📰 Mentor-on-the-Lake Encourages Special Needs Registration

Mentor-on-the-Lake officials are urging families to enroll in the city’s Special Needs Registry following a recent incident involving a missing 4-year-old child.

As previously reported, Police responded Friday afternoon to a report of a young boy walking alone in the street on Primrose Drive. Officers quickly located the child, who appeared to be non-verbal and possibly on the autism spectrum, and safely took him into custody. About 30 minutes later, his father contacted police to report him missing, and the child was reunited with his family unharmed.

While the situation ended safely, authorities say it underscores how quickly cases involving children with special needs can escalate.

The department’s Special Needs Registry is designed to help first responders identify and assist individuals who may have difficulty communicating or responding during emergencies. Families can provide important details such as medical needs, behavioral considerations and calming techniques, allowing officers to respond more effectively.

Similar special needs registries — or variations of the program — are used by several cities and townships across Ohio as a proactive safety tool for first responders.

Officials noted that enrollment could allow for even faster identification and reunification in situations like this. Registration forms are available online or at the police department and should be updated annually. Completed forms may also be emailed to Lt. Tina Messinger at [email protected].

Police and fire officials say the registry is a simple but critical step families can take to enhance safety for their loved ones.

🚧 Lakeshore Boulevard Bridge Repairs Set to Begin This Week

Drivers in the area should prepare for traffic changes as repairs begin on the State Route 283 (Lakeshore Boulevard) bridge this week.

The Ohio Department of Transportation announced that work on the bridge deck is scheduled to start the first week of March 2026. The project will require lane closures on both SR-283 and SR-44 while crews complete the repairs.

Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout construction, though motorists may experience delays. Officials say additional updates will be shared as more details about the project timeline and traffic impacts become available.

🕰️ Lawnfield Welcomes Visitors Back Following 53-Day Closure

The James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor reopened Feb. 28 after a 53-day renovation that included replacing 3,100 square feet of flooring and restoring interior woodwork. Funded by a $374,277 federal grant, the upgrades prepare the site for increased visitation during the nation’s 250th anniversary year. Nearly 40,000 visitors toured the site in 2024, contributing $1.7 million locally, as renewed interest in Garfield grows statewide and nationally.

🏡 Mortgage Rates Hold Near Three-Year Lows as Markets Signal Stability

Mortgage rates were largely unchanged Friday, remaining near their lowest levels in more than three years and providing stability for late-winter homebuyers and homeowners considering refinancing.

The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate held at 6.041%, while the 15-year fixed rate remained at 5.457%. The 20-year fixed rose slightly to 5.82%, and the 10-year fixed edged up to 5.421%. Government-backed loans increased modestly, with FHA loans averaging 5.995% and VA loans at 6.089%. The 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgage averaged 5.465%.

These rates are among the most favorable seen since September 2022, putting more borrowers in a position to refinance or access home equity. Buyers are also benefiting from improved affordability compared to recent highs.

Market trends are helping support rate stability. The 10-year Treasury yield fell to 3.982%, a three-month low, which typically benefits mortgage pricing. Stock markets declined, encouraging investment in bonds and helping keep rates contained. Oil prices rose modestly, while gold climbed near historic highs, reflecting investor caution. The CNN Fear & Greed Index slipped further into “Fear” territory, another signal supporting bond demand.

With no Federal Reserve meeting scheduled until mid-March, rates are expected to remain steady in the near term. Upcoming employment data could influence future movement, particularly if strong job growth reduces expectations for rate cuts.

Freddie Mac’s latest survey placed the 30-year average at 5.98%, the lowest level since September 2022. Major housing forecasters expect rates to hover around 6% throughout 2026, though economic uncertainty remains.

For now, mortgage rates appear stable, offering a continued window of opportunity for buyers and refinancers.

🏀 Harden Shines Through Injury as Cavs Rally Past Nets

James Harden made an immediate impact in his return from a broken thumb, scoring 22 points to lift the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 106-102 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday in New York. The win snapped Cleveland’s two-game skid and continued its recent success against Brooklyn.

Harden, who had missed two games with a non-displaced thumb fracture, shot efficiently while adding nine rebounds and eight assists. Since joining the Cavaliers in early February, the veteran guard has provided stability to the lineup.

Jarrett Allen contributed 20 points and Evan Mobley added 16 points and 13 rebounds. Sam Merrill scored 15, and Dennis Schroder finished with 10 points, hitting crucial free throws in the final seconds.

Brooklyn built a 56-42 halftime lead behind strong shooting and was paced by Michael Porter Jr.’s 26 points. Danny Wolf added 23 points and nine rebounds as the Nets briefly threatened late after Cleveland erased the deficit and took control in the fourth quarter.

The Nets trimmed the lead to a point in the closing seconds, but steady free-throw shooting from Schroder and Mobley sealed the win. The loss was Brooklyn’s eighth straight, dropping the team to 15-45.

Cleveland played without Donovan Mitchell for a third straight game due to a groin injury and Dean Wade because of a sprained ankle. The Cavaliers host Detroit on Tuesday.
