📰 Mentor’s Law Director Resigns, Aims to Step Down by Spring

Mentor Law Director Joseph P. Szeman has submitted his resignation but plans to remain in the position until a successor is appointed, according to city officials.

Szeman submitted his resignation in a letter dated Jan. 19, citing a combination of personal and professional factors behind his decision. While he did not provide specific details about the professional circumstances involved, city officials also declined to elaborate further.

In the letter, Szeman indicated he would prefer to leave the position as soon as possible but acknowledged that finding a replacement would take time. He chose not to set a firm departure date in order to give the city flexibility during the search process, noting that he hopes to transition out by the spring while continuing to assist in the interim.

Szeman has served as Mentor’s law director since November 2018. The position, which is appointed by Mentor City Council, involves serving as the city’s chief legal counsel, advising city officials and departments, representing the city in legal matters, and acting as the city’s prosecutor.

City officials have not announced a timeline for naming a replacement or indicated whether an interim law director will be appointed. During a recent City Council meeting, Szeman reflected positively on his time with the city and his work on behalf of the community.

📰 Emergency Crews Monitor Ice Jam Threat in Willoughby Hills

Emergency responders in Lake County are monitoring river conditions as fluctuating temperatures raise concerns about possible ice jams and flooding in Willoughby Hills.

Forecasts calling for continued cold followed by warmer weather have prompted officials to prepare for ice breaking loose and causing sudden rises in water levels. Willoughby Hills Fire Department crews say the changing conditions could lead to flooding and property damage near the river.

Ice jams are a recurring late-winter threat, and officials note that conditions can change rapidly with little warning. Residents living near the river are urged to stay alert, monitor weather patterns, and take steps to protect their property.

Officials estimate roughly 200 homes and nearby residents could be affected if an ice jam develops. Crews are watching ice buildup on the river and monitoring how conditions evolve.

Fire officials are also warning people to stay off frozen rivers, citing powerful currents and extreme danger if the ice gives way. Heavy moisture in the snowpack has increased flooding concerns, and moving ice could cause damage to homes and infrastructure.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for the Lake County Wireless Emergency Network to receive alerts as conditions change.

📰 Mentor Moves Hometown Heroes Display to Center Street for 2026

Mentor will continue honoring military service members through its Hometown Heroes banner program, with displays moving to Center Street this year.

Launched in 2017, the program recognizes current and former Mentor residents who have served or are serving in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, or Coast Guard. Previously displayed along Civic Center Drive, the banners were relocated to Center Street to improve visibility.

Registration for the 2026 banners opened Jan. 20. The program began after a resident suggested adopting a similar idea from another community, and city leaders quickly approved it. Mentor’s effort has since inspired other Ohio communities to create comparable tributes.

Banner space is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Each double-sided banner measures 30 by 60 inches and will hang from light poles along Center Street between Interstate 90 and Mentor Avenue from Memorial Day through Veterans Day.

After the display period, banners will be removed and returned to families or sponsors as keepsakes. The city is not responsible for replacing banners damaged or lost due to weather, vandalism, or age.

Sponsorships cost $100 per banner to cover production expenses. The deadline to participate is April 15 or until all positions are filled, and banners will be available for pickup after Nov. 15.

✈️ Home Prices Expected to Fall in 22 Major U.S. Cities in 2026

Buying a home has remained difficult as prices stay near record highs and mortgage rates remain above 6%, but conditions may ease in 2026. A new analysis from Realtor.com forecasts that home prices will decline in 22 of the 100 largest U.S. cities in 2026, pointing to a shift toward a more balanced housing market.

The report suggests the market will move away from the strong seller advantage seen during the pandemic, with negotiations expected to be more evenly matched. Mortgage rates are projected to average about 6.3% in 2026, slightly lower than in 2025, which could encourage more buyers to reenter the market alongside continued wage growth.

Lower prices in some cities and easing rates are also expected to support a gradual increase in home sales. Realtor.com projects existing-home sales will rise to about 4.13 million in 2026, a modest gain after several years of relatively flat activity. Zillow forecasts a similar trend, predicting sales could reach nearly 4.3 million as inventory expands and mortgage rates hover just above 6%.

Most cities expected to see price declines are in the Southeast and the West. Florida stands out, with seven of its eight largest cities projected to experience falling home values. Cape Coral and Fort Lauderdale are forecast to see the steepest drops, with prices falling by more than 10%, followed by the North Port–Sarasota–Bradenton area.

Analysts attribute the declines to rising inventory and cooling demand in markets that surged during the pandemic housing boom. Prices in the remaining 78 major cities are expected to rise modestly, with a median increase of about 4%.

🏈 Seahawks Ride Smothering Defense to Super Bowl LX Victory

When the Seattle Seahawks hired Mike Macdonald as head coach two years ago, they went against the NFL’s growing obsession with offensive-minded leaders. Instead, Seattle trusted a coach known for defensive excellence, a decision that delivered a championship payoff in Super Bowl LX.

Macdonald guided the Seahawks to a 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium, securing the second Super Bowl title in franchise history. The win mirrored Seattle’s first championship run, built on a dominant, suffocating defense that controlled the game from start to finish.

The Seahawks held New England scoreless through three quarters, building a 12-0 lead before finally reaching the end zone early in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to A.J. Barner. The score pushed the lead to 19-0 and effectively sealed the outcome.

Seattle’s defense overwhelmed Patriots quarterback Drake Maye with constant pressure, limiting New England to 331 total yards, many of which came late with the game already decided. The Patriots struggled to sustain drives, at one point going nearly an entire half of game time between first downs.

While the offense did enough to capitalize on opportunities, the night belonged to Seattle’s defense. Once again, the Seahawks proved that elite defense remains a winning formula on the NFL’s biggest stage.
