🗳️ Proposed 4.9-Mill Levy Rejected by Mentor School District Voters

Voters in the Mentor School District rejected a proposed five-year, 4.9-mill additional levy during the May 5 primary election, according to unofficial final results from the Lake County Elections Board.

The levy failed by a vote of 8,256 against to 7,039 in favor.

District officials said the levy would have generated about $13.5 million annually for school operations and facility expenses. The Lake County Auditor’s Office estimated the tax would have cost homeowners roughly $172 per year for every $100,000 of residential property value. The average home value in Mentor is $242,050.

School leaders previously warned the district faces increasing financial pressure tied to aging facilities and operational costs. Mentor Schools operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, Mentor High School, autism programs, preschool facilities and support buildings throughout the district.

District officials indicated the levy’s defeat could lead to additional reductions affecting staffing, programs and student opportunities as the school system continues addressing budget challenges.

🔍 Mentor Softball Coach Placed on Leave Amid Internal Review

An internal investigation has led to the temporary leave of Mentor High School’s head softball coach, according to school officials.

The inquiry began after an anonymous concern was brought forward, prompting district leadership to review the situation. Specific details about the nature of the concern have not been disclosed, and officials have indicated that local law enforcement is not involved.

In the meantime, assistant coach Josh Kobetitsch has been appointed to serve as interim head coach. School athletic leadership expressed confidence in his ability to guide the team, citing his experience within the program and his familiarity with its players and structure.

District officials have not provided a timeline for the investigation or indicated when further information may be released.

⚡ NOPEC Unveils New Electric Rates for Summer 2026

Residents in Northeast Ohio communities served by the Illuminating Company will soon see updated electricity pricing, as NOPEC has released its new rate options beginning with the June 2026 meter read.

Customers will have three plans to choose from, each offering a different approach to pricing stability. The standard program rate is set just under 10 cents per kilowatt-hour and will remain in place through the August 2026 meter read. For those seeking longer-term predictability, a 12-month fixed plan comes in slightly lower, while a 24-month option is priced slightly higher but guarantees stability over a longer period.

In Mentor, which participates in NOPEC, residents can review these options and decide which plan best fits their household needs. Additional support and details are available through NOPEC’s website and customer care services. Consumers can also explore alternative energy suppliers through the state’s comparison tool to ensure they are getting the most competitive rate.

🦴 Your Back, Hips, and Feet Hurt for a Reason — Here’s What’s Causing It

If your back feels tight, your hips ache, and your feet hurt by the end of the day—you’re not alone. And it’s probably not just “getting older.”

For many adults, especially those working desk jobs or spending long hours sitting, the issue isn’t injury—it’s imbalance.

Here’s what’s happening.

When you sit for extended periods, your hip flexors tighten and your glutes (the muscles that should support your hips and lower back) essentially “turn off.” Over time, that shifts stress into your lower back and down into your knees and feet.

Now add in another factor: footwear.

Many everyday shoes—especially worn-out sneakers or unsupportive slip-ons—don’t provide enough structure. That lack of support forces your feet and ankles to compensate, which travels upward into your knees, hips, and back.

So the pain you feel in one area is often coming from somewhere else.

The fix isn’t complicated—but it does need to be intentional.

First, break up sitting time. Even standing for a few minutes every hour helps reset your posture and reduce tension buildup.

Second, “wake up” your glutes. This doesn’t mean a full workout. Even simple movements like squeezing your glutes while standing or taking short walks can re-engage those muscles.

Third, take a closer look at your shoes. If they’re worn down or lack support, they may be contributing more than you realize.

For many people in Mentor, these small adjustments can reduce daily discomfort without needing major changes.

Pain isn’t always a signal of damage—it’s often a signal that something in your daily routine needs to shift.

🏀 Cavaliers Stumble in Second-Round Opener Against Top-Seeded Detroit

The Cleveland Cavaliers dropped Game 1 of their second-round playoff series Tuesday night, falling 111-101 to the Detroit Pistons despite a late fourth-quarter rally.

Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 23 points, while James Harden added 22 and Max Strus scored 19. The Cavaliers erased most of an 18-point deficit and tied the game at 93 with 5:28 remaining after a personal scoring burst from Harden.

Detroit answered immediately, however, as Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren connected on three straight scoring plays to regain control and seal the win.

The Pistons were led by Cunningham’s 23 points, along with 20 from Tobias Harris and 19 from Duncan Robinson.

Cleveland struggled to contain Detroit early and trailed 59-46 at halftime. The Cavs cut the deficit to three points multiple times in the second half but could not complete the comeback.

Jarrett Allen, coming off a dominant Game 7 performance against Toronto, was limited to two points and three rebounds.

The loss ends Cleveland’s momentum after advancing past Toronto in seven games in the opening round. Game 2 is Thursday night in Detroit.

⚾ Royals Rally Past Guardians Behind Fourth-Inning Surge

The Cleveland Guardians fell 5-3 to the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night after giving up the lead in the fourth inning at Kauffman Stadium.

Rhys Hoskins put Cleveland ahead with a three-run homer off the left-field foul pole after the Guardians erased an early 2-0 deficit. Kansas City responded immediately with Michael Massey’s two-run homer, then added another run on Isaac Collins’ solo shot in the sixth.

Guardians starter Gavin Williams allowed five runs and took his first loss since March after winning five straight decisions.

Cleveland could not rally against the Royals bullpen, while Kansas City earned its fifth consecutive win.

The series continues Wednesday with Joey Cantillo scheduled to start for Cleveland.
