🧸 Mentor Protest Calls Attention to Rising Child Care Costs and Provider Burnout
MENTOR, Ohio — Child care providers and parents in Mentor joined the nationwide “National Day Without Child Care” protest Monday to highlight rising costs and growing challenges facing families and daycare workers.
Dozens gathered along Mentor Avenue while some providers, including My Kids Childcare, closed for the day to demonstrate how essential child care is to the workforce.
Owner Anita Dokollari said many families can no longer afford increasing tuition costs, while providers face burnout and low wages. Protesters called for stronger support and reforms to help centers remain open and accessible.
The rally also focused on Ohio’s child care cost-sharing program, launched in September, which splits expenses among the state, employers, and families. State data shows only a small portion of the program’s $10 million budget has been used so far, with just 21 employers participating.
State Representative Jerry Cirino said universal child care is not currently being considered but encouraged employers to use available tax credits and assistance programs.

💡 Utility Upgrades Increase Scope of Golf Course Parking Lot Project
MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor City Council approved a change order for ongoing improvements at Black Brook Golf Course during its May 5 meeting.
The additional funding will support expanded underground utility work connected to the golf course parking lot reconstruction project.
City engineers said FirstEnergy requested additional conduit infrastructure and upgraded underground vaults to support buried electrical service installations. The revisions added roughly 2,000 feet of conduit to the project.
The parking lot project includes widened drive aisles, 11 new parking spaces, upgraded handicap access, decorative lighting, landscaping improvements and underground utility relocation.
Officials said most of the parking lot paving is expected within weeks, although some final asphalt work near the clubhouse will wait until utility providers complete underground installations.
Council unanimously approved the emergency legislation.

💡 The Energy Wasters Most Northeast Ohio Homeowners Never Notice
If your upstairs bedrooms feel hot every summer no matter how long the AC runs, the problem may not actually be your air conditioner.
Many homes across Mentor and Lake County were built between the 1960s and 1990s, and they often share the same hidden cooling problems—especially split-levels, colonials, and homes with additions over garages.
One major issue is attic heat buildup. During sunny afternoons, attic temperatures can become dramatically hotter than outdoor temperatures. If insulation is thin or uneven, that heat radiates into second-floor rooms for hours.
Another overlooked problem is airflow imbalance. Homeowners often close vents in unused rooms hoping to save money, but that can actually reduce circulation throughout the house and create hot spots elsewhere.
West-facing rooms are another common issue in Northeast Ohio summers. Afternoon sun beats against windows and exterior walls, especially in neighborhoods where older shade trees were removed over the years.
Many homes also have hidden duct leakage in attic or basement spaces. Cool air escapes before it ever reaches the room you are trying to cool.
One quick test: walk room-to-room around 3–5 p.m. Place your hand near supply vents and compare airflow strength. Weak airflow in one room often reveals a balancing or duct issue.
Other hidden energy wasters include:
blocked return vents
dirty HVAC filters
recessed ceiling lights leaking attic heat
attic pull-down stairs without insulation
furniture covering cold-air returns
For many Mentor homeowners, the real problem is not the AC unit itself—it is how heat and airflow move through the house. Catching those issues early can improve comfort and reduce summer electric bills.

🏀 Mitchell’s Historic Second Half Powers Cavaliers Past Pistons
Donovan Mitchell delivered a historic playoff performance Monday night, scoring 39 second-half points to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 112-103 win over the Detroit Pistons and even their second-round series.
Mitchell finished with 43 points overall and tied the NBA postseason record for points in a half, matching Eric “Sleepy” Floyd’s mark from 1987. He reached the record on a late free throw but missed a chance to break it on the next attempt.
Cleveland took control with a dominant 24-0 run that stretched from the end of the second quarter into the opening minutes of the third. Mitchell scored 15 points during the surge as the Cavaliers erased a halftime deficit and pulled away.
The Cavaliers shot 10-for-12 during the run and turned Detroit turnovers into key points. The scoring streak was the longest in a playoff game since Minnesota accomplished the same feat in 2024.
Evan Mobley added 17 points, five blocks and three steals for Cleveland, which stayed unbeaten at home in the postseason.
Detroit was led by Caris LeVert’s season-high 24 points. Cade Cunningham finished with 19 points, while Tobias Harris added 16.
After Detroit rallied from an early deficit in the first half, Cleveland’s explosive third quarter proved decisive. The series returns to Detroit for Game 5 on Wednesday night.

⚾ Guardians Roll Past Angels Again Behind Cantillo, Bazzana
The Cleveland Guardians continued their dominance over the Los Angeles Angels at home with a 7-2 win Monday night at Progressive Field.
Joey Cantillo pitched six scoreless innings to improve to 3-1, allowing five hits while striking out four. Cleveland took control early when Brayan Rocchio drove in two runs in the second inning.
The Guardians broke the game open with a five-run third inning, taking advantage of four walks. David Fry drew a bases-loaded walk, Daniel Schneemann added a two-run single and rookie Travis Bazzana capped the rally with a two-run double to center field.
Bazzana, the top pick in the 2024 amateur draft, continued his strong rookie campaign as Cleveland improved to 28-4 at home against the Angels since 2014.
The Guardians drew a season-high 10 walks in the victory. Fry and Kyle Manzardo each had two hits, while Jo Adell drove in a run for Los Angeles.
The Angels have now lost 16 of their last 21 games.
Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt missed his second straight game because of illness, with bench coach Tony Arnerich serving as acting manager. Vogt is expected back Tuesday.
