💖 Families and Officials Cheer on Broadmoor Bobcats in Mentor Game

The Broadmoor School Bobcats took the court in Mentor for a basketball game that brought together students, families, and local officials for a day of friendly competition.

The event highlighted the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Broadmoor Bobcats Adaptive Basketball Team. The program includes students with developmental disabilities, such as autism and cerebral palsy, who participate in adapted physical education designed to give them the same opportunities to learn and compete as their peers.

The stands were filled with family members and supporters cheering on the team, including Clare and Ronald Montz, who attended to watch their grandson, Mason. The game marked the Bobcats’ final home matchup of the season.

Community leaders also joined the crowd to support the students and celebrate the inclusive program.

The Bobcats secured an 86–32 victory, maintaining their undefeated record. The team will next host its annual Bobcats and Coaches game on March 16 at Lake Catholic High School.

🏫 Bishop Encourages Faith and Purpose During Visit to Lake Catholic

Bishop Edward Malesic of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese recently visited Lake Catholic High School in Mentor, where he joined the school community for a special all-school Mass.

Students, faculty, and staff gathered to welcome the bishop during the visit, which centered on faith, encouragement, and reflection. During the Mass, Bishop Malesic shared a message urging students to have confidence in their path and to trust that their lives hold purpose. He emphasized that life’s challenges can ultimately lead to growth and meaningful outcomes.

The bishop encouraged students to remember that they are part of a larger plan and that perseverance and faith can guide them through uncertain moments.

Following the Mass, Bishop Malesic spent additional time with the school community by joining students for lunch. The meal included desserts prepared by students in Lake Catholic’s culinary classes, offering a chance for informal conversation and connection with the visiting bishop.

🏡 Developers Turn to Build-to-Rent Homes as Demand Grows

A growing shift in the U.S. housing market is beginning to take hold in Ohio as developers expand build-to-rent (BTR) communities—neighborhoods of newly constructed single-family homes designed specifically for renters rather than buyers.

Traditionally, most new single-family homes have been built for sale. However, recent data shows that about 7% of newly constructed single-family houses are now intended as rentals, reflecting a noticeable change in how developers approach housing demand.

These purpose-built rental communities often look similar to traditional suburban neighborhoods, with standalone homes, garages, yards, and shared amenities. The difference is that the homes are professionally managed and leased to residents rather than sold to individual homeowners.

Developers say the concept is gaining popularity with young professionals, families, and older adults who want the space and privacy of a house but prefer to avoid the financial commitment and maintenance responsibilities that come with homeownership. Renting a single-family home can provide flexibility while still offering features that apartments typically lack, such as larger living areas and private outdoor space.

Ohio has become an attractive location for these projects because of its steady population centers, relatively affordable land, and continued housing demand. Communities in and around growing metro areas are starting to see more developments that blend suburban-style homes with long-term rental options.

Housing economists note that the expansion of build-to-rent housing could also influence the broader market. Increasing the number of available homes—whether they are rented or sold—can help ease housing shortages and potentially stabilize rising home prices.

As housing affordability continues to challenge many buyers, build-to-rent neighborhoods may become an increasingly common feature of the housing landscape in Ohio and across the country. The model offers another path to suburban living at a time when flexibility and affordability remain top priorities for many households.

Cardinals Place Two on Podium, Finish 8th at State Tournament

The Mentor High School Cardinals wrestling team wrapped up a hard-fought weekend at the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in Perrysburg, Ohio with two athletes earning podium finishes and the team placing eighth overall in the state.

Senior Corbin Bissett battled through a tough bracket to secure 5th place, earning the designation of state alternate in his weight class. Bissett’s strong performance helped lead Mentor’s scoring effort during the tournament.

Freshman J.J. Hoynes also reached the podium, finishing 6th place after an impressive run through the championship bracket. Competing on one of Ohio’s biggest high school wrestling stages, Hoynes showed poise and determination against some of the top competitors in the state.

The Cardinals entered the tournament with high hopes and faced a challenging field of Division I programs from across Ohio. Despite the ups and downs that come with state-level competition, Mentor finished the weekend with a top-10 team finish, highlighting the strength and depth of the program.

With key contributors returning next season and younger wrestlers gaining valuable state experience, the Cardinals look poised to build on this year’s success.
