📰 City Council Recognizes Civilians in Cold-Weather Rescue

Mentor Police Chief, Ken Gunsch and Daniel Sutherland

After a brief mention in the April 9 newsletter, we’re taking a closer look at the events recognized during the April 7 Mentor City Council meeting, where two local men were honored by city council and Mentor Police Chief Ken Gunsch, for helping rescue two young children in dangerously cold conditions.

Daniel Osborne and Daniel Sutherland were recognized for their actions during a late-January incident at an Extended Stay America hotel.

In the early morning hours of Jan. 29, police responded to reports of a young child alone in the parking lot. Sutherland, staying on the third floor, heard crying and went to investigate. He found a 3-year-old girl outside in the snow, lightly dressed and showing signs of cold exposure, then brought her inside, called police, and gave her clothing.

After officers arrived, Sutherland helped locate the child’s mother. Police then learned an 8-year-old girl with autism was also missing.

As officers searched, they encountered Osborne, who immediately joined in and helped locate the second child near a nearby movie theater. She was wearing only a T-shirt and shoes and also showed signs of exposure.

Temperatures were 8 degrees with a wind chill below zero and steady snowfall. Osborne helped get the child to a patrol car and kept her calm until responders arrived.

Medical personnel later confirmed neither child suffered lasting injuries. Officials credited the men’s quick actions with preventing a far worse outcome.

🌎 Minor Earthquake Shakes Lake County Late Wednesday Night

Did you feel it? A minor earthquake was recorded in Lake County late Wednesday night, marking the second seismic event in the area within a month.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 2.1 magnitude quake occurred around 11:17 p.m., with its epicenter located southeast of Madison. While relatively small, the tremor may have been noticeable to some residents nearby.

Northeast Ohio sits within a seismic zone known for moderately frequent, low-magnitude earthquakes. Events of this size rarely cause damage but can occasionally be felt, especially during quiet nighttime hours.

Residents who experienced the tremor are encouraged to submit a “Felt Report” to the USGS to help track how widely the quake was noticed.

Historically, the strongest earthquake recorded in the region was a magnitude 4.8 event in 1986.

🛣️ Skip the Crowds: 3 Hidden Ohio Getaways Worth the Drive

Looking for a fresh weekend escape without the heavy crowds? These underrated Ohio destinations are perfect for Mentor-area residents who want something scenic, relaxing, and just a little different this spring or summer.

Start with Zoar Village, a quiet historic town that feels like stepping back in time. Founded in the early 1800s by German settlers, Zoar offers preserved buildings, peaceful gardens, and canal-side walking paths. It’s especially beautiful in the spring when everything is in bloom, making it ideal for a low-key afternoon of exploring and unwinding.

If you’re craving lake views without the party atmosphere, head to Kelleys Island. While many flock elsewhere, this island offers a more laid-back vibe with scenic bike rides, rocky shorelines, and the fascinating Glacial Grooves State Memorial—massive formations carved by glaciers thousands of years ago. It’s a unique mix of nature and tranquility just a ferry ride away.

For those who love hiking and nature, Glen Helen Nature Preserve is a hidden gem worth the drive. Located near the artsy village of Yellow Springs, this preserve features wooded trails, small waterfalls, and peaceful footbridges. After your hike, the nearby downtown offers local shops, coffee spots, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe.

Each of these destinations is within a reasonable drive from Mentor and offers a completely different experience—whether you’re into history, lake life, or nature. Best of all, they let you enjoy Ohio’s beauty without the usual crowds.

⚾ Cougars Strike in Sixth to Secure 5-4 Comeback Victory

Lake Catholic pushed its winning streak to five games with a 5-4 comeback victory over South on April 11, using a decisive sixth-inning rally to secure the win.

South opened the scoring in the first inning, but the Cougars responded in the second to take a 2-1 lead by capitalizing on baserunners and defensive pressure. The game remained tight through the middle innings before South surged ahead 4-2 in the top of the sixth.

Lake Catholic answered immediately. A combination of timely hits and a defensive miscue allowed the Cougars to even the score before a clutch two-out single drove in the go-ahead run. The pitching staff held on from there, with Tyler Hribar closing out the final inning to seal the victory.

Lake Catholic totaled eight hits and drew five walks, continuing to show patience and depth at the plate. South remained competitive throughout but dropped another narrow decision.

🥎 Lady Cardinals Split Doubleheader, Turn Focus to Perrysburg

The Mentor Lady Cardinals split a pair of home games Saturday, showcasing both offensive firepower and late-game struggles across the doubleheader.

In the opener against the Green Bulldogs, Mentor surged ahead early and built a comfortable lead before holding off a late push from Green to secure the win. Allie Dugach earned the victory in the circle after starting the game, while Syd Cahill provided relief to help close things out. The Cardinals’ offense produced 11 hits and eight runs, with several players contributing multi-hit performances to fuel the early advantage.

Game two followed a similar early script, as Mentor again jumped out in front—this time against St. Vincent-St. Mary. Savannah Nero recorded three hits, including a triple, while Peyton Willis and Allie Dugach each added two hits—both collecting doubles.

However, the momentum shifted late. Defensive miscues proved costly, as the Cardinals committed five errors, opening the door for a comeback. St. Vincent-St. Mary capitalized by scoring four runs over the final two innings to claim a 6-4 victory. Despite the final score, Mentor’s pitching staff allowed only two earned runs, underscoring the impact of the defensive lapses.

Mentor now turns its attention to another road doubleheader, traveling to face the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets. The first game is scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by a second matchup at noon.

⚾ Messick Dominates, Ramírez Homers as Guardians Blank Braves

Rookie left-hander Parker Messick pitched into the seventh inning and continued his dominant start to the season as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-0 Saturday night.

José Ramírez sparked the offense with a first-inning home run and finished with two hits, two stolen bases, and a walk.

Messick allowed just four hits while striking out five, maintaining a stellar early-season ERA. The bullpen closed out the team’s first shutout of the year.

Cleveland added runs throughout the game, including contributions from Rhys Hoskins, Chase DeLauter, and Daniel Schneemann, who drove in two off the bench.
