💦 Mentor Delays Civic Center Pool, Garfield Park Splashpad Until 2027

City of Mentor

The City of Mentor has announced that reconstruction of the Mentor Civic Center pool complex will not be finished in time for the 2026 swim season. Officials cited unexpected construction issues and unfavorable weather as the primary reasons for the delay.

Work on the new splashpad complex at Eleanor B. Garfield Park has also fallen behind schedule, pushing its opening date back as well.

City leaders now expect both projects to be ready for the 2027 season and say the completed facilities will provide upgraded amenities for residents.

While construction continues, families will still have access to summer recreation at Morton Park, where the pool and splashpad are set to open on June 1 as planned. The city will also offer discounted seasonal passes for the 2026 season beginning May 1.

Officials expressed appreciation for the community’s patience and said they look forward to opening both new attractions next year.

🥽 Mentor Pool Passes Go on Sale May 1 With 20% Discount for 2026

City of Mentor

Mentor residents can begin purchasing 2026 aquatic passes starting May 1 at the Parks and Recreation Office inside the Mentor Community Recreation Center, 6000 Heisley Road. Sales will take place Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To receive resident pricing, buyers must provide a current utility bill showing their name and address along with a valid photo ID confirming Mentor residency. Officials noted that outdoor aquatic passes apply only to outdoor facilities and do not include access to the indoor pools at the recreation center.

Because reconstruction of the Mentor Civic Center pool and the Garfield Park splash pad remains ongoing, both facilities will stay closed for the 2026 season. City officials expect the projects to be completed in time for the 2027 swim season.

For this summer, residents can use the Morton Park pool and splashpad, which are scheduled to open June 1. Seasonal passes will be offered at a 20% discount for the 2026 season.

Daily admission will be $10 per person. Discounted resident season pass rates include $60 for adults ages 18 to 59, $48 for youth ages 17 and under, and $48 for seniors age 60 and older. Non-resident rates are double those amounts. Family passes for three members are priced at $120 for residents and $240 for non-residents, with added fees for extra family members.

🚧 Mentor Approves Emergency Savannah Drive Repair

Mentor City Council has approved emergency repairs for a failed culvert on Savannah Drive after heavy rainfall caused a roadway washout and sinkhole earlier this year.

City engineers said a major rain event on March 11 damaged aging storm infrastructure beneath the road. The failed culvert, a 100-foot corrugated metal pipe measuring 72 inches in diameter, was installed in 1985.

Officials said corrosion was found throughout the pipe. As it deteriorated, a void formed beneath the road surface, creating a sinkhole mainly on the west side of Savannah Drive. The road and nearby sidewalk were closed for safety.

Council approved a $92,600 contract with JTO Inc. of Mentor to replace the structure with a new 72-inch aluminized corrugated steel culvert. City staff said the new pipe is expected to last 50 to 75 years.

Officials hope materials can be secured quickly so work can begin soon.

City leaders said culverts and other stormwater systems are critical to protecting roads, sidewalks, and nearby homes.

Residents should expect continued closures or temporary disruptions until repairs are complete. Restoring the roadway remains a city priority.

⚾ Captains Answer Back, Rout Whitecaps 7-1 in Road Win

The Lake County Captains bounced back Thursday night, defeating the West Michigan Whitecaps 7-1 on the road after losing by the same score a night earlier.

West Michigan took an early lead in the first inning on a solo home run by Ricardo Hurtado, but Lake County responded in the second. Maick Collado tied the game with an RBI double that scored Bennett Thompson.

The Captains moved ahead 2-1 in the third when Jaison Chourio scored on a double-play grounder. Collado added to the lead in the fourth with a solo home run to right-center field, making it 3-1.

Lake County’s pitching staff held the Whitecaps scoreless the rest of the way and protected the lead into the late innings.

The Captains added insurance in the seventh when Dean Curley hit an RBI double to score Chourio for a 4-1 advantage.

Lake County broke it open in the ninth when Ryan Cesarini launched a three-run homer to center, scoring Curley and Aaron Walton to cap the scoring.

The win gave the Captains a split of the first two games of the road series.
