shift: Cleveland bets on veteran firepower, while Los Angeles banks on youth and flexibility.

🏀 Cleveland Overwhelms Portland as Both Teams Shuffle Rosters
On Sunday night, Jarrett Allen powered the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 130-111 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night, scoring a career-high 40 points, collecting 17 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks. He becomes the first player in NBA history to do that in less than 30 minutes.
Sam Merrill chipped in 22 points, hitting six three-pointers, while Caleb Love led the Blazers with 21. Portland played without leading scorer Deni Avdija, sidelined with a lower back strain.
The Blazers narrowed a 24-point deficit to 10 early in the fourth, but a Merrill three-pointer stretched Cleveland's lead to 118-104 with just over four minutes left, sealing the outcome.
Before tipoff, both teams made roster moves ahead of the trade deadline. Cleveland acquired guards Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroder in a three-team deal that sent De’Andre Hunter to Sacramento, while the Bulls received Dario Saric and picks. Portland traded for Vit Krejci from Atlanta in exchange for injured center Duop Reath and draft assets.
Avdija and Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell were both named All-Star reserves prior to the game.
Cleveland led 57-48 at halftime and pulled away further after Dean Wade hit consecutive threes in the third quarter. Blazers guard Blake Wesley made his season debut, returning from foot surgery. Up Next: The Cavaliers face the Los Angeles Clippers tonight.
