🚨 Mentor High School student arrested on campus by Kirtland police
MENTOR - A student at Mentor High School has been taken into custody during the school day and is now facing a serious criminal charge tied to alleged obscene material involving a minor.
School officials informed families that the arrest was carried out by officers from the Kirtland Police Department after a warrant had been issued. The school’s resource officer alerted administrators as officers were already en route to the campus.
District leadership emphasized that the situation is being handled entirely by law enforcement, not as part of a school-led investigation. Because of this, officials said they are unable to share further details at this time.
Court records indicate the charge involves pandering obscenity connected to a minor. The identity of the student has not been disclosed.
School officials confirmed the student will not return to campus. They also noted there is currently no indication that the alleged activity occurred on school grounds or during any school-related events.
While the case remains under investigation, the district stated it is prepared to assist authorities if needed and reiterated its commitment to student safety and maintaining a secure learning environment.
Authorities have not yet released additional information, and the situation remains under active investigation.

🏫 Mentor Schools Warn of Cuts Without Voter Approval of New Levy
MENTOR - Mentor Public Schools is asking voters to approve a 4.9-mill operating levy on the May 5 ballot, a measure district leaders say is necessary to maintain staffing and student services.
The levy would generate about $13.5 million annually to fund expenses such as personnel, transportation, safety, and building maintenance. For homeowners, it would cost roughly $169 per $100,000 of property value, or about $415 per year for a typical home. The measure would last about six years and is the district’s first request for new operating funds in a decade.
District leaders say the request follows months of financial discussions and outreach efforts. The district has been deficit-spending since 2021, using reserves to cover rising costs for salaries, benefits, transportation, and utilities.
Cost-saving steps have included staffing adjustments, building closures and sales, redistricting, and departmental cuts. Even so, projections show reserves dropping below the board’s minimum target by 2028.
If voters reject the levy, officials plan to cut about $3.4 million for the 2026–27 school year, which could mean fewer staff, larger class sizes, reduced transportation, and higher extracurricular fees. Additional reductions are already planned through retirements.
The school board approved placing the levy on the ballot in a 4-1 vote. One member opposed the measure, arguing that more spending cuts should be made before seeking additional taxpayer support. Critics have also raised concerns about district spending priorities, while school officials maintain that further reductions would more directly affect students and educational services.

To date, nearly 400 people have voted in this poll and 65% say no or leaning no.

⚾ Ramírez Hits 300-Steal Milestone as Guardians Surge Past A’s
José Ramírez reached a major milestone while helping lift the Cleveland Guardians to a 14-6 comeback win over the Athletics on Saturday in West Sacramento.
Cleveland took control in the fifth inning with a four-run surge. Ramírez delivered a go-ahead two-run double, then stole third base for his 300th career steal, joining Kenny Lofton as the only players in franchise history to reach the mark and becoming one of a few active players to do so.
The Guardians kept building from there. A sacrifice fly added to the lead, and David Fry followed with a home run in the sixth. Rookie Travis Bazzana recorded his first major league hit with a two-run single in the seventh and quickly added his first stolen base.
Kyle Manzardo extended the lead with a three-run homer in the eighth, and Cleveland capped its highest-scoring game in nearly three years with additional runs in the ninth.
The Athletics struck early behind two home runs from Shea Langeliers, but their offense stalled as Cleveland pulled away. Nick Kurtz added two hits, though his streak of games with a walk came to an end.
Cleveland’s starter earned the win despite early damage, while Oakland’s pitcher struggled during the decisive middle innings.

⚾ Captains’ Late Rally Falls Short Against Sky Carp
The Lake County Captains fell 5-1 to the Beloit Sky Carp on Saturday, unable to overcome an early deficit despite a late push. Beloit took control in the second inning, stringing together key hits to build a multi-run lead and set the tone for the game.
Lake County struggled to generate offense for much of the contest while Beloit added insurance runs, including a solo home run in the seventh that extended the gap. The Captains showed signs of life in the ninth inning, managing to bring a run across, but the rally ended before further damage could be done.
On the mound, Lake County cycled through five pitchers. Starter Justin Campbell lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing three runs and taking the loss.
