📰 How the Christ Child Society Has Grown Since Its 1983 Lake County Founding

The Christ Child Society of Western Reserve is expanding its programs to meet the evolving needs of families across Lake County, marking a new phase for an organization rooted in service since 1983. What began as a small effort by local women has grown into a broad network supporting children and families facing hardship.

Over the past four decades, the organization has adapted to changing economic conditions while maintaining its focus on providing essential resources. This latest expansion strengthens programs aimed at delivering direct support to children in need.

Driven by volunteers and donors, the Christ Child Society continues to reflect strong community involvement and growing demand for its services.

For Lake County residents, the expansion offers a stronger support system. Active throughout Mentor and nearby communities, the organization remains committed to its founding mission of neighbors helping neighbors.

The Christ Child Society, founded in 1887 in Washington, D.C. by Mary Virginia Merrick is a national non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children in need. For over 130 years, the 6,000 members in nearly 50 chapters across 20 states have been driven by faith, love, and a desire to change the future for these deserving children.

📰 Mentor High Grad Lisa Klammer Named Interim Law Director

Mentor City Council has appointed Lisa Klammer as the city’s interim law director, bringing a local alumna back to a primary leadership role within the municipal government. Announced on April 5, the transition places Klammer at the head of Mentor’s legal department to manage the city’s statutory obligations and provide counsel to local officials.

Klammer’s ties to the community are lifelong. She is a graduate of Mentor High School and continued her education at Miami University of Ohio. She earned her Juris Doctor from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, establishing a professional foundation in Northeast Ohio. Her appointment ensures that the city’s legal operations remain steady during this transitional period.

The role of the law director is critical for city operations, overseeing everything from contract reviews to legislative drafting and legal defense. Having an interim director with deep local roots provides a sense of continuity for residents and city staff alike. Klammer will oversee all departmental responsibilities while the city determines its next steps for a permanent appointment. Residents can expect the law department to maintain its current schedule of services and advisory roles for the Mentor City Council and administration. This appointment marks a significant return for a local graduate to serve her home community in a high-level capacity.

⚾ 94-Year-Old Superfan Honored on Guardians Opening Day

Nancy Sherwin took center stage once again at Progressive Field on Friday during the Cleveland Guardians’ opening day celebration, marking a special moment in her decades-long connection to the team.

At 94 years old, Sherwin presented the ceremonial game ball to the umpire, honoring her remarkable 50 years as a season ticket holder. Her lifelong love of baseball began with her father and continued when she moved to Cleveland for graduate school, where she attended her first game on a bright afternoon that sparked a lasting tradition.

Over the years, Sherwin became known for carefully scoring every game she attends, now filling her sixth scorebook. Her detailed records have even helped fellow fans keep up with the action during games.

Her dedication to the sport has brought her memorable moments, including throwing out a ceremonial first pitch on her 90th birthday after practicing to make sure she delivered it just right.

For this year’s opening day ceremony, Sherwin made her way to the mound with assistance, supported by determination and enthusiasm. The occasion was made even more meaningful as all four of her children traveled to Cleveland to celebrate alongside her and the city she has long called home.

📊 Mortgage Rates Climb to 6.46% as April Outlook Signals Continued Volatility

Mortgage rates have continued rising for five straight weeks, reaching their highest level since September 2025. As of April 2, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate increased to 6.46%, up from 6.38% a week earlier.

This increase comes as the spring homebuying season begins. While higher rates pose challenges, a growing supply of homes in many markets is helping ease pressure for buyers.

Borrowing activity has slowed, with mortgage applications dropping notably and refinancing seeing the steepest decline. However, refinancing remains higher than a year ago, and government-backed loans continue to perform better than conventional ones.

Experts generally agree that mortgage rates are unlikely to shift dramatically in April. Instead, they are expected to fluctuate within a narrow range, staying in the low-to-mid 6% range. Economic uncertainty, inflation concerns, and geopolitical tensions—especially those affecting energy prices—are driving this volatility.

Although there are signs of a cooling labor market and easing inflation, global instability and policy uncertainty are offsetting those trends. As a result, rates are expected to remain unpredictable in the near term.

Longer-term projections point to a gradual decline through 2026, with second-quarter averages forecast between about 5.9% and 6.3%. Significant drops, however, will likely require clearer economic improvement.

Despite current conditions, rates remain below historical averages, offering some reassurance to buyers. Still, experts stress the importance of preparation and comparing multiple lenders, as rate differences can significantly impact overall costs.

⚾ Captains Claim First Win of 2026 Season, Defeat Whitecaps 6-3

The Lake County Captains earned their first win of the 2026 season Sunday, defeating the West Michigan Whitecaps 6-3 at Classic Auto Group Park. After dropping the first two games of the series, Lake County avoided a sweep and ended the weekend on a positive note.

Entering the game winless, the Captains found their rhythm at the plate and delivered a composed performance on both offense and defense. The three-run margin reflected timely hitting and steady pitching throughout the game.

The victory provides early momentum as the team continues Midwest League play. For Eastlake fans, it offers an encouraging sign as the Captains look to build consistency over the long season.

Now 1-2, Lake County sits just below .500 and will aim to carry this progress into its next series. As Cleveland Guardians prospects develop at the High-A level, the team is expected to continue refining its lineup in the weeks ahead.

⚾ Doubleheader Drama: Cubs Dominate Early, Guardians Surge Late

An unusual Easter doubleheader in Cleveland ended in a split as the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Guardians each claimed a win at Progressive Field.

The opener was a cold, wind-swept pitcher’s duel, with Chicago securing a 1-0 victory despite managing only two hits. The game’s lone run came in the eighth inning on Miguel Amaya’s RBI single to right-center, scoring a pinch-runner from second. Cubs pitchers combined to allow just one hit, shutting down Cleveland’s offense throughout.

The three total hits marked the fewest in a game at Progressive Field. Cleveland’s only hit came on a deep sixth-inning double, but the Guardians could not turn it into a run.

Game 2 brought a surge of offense, as Cleveland rallied for a 6-5 win. Trailing late, the Guardians tied the game on a home run by CJ Kayfus before stringing together key hits. Gabriel Arias delivered the go-ahead RBI, and Cleveland added insurance before holding off a ninth-inning push from Chicago.

The split capped a day that featured both historic pitching and a late-game comeback, along with a milestone moment as Cleveland’s longtime star matched the franchise record for games played.

🏀 Cavaliers Rally Late Behind Mitchell to Defeat Short-Handed Pacers

Donovan Mitchell scored 38 points, including 23 in the second half, to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 117-108 win over the Indiana Pacers on Sunday night. Cleveland, already playoff-bound, used a strong late push to secure the victory.

James Harden added 28 points and seven assists, while Thomas Bryant contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds in his first start of the season. Despite missing key frontcourt players, the Cavaliers found their footing after halftime and took control in the fourth quarter.

Cleveland didn’t lead until the third period, but a go-ahead three-pointer early in the fourth sparked a run that pushed the margin into double digits. The team improved to 49-29 and moved closer to locking up home-court advantage in the first round.

Indiana, dealing with multiple injuries and a shortened rotation, stayed competitive early and held a narrow halftime lead. However, the Pacers couldn’t keep pace down the stretch and dropped to 18-60 on the season.
