🗽 Mentor Honors Revolutionary Roots in America’s 250th Celebration

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, Mentor is honoring its Revolutionary-era roots and significant presidential history.
Although Ohio became a state in 1803, the area that became Mentor was settled shortly after the Revolution. Following the Treaty of Paris, the Ohio Territory became part of the United States. In 1796, Moses Cleaveland’s team surveyed the Connecticut Western Reserve, and in 1797 surveyor Charles Parker settled near today’s Lakeshore Boulevard and Hopkins Road. Other pioneers followed, including several Revolutionary War veterans.
As part of the America250 celebration, the city identified seven veterans who lived in or are buried in Mentor: Benjamin Blish, Garritt Brass, Roger Craine, Israel Fox, John Reynolds, Jacob Tyler, and Ebenezer Wilson. Each will be honored with a commemorative day and featured in the Hometown Heroes banner program.
Mentor will also mark the 150th anniversary of President James A. Garfield’s 1876 purchase of the Dickey farm, later known as Lawnfield. His 1880 front porch campaign drew more than 17,000 visitors. A new bronze statue by noted sculptor Alan Cottrill will be dedicated at the Civic Center on July 3, 2026.
An expanded Independence Day celebration will feature live music by Hotel California and a 25-minute fireworks finale.

🚨 Quick Response Leads to Safe Return of Young Child in Mentor-on-the-Lake
Missing 4-Year-Old Safely Reunited with Family in Mentor-on-the-Lake
A 4-year-old boy was safely reunited with his family Friday afternoon after being found wandering alone in the roadway in Mentor-on-the-Lake.
At approximately 1:55 p.m., officers responded to a report of a young child walking in the middle of the street in the 7700 block of Primrose Drive. A resident spotted the boy barefoot, wearing only a long-sleeve shirt and a soiled diaper, and immediately contacted police.
Officers arrived quickly and took the child into protective custody. During their interaction, they observed signs indicating the boy was non-verbal and possibly on the autism spectrum.
About 30 minutes later, the child’s father contacted the department to report his son missing. Officers coordinated with the family, and the child was safely returned home.
Police emphasized that incidents involving missing children — particularly those with special needs — can escalate rapidly. The department maintains a Special Needs Registry to help first responders identify and safely assist individuals who may have difficulty communicating.
The registry is available at www.mentoronthelake.gov, and forms can be submitted online, dropped off at the police department, or emailed to Lt. Tina Messinger.

🍓 3 No-Bake Desserts You Won’t Be Able to Stop Eating

No Heat, All Sweet: 3 No-Bake Desserts You’ll Love
When you don’t feel like turning on the oven, no-bake desserts are the perfect solution. They’re quick, easy, and guaranteed crowd-pleasers. Here are three simple treats that never disappoint.
First up: No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars. Think homemade peanut butter cups — rich, creamy, and topped with smooth chocolate. With just a few pantry ingredients and about 15 minutes of prep, they chill in the fridge and slice into irresistible squares. Perfect for parties, cookouts, or an easy after-dinner treat.
Next, try No-Bake Strawberry Cheesecake Cups. These layered desserts combine graham cracker crumbs, creamy cheesecake filling, and fresh strawberries in individual servings. They look impressive but are surprisingly simple to assemble — and no springform pan is needed. Light, refreshing, and ideal for warm-weather gatherings.
Finally, there’s Classic No-Bake Oatmeal Cookies. Chocolatey, peanut-buttery, and chewy, these nostalgic favorites come together quickly and set up on parchment paper. They’re simple, satisfying, and disappear fast — you may want to make extra.
Three desserts. Zero oven. Big flavor.

🏀 Mentor Rebounds in Sectional Final, Rolls Past Lorain 83-59
After dropping four of its final five regular-season games, Mentor regained momentum with an 83-59 win over Lorain in a Division I sectional final Feb. 27.
The Cardinals applied suffocating full-court pressure, forcing 25 turnovers and building a 65-30 halftime lead. With control established, Mentor played reserves throughout the second half as 14 players reached the scoring column.
Sophomore Connor Witte scored 14 points, including 10 in a pivotal second quarter sparked by crisp passing and transition baskets. Logan Lynch added 12 points, and senior Tony Katava finished with 11.
Mentor (15-8), the No. 7 seed in Northeast Ohio Division I, advances to host No. 15 Toledo Whitmer in a March 3 district semifinal. Whitmer knocked Mentor out of the postseason last year but graduated much of that squad.
Lorain (2-21), featuring no seniors, was led by Jeremiah Daniels with 15 points. Javell Morris added 11, and freshman Mark Cheers contributed 10 in a rebuilding campaign.
🏀 Pistons Edge Cavs After 18-Minute Horn Delay Sparks Chaotic Night
The Cleveland Cavaliers battled through a tough, physical contest Friday night but came up short in a 122-119 overtime loss to the Detroit Pistons in a game filled with unusual interruptions.
An 18-minute delay in the third quarter halted momentum when a power surge caused the overhead scoreboard to malfunction, leaving the arena horn blaring continuously. Officials eventually shut down the board and resumed play using a manual airhorn.
Tempers flared throughout the night in the bruising matchup, and two fans were ejected on separate occasions as tensions spilled beyond the court.
Despite playing without James Harden and Donovan Mitchell for a second straight game, Cleveland showed resilience. The Cavaliers led by nine points with less than three minutes remaining in regulation and appeared in control late before Detroit rallied to force overtime. A late three-pointer by Evan Mobley at the buzzer in overtime narrowly missed.
Jarrett Allen led Cleveland with 25 points, while Mobley added 23 points and 12 rebounds. Sam Merrill chipped in 20 points as the Cavaliers battled to the final possession in a hard-fought road defeat.
