📰 City Council Tackles Construction, Traffic and Recreation Issues at April 21 Meeting

Mentor City Council approved a series of infrastructure, budget and community measures during its April 21, 2026 meeting, with major attention focused on construction planning, road repairs and public safety concerns.
Council approved an ordinance revising appropriations and authorizing transfers, including $65,000 tied to the Garfield Splash Pad project as a contingency for possible foundation-related needs and $25,000 from the cultural fund to support the James Garfield statue. During discussion, council members raised concerns about whether contingency funds on public projects are being used too freely and said contractor accountability should remain a priority.
Council also approved an easement agreement connected to the future Fire Station No. 3 on Plaza Boulevard, along with a $92,600 contract for emergency culvert replacement on Savannah Drive after a March rain event caused a washout and sinkhole. Officials said the damaged pipe dated to 1985 and requires full replacement.
In other business, council adopted resolutions recognizing May as ALS Awareness Month and honoring Revolutionary War veterans Roger Asham Crane and Ebenezer Wilson.
The city manager reported that bids for Fire Station No. 3 are due May 15, with a possible award on June 2 and construction expected to last about 14 months. Residents also heard updates on AT&T fiber installation, the King Memorial Bridge closure, the 2026 asphalt and concrete repair programs, and new businesses opening in the city.
During public comment, a resident asked the city to keep the Garfield tennis courts lined exclusively for tennis during resurfacing, saying pickleball lines could create safety concerns and interfere with competitive play.

🌍 Happy Earth Day! How It All Got Started
Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 and marks the beginning of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Before the first Earth Day, pollution was widely accepted as a byproduct of economic growth. Factories released smoke and waste, leaded gasoline fueled oversized cars, and environmental concerns received little public attention.
Awareness began to shift in 1962 when Rachel Carson published Silent Spring, a bestselling book that exposed the dangers of pesticides and pollution while linking environmental damage to human health.
The idea for Earth Day came from U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin after he witnessed the devastating 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by student anti-war protests, Nelson wanted to organize a nationwide environmental teach-in.
He recruited activist Denis Hayes to lead the effort, and they chose April 22, 1970, because it fell between Spring Break and final exams, maximizing student participation.
The event quickly expanded beyond college campuses, drawing support from civic groups, faith organizations, and communities nationwide. On the first Earth Day, an estimated 20 million Americans — about 10% of the U.S. population at the time — took part in rallies, marches, and educational events demanding cleaner air, safer water, and stronger environmental protections.
Earth Day is now celebrated worldwide as a symbol of environmental action and awareness.

🌞 Why Vitamin D Matters More Than You Think in Northeast Ohio

Living in Northeast Ohio comes with four true seasons—but it also comes with a Vitamin D challenge many people underestimate. From late fall through early spring, the sun sits too low in the sky for many residents to make meaningful Vitamin D through skin exposure, even on bright days. That means some Mentor residents may go months relying mostly on diet and stored levels.
Vitamin D3 is widely known for helping bones, but it also plays a major role in muscle function, balance, immune signaling, and recovery. For older adults, low levels may contribute to reduced strength and a greater risk of falls. For active adults, it can quietly affect muscle soreness, stamina, and how well the body recovers after exercise. If you feel unusually sluggish through winter, low Vitamin D can sometimes be one piece of the puzzle.
Another overlooked issue: carrying extra body weight may lower available Vitamin D because it can become stored in body fat rather than circulating where the body can use it efficiently. That means some people need closer monitoring even if they take a supplement.
Food sources help, but many people don’t get enough consistently. Fatty fish, egg yolks, fortified milk, fortified plant milks, and fortified cereals can all contribute. However, food alone may not be enough for everyone during Ohio winters.
The smartest move is not guessing—it’s testing. A simple blood test can show whether your level is low, adequate, or needs medical attention. Too little can be a problem, but too much supplementation can also cause issues over time.
Last week we focused on magnesium which actually helps you absorb, transport and activate vitamin D.
For Mentor residents, Vitamin D3 isn’t just a “winter topic.” It’s a year-round health marker worth discussing with your healthcare provider—especially if you spend most days indoors, use sunscreen consistently, are over 60, or feel persistently tired.

⚾ DeLauter’s Clutch Triple Powers Guardians’ Late Rally Over Astros
The Cleveland Guardians mounted a late comeback Tuesday night, scoring six runs in the eighth inning to beat the Houston Astros 8-5 at Progressive Field.
Chase DeLauter delivered the key hit, lining a bases-loaded triple down the left-field line to drive in Angel Martínez, Bryan Rocchio, and Steven Kwan. It was DeLauter’s first career triple and snapped a recent slump.
Cleveland trailed 4-3 entering the inning before Rocchio added an RBI single to extend his hitting streak to eight games, and Kyle Manzardo followed with a two-run single to finish the rally.
The comeback spoiled a milestone night for Jose Altuve, who became the third player in Astros history to appear in 2,000 career games. He finished hitless.
The Guardians scored early on an RBI single by George Valera in the first inning and a solo homer from Martínez in the second.
Houston responded with a three-run fifth inning led by Yordan Alvarez, who drove in three runs. Brice Matthews and Carlos Correa also had RBI hits.
Peyton Pallette earned the win for Cleveland, while Enyel de los Santos took the loss for Houston.
The win gave Cleveland victories in four of its last six home games, while Houston fell to 2-10 on the road.

The Cougars scored six runs on six hits and controlled the game after pulling ahead in the middle innings. Elyria Catholic pushed across two runs in the fifth, but Lake Catholic quickly answered and maintained the lead.
Micah Nyetrae led the Cougar offense by going 2-for-3 at the plate, helping pace a balanced lineup.
