🏠 Mentor Resident Urges Council to Revisit Short-Term Rental Ban After Apartment Fire
A Mentor resident is calling on City Council to reconsider the city’s prohibition on short-term rentals, suggesting the policy may have limited temporary housing options for families displaced by the Jan. 31 fire at Park House Apartments.
During public comment at the Feb. 17 council meeting, the resident pointed to the apartment blaze that forced dozens of people from their homes in the middle of winter. While expressing appreciation for the city’s intentions when it enacted the ban, the speaker argued that a complete prohibition can create challenges during emergencies, when displaced residents need flexible, short-term housing solutions.
The Jan. 31 fire at Park House Apartments prompted a swift response from emergency crews and led to an outpouring of community support. Mentor Schools organized donation drives, the American Red Cross provided assistance, and the city outlined shelter options and discounted hotel arrangements for those affected. No serious injuries were reported, but many residents faced uncertainty as they searched for temporary places to stay.
Council voted 4–3 in November to reject a proposal that would have allowed a limited number of short-term rentals through platforms such as Airbnb and Vrbo. The proposal included strict regulations, including a cap of 32 properties citywide — no more than eight per ward — along with annual permits, inspections, occupancy limits and requirements for local property management oversight.
At the time, city officials cited concerns about preserving neighborhood character, ensuring safety and addressing enforcement challenges as reasons for maintaining the ban.
The Feb. 17 speaker suggested council explore regulated alternatives rather than a full prohibition, noting that controlled short-term rental options could provide critical housing flexibility in situations where residents are unexpectedly displaced. City officials have not indicated whether the issue will return to council for reconsideration.

The program is free and open to the public. It will also be recorded and streamed live on the library’s YouTube channel for those unable to attend in person.
📅 Mentor Council Cancels March 3 Meeting; Zoning Variance Hearing Scheduled
City Council Cancels March 3 Meeting; Zoning Board Hearing Set for March 10
The Mentor City Council has canceled its regularly scheduled meeting for March 3, 2026, citing a lack of legislative items for discussion. The next regular council meeting will be held March 17, 2026.
In other city business, the Mentor Municipal Board of Building and Zoning Appeals will conduct a public hearing at 7:00 p.m. on March 10, 2026, in Council Chambers at the Mentor Civic Center, 8500 Civic Center Blvd.
James and Rebecca Gephart are requesting a variance for their property at 9545 Curberry Drive. The proposal seeks approval to build a home addition with an 11-foot side setback, rather than the 15-foot minimum required in the city’s R-4 Single-Family Residential District. The board will review the request and determine whether it meets local zoning standards.

💊 Librela Remains in Use Despite Reports of Seizures and Other Complications

Veterinarians nationwide are continuing to prescribe Librela for dogs with osteoarthritis, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recommended stopping its use. While the agency has alerted veterinary professionals to reports of serious side effects, it maintains that the drug remains safe and effective when used as approved.
Librela, or bedinvetmab, is a monthly injectable monoclonal antibody therapy approved in May 2023 to manage pain associated with canine osteoarthritis. It was the first treatment of its kind for dogs and is dosed according to a dog’s weight.
From May 2023 through March 2024, the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine reviewed adverse event reports tied to the medication. Reported complications included loss of muscle control, decreased appetite, lethargy, seizures, partial paralysis, difficulty standing, urinary incontinence, excessive urination, and increased thirst. Some cases resulted in death, including euthanasia.
Despite these reports, regulators have not called for the drug’s withdrawal. Instead, the FDA is advising veterinarians to carefully assess dogs for other possible medical conditions before prescribing Librela, since it is approved solely for osteoarthritis pain management.
Zoetis, the manufacturer, is continuing to monitor and evaluate incoming safety reports. Pet owners are encouraged to watch for unusual symptoms following injections and consult their veterinarian with any concerns. Veterinarians can report suspected adverse reactions to Zoetis or directly to the FDA.

🏀 Cleveland Falls Just Short After Review Erases Buzzer-Beater
The Cleveland Cavaliers were a fraction of a second away from overtime Wednesday night but fell 118-116 to the Milwaukee Bucks after a last-second putback was overturned on review.
Jarrett Allen appeared to tie the game at the buzzer, but officials ruled the shot came after time expired. Allen led Cleveland with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
Playing without James Harden, Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley, the short-handed Cavaliers still battled late. Dennis Schroder scored 26 points and helped knot the score at 116 with just over 35 seconds remaining. After a defensive stop, Kevin Porter Jr. answered with a go-ahead jumper with 20.2 seconds left.
Porter finished with 20 points as Milwaukee won its fifth in six games. The loss drops Cleveland to fourth in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers visit Detroit on Friday night.
