📰 From State Titles to Sidelines: Remembering Coach John Gibbons

John Gibbons, a highly respected figure in Ohio high school football and a key part of Lake Catholic’s legacy, died April 4 surrounded by family. His career spanned decades and left a lasting mark on players, programs, and the broader football community.

Gibbons led Lake Catholic to Division III state championships in 1991 and 1992, along with eight conference titles. The 1991 team made history by delivering Lake County’s first football state championship under Ohio’s playoff system. He remained head coach through 1999 before continuing his career at St. Edward, where he guided the Eagles to seven straight playoff appearances and a Division I state runner-up finish in 2003. After additional time at Bedford, he returned to Lake Catholic as an assistant and stayed involved through the most recent season despite health challenges.

His influence extended beyond wins and losses. Known for his energy and commitment, Gibbons helped build a culture of discipline and tradition that shaped generations of athletes.

Football was central to the Gibbons family. He and his wife Patty raised ten children, several of whom became coaches, including sons Marty and Mike. He is also survived by more than two dozen grandchildren.

Gibbons was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2015, recognizing a career defined by success, leadership, and lasting impact.

📰 Open Seat on Mentor Public Library Board Now Accepting Applications

The Mentor School Board is accepting applications to fill a vacant seat on the Mentor Public Library Board following a recent resignation.

The appointed trustee will serve the remainder of the term through Dec. 31 and will begin duties immediately upon selection. In Ohio, school boards appoint members to public library boards within their districts.

Applicants must submit a letter of interest detailing their residence, length of time at their current address, reason for applying, community involvement, and service experience, along with up to three references.

The application deadline is April 17, with interviews scheduled for the week of April 27. A committee of school district and library representatives will review applications and recommend a candidate, with a final appointment expected at the board’s May meeting.

Applications should be sent to the Mentor Board of Education, addressed to Bill Wade at 6451 Center St., Mentor. Additional information is available through the district’s Chief Financial Officer’s office.

3. Aviation Mega-Museum (Dayton, OH)
