🛣️ Mentor Gives Major Update on Roads, Sidewalks, and Repairs
Mentor residents are beginning to see visible progress on several major infrastructure projects happening throughout the city this spring.
During Monday night’s council meeting, city officials said more than 1,800 feet of new sidewalk has already been installed along Tyler Boulevard, putting the project roughly halfway to completion. Officials said the project has received positive feedback from businesses in the area, especially those concerned about employee safety and pedestrian access.
The city also announced that resurfacing work on Lakeshore Boulevard resumed May 4 and should wrap up within the next week and a half. Most of the remaining work involves concrete repairs near the intersection of Lakeshore Boulevard and State Route 306. Traffic will remain open with temporary lane restrictions while crews finish the project.
Meanwhile, emergency repairs on the damaged culvert beneath Savannah Drive reached a major milestone this week. Officials confirmed the replacement culvert was successfully installed just ahead of the latest heavy rain event. The roadway will remain closed temporarily while crews complete backfilling and pavement restoration.
City leaders also noted that FirstEnergy has started replacing burned-out streetlights identified throughout Mentor following recent city inspections.

🏃🏻➡️ Mentor Dominates Euclid Relays Behind Breakout Star Rapolas Ogorodnikas
Mentor’s boys track and field team captured the Euclid Relays title May 8, scoring 135 points behind standout performances from sophomore sprinter Rapolas Ogorodnikas.
Despite missing several athletes because of a prom scheduling conflict, the Cardinals dominated the meet with strong individual and relay efforts.
Ogorodnikas earned boys meet MVP honors after winning the 100-meter dash in an area-best 10.84 seconds and finishing second in the 400 with a school-record 48.57 — the fastest 400 time in the coverage area this season. He narrowly trailed Glenville star Jay’Vier Kerr in one of the meet’s top races.
Mentor also excelled in the relays. The Cardinals’ 4x800 team of Gabe Tulenson, Carter Schaubert, Michael Maynard, and Matthew Penkowski posted an area-best 8:01.88, while the 4x400 relay team finished third in 3:25.74, the area’s second-fastest mark this year.
Elsewhere, Euclid’s Tamra Houston won the girls 400, Perry’s Mason Bilicic led the shot put competition, and South captured the girls 4x100 relay title.
⚾ Lake Catholic Uses Big Fifth Inning to Defeat Nordonia
The Lake Catholic Cougars baseball team rallied past Nordonia for a 5-2 non-conference victory, using a four-run fifth inning to secure the win.
After both teams traded runs in the first inning, the game stayed tight through the middle innings. Nordonia moved ahead with a run in the fourth, but Lake Catholic answered in the fifth with a four-run rally that proved to be the difference.
The Cougars finished with 11 hits, all singles, led by leadoff hitter Pete Malchesky, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Ben Mitchell delivered a key hit that drove in two runs during the decisive fifth inning, while Patrick Martin added two hits and scored once.
Tyler Hribar earned the win for Lake Catholic, pitching three innings while allowing two hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts. Quinn Stayer also worked three innings, giving up one hit and one unearned run.
With the victory, Lake Catholic improved to 12-8 on the season. The Cougars return to action Monday at NDCL with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
