🌊 Mentor Debates $1.2 Million First Step in Lakefront Preservation Plan
MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor City Council spent much of its May 5 meeting discussing the future of the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve, ultimately advancing a major shoreline preservation engineering project to second reading.
The proposal would authorize a $1.2 million professional services agreement with SmithGroup Architects and Landscape Architects to begin engineering and design work aimed at slowing severe erosion along the Lake Erie shoreline at the preserve.
City officials said the project represents the first phase of a larger estimated $3.5 million engineering effort tied to a long-term shoreline stabilization plan. The city has already secured $1.75 million in federal funding through congressional appropriations assistance from Congressman Dave Joyce’s office.
Officials presented aerial imagery and erosion data showing dramatic land loss over the last two decades. According to city estimates, roughly 12 acres have been lost between 2007 and 2025 due to shoreline recession.
The engineering work would include stormwater analysis, wave action studies, preliminary design and permitting. Proposed solutions may include offshore barrier islands, beach restoration and shoreline grading designed to reduce erosion impacts.
Council members debated the long-term cost and effectiveness of the project. Some questioned whether the city should commit to additional future spending without voter approval, while others argued delaying action could place city assets, wetlands and marina infrastructure at greater risk.
The legislation was not approved immediately. Instead, council voted unanimously to move the ordinance to second reading to allow additional review.
City officials said the first engineering phase is expected to take 12 to 16 months.

A High-Energy Family Hotspot + A Relaxing Waterfront Escape
Last Sunday, we promised one destination packed with nonstop family fun and another perfect for slowing down near the water. This week’s Travel Sunday feature delivers both—and each has become increasingly popular with Northeast Ohio travelers looking for very different kinds of summer getaways.
🎢 Orlando
When it comes to high-energy family vacations, Orlando still dominates summer travel plans for Ohio families. Between world-famous theme parks, water parks, interactive attractions, and endless entertainment, it remains one of the busiest travel destinations in America.
Families continue flocking to places like Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, but many travelers are also discovering smaller attractions, indoor entertainment centers, and resort-style pools that help fill entire vacation weeks.
Why Ohio families love it: Nonstop activities, unforgettable experiences for kids, and something new every trip.
🌅 Mackinac Island
For travelers looking to unplug and relax, Mackinac Island offers a completely different pace. Located between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, the island is famous for its waterfront views, charming downtown, bike paths, and peaceful atmosphere.
Cars are not allowed on the island, which gives the entire destination a slower, quieter feel. Visitors travel mainly by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage, or on foot. Families enjoy exploring the shoreline, visiting fudge shops, and taking in beautiful Lake Huron sunsets.
Why Ohio families love it: Relaxing waterfront scenery, unique atmosphere, and a true escape from everyday stress.
💡 Travel Tip of the Week
If you’re considering a major destination like Orlando, mid-August can sometimes offer lower hotel rates as some Southern schools return earlier than Ohio schools.
🌞 Coming Next Sunday
We’ll feature two more trending summer destinations—including one outdoor adventure hotspot and one surprisingly affordable family beach town that Northeast Ohio travelers are starting to rediscover.

🏀 Harden Delivers Late as Cavaliers Beat Pistons in Crucial Game 3
The Cleveland Cavaliers kept their Eastern Conference semifinal series alive Saturday night with a 116-109 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 3, cutting Detroit’s lead to 2-1.
After struggling late in the first two games, Cleveland came through in the clutch behind James Harden and Max Strus. Harden hit several key baskets in the final minutes, while Strus made the game-changing play with a steal and fast-break layup that gave the Cavaliers a 106-104 lead with under three minutes remaining.
Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 35 points and 10 rebounds, while Harden added 19 points and Jarrett Allen scored 18. The game featured 11 lead changes before the Cavaliers pulled away late after forcing consecutive Detroit turnovers.
Pistons star Cade Cunningham recorded a playoff triple-double with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, but committed eight turnovers, including three late miscues that hurt Detroit’s comeback chances.
Harden answered criticism from the first two games by delivering in crunch time, including a decisive step-back 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Mitchell also surpassed 2,000 career postseason points, reaching the milestone in just 73 playoff games. Tobias Harris added 21 points for Detroit, whose five-game playoff winning streak ended. Game 4 is set for Monday night in Cleveland.

⚾ Guardians Fall in 11 Innings Despite Strong Start From Bibee
The Cleveland Guardians dropped a tight 2-1 decision to the Minnesota Twins in 11 innings Saturday night at Progressive Field, ending the club’s three-game winning streak.
Byron Buxton accounted for both Minnesota runs, including the game-winning RBI double in the 11th inning that scored automatic runner Matt Wallner. Buxton also opened the game with a leadoff home run against Guardians starter Tanner Bibee.
Cleveland tied the game in the fourth inning when José Ramírez singled, stole second base and scored on a Kyle Manzardo base hit. The Guardians threatened repeatedly late, loading the bases in both the ninth and 10th innings, but Minnesota reliever Eric Orze escaped each jam.
Bibee delivered a strong outing despite the no-decision, striking out a season-high nine batters over six innings while allowing just one run. Cleveland and Minnesota combined for only four hits in the pitchers’ duel.
Rule 5 Draft pick Peyton Pallette took the loss after allowing the deciding unearned run in extra innings. Luis García earned the save for Minnesota.
