Cardiologists: Try This Sugar Trick For Looser Pants Fast

For many people over 40, weight gain does not start because they suddenly eat more. It often begins when the body handles sugar differently after meals.

Cardiologists say repeated blood sugar spikes and crashes can push the body to store more energy as belly fat, even when daily habits stay mostly the same.

Read the report on the sugar pattern researchers are studying.

🥕 Mentor Seniors: Apply for $50 in Fresh Produce Starting April 22

A statewide program could help bring fresh, locally grown food to seniors right here in Mentor.

The Ohio Department of Aging is bringing back the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, offering eligible older adults $50 to spend on fresh, locally grown foods. Benefits can be used for fruits, vegetables, herbs and unprocessed honey at participating markets.

Enrollment opens April 22 at noon and runs through May 22, with applications available online. Residents in Mentor and across Lake County will have access to nearby farmers markets and seasonal stands, making it easier to find fresh, nutritious options while supporting local growers.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 60 years old and meet income limits at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level. Participants can choose digital benefits for quicker access or request a physical card, which may take several weeks to arrive.

Benefits are expected to begin May 15, aligning with the start of the growing season. The program aims to improve nutrition for seniors while supporting local agriculture.

🏡 Mentor Seeks Federal Funds to Help Homeowners with Major Repairs

A recent public notice from the City of Mentor might read like legal fine print—but it points to a program that could directly help residents stay in their homes.

The city is preparing to request federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support a Single-Family Housing Rehabilitation Program. If approved, this funding would help low- to moderate-income homeowners in Mentor pay for critical home repairs.

We’re not talking about cosmetic upgrades. This program focuses on essential fixes like roof replacement, foundation repairs, plumbing issues, and drainage systems—the kinds of problems that can quickly become expensive and, if ignored, lead to bigger structural damage.

The initial funding is expected to cover 4 to 7 homes, with up to $60,000 allocated depending on project costs. While that’s a small number, programs like this often serve as a starting point for future funding rounds.

Even if you don’t qualify, there’s a broader community impact. Maintaining homes helps protect property values, reduce neighborhood deterioration, and improve safety—especially in areas with older housing stock.

There’s also a short window for public input. Residents can submit comments through April 27 before the city officially requests the funds.

Bottom line: This is one of those quiet initiatives that doesn’t grab headlines—but for the homeowners it reaches, it can mean staying safe, dry, and financially stable. More information to follow in the coming days.

🛣️ Mentor, Mentor-on-the-Lake Team Up Again to Cut Road Repair Costs

As mentioned in our April 9th newsletter and our website article summarizing the entire city council meeting, Mentor and Mentor-on-the-Lake are continuing their partnership to lower costs on road repair projects by combining work under shared contracts. The collaboration, in place since 2016, allows Mentor-on-the-Lake to benefit from more competitive pricing through Mentor’s annual program.

For 2026, Mentor’s asphalt road repair initiative totals $1.3 million, including $86,832 in paving work in Mentor-on-the-Lake. That portion will be funded by Mentor-on-the-Lake, which will also handle inspection and verify completed work before payment. Phillips Paving will complete the asphalt work, while SBJ Consulting will oversee inspections.

Both cities have approved the agreement, keeping the project on schedule for completion by late August. In Mentor-on-the-Lake, asphalt improvements will focus on Hickory Street.

The partnership also includes concrete repairs. Mentor’s 2026 concrete program, valued at $2 million, includes $32,951 in work within Mentor-on-the-Lake. These repairs will take place on Larkspur Drive and will be funded by Mentor-on-the-Lake. A&J Cement Contractors will complete the project by mid-October, with inspection services again handled by SBJ Consulting.

By combining projects, both cities aim to secure savings through bulk pricing while maintaining oversight of local work.

⚾ Messick Flirts With History as Guardians Top Orioles 4-2

Parker Messick fell one inning short of history but delivered a dominant outing in the Cleveland Guardians’ 4-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. The rookie left-hander carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning in just his 11th major league start.

Messick controlled the game through eight innings, allowing two walks and striking out nine while facing just one batter over the minimum. The no-hit bid ended on a leadoff single in the ninth, followed by another hit, before he exited to a standing ovation after 112 pitches.

The Orioles threatened late, loading the bases and scoring twice, but Cleveland held on by recording the final two outs.

José Ramírez powered the offense with a two-run homer in the first inning, and later RBI singles added key insurance runs.

⚾ Cougars Edged by Gilmour Academy in 1-0 Pitching Duel

The Lake Catholic Cougars fell to Gilmour Academy in a tightly contested matchup Thursday, dropping a 1-0 decision despite a strong performance on the mound.

Lake Catholic managed just one hit in the game, a double by Brayden Mann, while drawing four walks. However, the Cougars were unable to capitalize on those opportunities, as Gilmour Academy’s pitching staff kept runners from crossing the plate.

On the defensive side, Tyler Hribar delivered an impressive outing for Lake Catholic, pitching six complete innings. He allowed eight hits and one earned run while recording six strikeouts and issuing just one walk.

With the loss, the Cougars move to 5-4 on the season. The two teams are set to meet again today, with Lake Catholic hosting Gilmour Academy for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Here’s an un-boring way to invest that billionaires have quietly leveraged for decades

If you have enough money that you think about buckets for your capital…

Ever invest in something you know will have low returns—just for the sake of diversifying?

CDs… Bonds… REITs…  :(

Sure, these “boring” investments have some merits. But you probably overlooked one historically exclusive asset class:

It’s been famously leveraged by billionaires like Bezos and Gates, but just never been widely accessible until now.

It’s had attractive growth and hasn’t tended to move in line with other markets from 1995 to 2025.

It’s not private equity or real estate. Surprisingly, it’s postwar and contemporary art.

And since 2019, over 70,000 people have started investing in SHARES of artworks featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso through a platform called Masterworks.

  • 28 exits to date

  • $1,275,000,000+ invested

  • Annualized net returns like 14.6%, 17.8%, and 17.8%
