Tensions Rise in Mentor Schools as Officials Debate Cuts and Future Levy

MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor school officials are considering another operating levy after voters rejected the district’s 4.9-mill request for the second time in six months, triggering debate over cuts, administrator compensation and student services.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Treasurer Bill Wade outlined about $5.9 million in proposed cuts and new revenue measures following the May 5 levy defeat. The levy would have generated about $13.5 million annually for staffing, transportation, safety and maintenance.

Proposed reductions include staffing cuts through attrition, lower overtime and discretionary spending, reduced travel costs, and the elimination of some STEAM, music and art positions linked to declining enrollment.

The district also plans to raise preschool tuition, pay-to-participate fees and classroom supply charges.

Board members also debated administrator benefits, with one proposal to eliminate retirement pickup benefits that could save roughly $700,000 annually.

Officials discussed eliminating high school busing, expanding walk zones and creating centralized bus stops. Additional cuts could include larger class sizes, extracurricular reductions and possible building consolidations if another levy fails.

The board will continue discussions May 26 on budget reductions and possible levy options for the November ballot.

🚂 Union Pacific’s Legendary Big Boy No. 4014 to Visit Northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Railfans across Northeast Ohio will soon have a chance to see Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy No. 4014 as the famous steam locomotive makes several regional stops during a nationwide tour celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary.

The locomotive, recognized as the world’s largest operating steam engine, departed Wyoming in May and is traveling across multiple states before arriving in Ohio in June. The visit is historic because Big Boy engines never operated in Ohio during their original service years.

No. 4014 is scheduled to arrive in Ohio on June 6 with stops in Continental and Fostoria before heading to Bellevue. Public viewing there will not be available, but fans can see the locomotive during whistle stops in Lorain and Euclid on June 8.

The Lorain stop is planned near West 11th Street and Reid Avenue from about 1:15 to 1:30 p.m., while the Euclid stop near the Chardon Road crossing is scheduled from approximately 2:30 to 3 p.m.

The locomotive will later return to Ohio in July with a stop in Struthers on July 12 and a final Northeast Ohio appearance July 13 at the former Nickel Plate train station in Rocky River.

Built in 1941, Big Boy No. 4014 was designed to haul heavy freight trains during World War II and became famous for its enormous size and power. Union Pacific restored the locomotive to operating condition in 2019, and it now tours the country as a symbol of American railroad history.

👷🏻‍♂️ Mentor Moves Forward With Municipal Maintenance Building Improvements

MENTOR, Ohio — The City of Mentor is moving ahead with plans to replace the HVAC system at its Municipal Maintenance facility, a project aimed at improving energy efficiency and working conditions for city employees.

City officials are accepting contractor bids for the “Mentor Municipal Maintenance HVAC Replacement” project through May 29. The work will focus on replacing aging heating and cooling equipment at the maintenance building used for public works operations.

The project is being overseen by the City of Mentor and Cleveland-based engineering firm Denk Associates. Public Works Director Lorne Vernon approved the bid package in April 2026.

Although the city has not released a construction estimate, the rebid process suggests officials are seeking revised contractor proposals before moving forward. Cities often rebid projects when initial pricing exceeds expectations or additional competition is needed.

The Municipal Maintenance facility supports city vehicle servicing, equipment storage, and public works coordination. Officials expect the HVAC replacement to improve reliability and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Bids will be opened publicly at Mentor Municipal Center on May 29, with a contract award expected later this year.

🍽️ Dinner Rescue: What’s for Dinner Tonight?

Easy & Tasty Meals on a Budget!

Finding dinners that are quick, affordable, and something the kids will actually eat can feel impossible some nights. This week’s Dinner Rescue features two family-friendly meals that deliver comfort-food flavor without relying on drive-thru food or ultra-processed freezer meals.

🧀 Creamy Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Rice Skillet

This one-pan dinner tastes like comfort food but sneaks in plenty of protein and vegetables at the same time. Tender chicken, fluffy rice, broccoli, and a creamy cheddar sauce all come together in a warm skillet meal that feels hearty without being overly heavy.

The cheesy flavor helps win over picky eaters, while parents will appreciate that it uses simple ingredients and keeps cleanup easy. It’s also budget-friendly since rice and broccoli stretch the meal without sacrificing flavor.

🫓 Turkey Taco Flatbread Melts

These crispy flatbread melts are a fun twist on taco night and come together fast on busy evenings. Lean ground turkey, melted cheese, fresh toppings, and warm flatbread create a dinner that feels a little different from standard tacos—but still has the familiar flavors kids love.

They’re easy to customize for picky eaters, and using turkey instead of beef keeps the meal lighter while still packed with flavor. Pair them with fruit or a simple salad and dinner is done.

🏀 Detroit Stays Alive With Statement Road Win Over Cavaliers

The Detroit Pistons kept their playoff run alive with a commanding 115-94 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night, forcing a Game 7 in the Eastern Conference second-round series.

Detroit controlled the game after taking a 54-41 halftime lead and opened the third quarter with a 12-2 run. Cleveland briefly cut the deficit to six points, but the Pistons answered with another strong stretch to pull away.

Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 21 points and five three-pointers, while Jalen Duren added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Daniss Jenkins scored 15 points, and Paul Reed added 17 off the bench as Detroit’s reserves outscored Cleveland’s bench 48-19.

The Pistons matched the largest Game 6 road victory by a team trailing 3-2 in NBA playoff history, a mark that dates back to 1960. Detroit has now won four elimination games this postseason after previously rallying from a 3-1 deficit against Orlando in the first round.

Detroit’s physical defense disrupted Cleveland throughout the night. The Pistons turned 20 Cavaliers turnovers into 28 points and converted 13 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points.

James Harden scored 23 points for Cleveland, while Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley added 18 each. The Cavaliers suffered their first home loss of the postseason and will now face a decisive Game 7 on Sunday in Detroit.

⚾ Cleveland’s Late Comeback Comes Up Just Short Against Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Reds ended a seven-game road losing streak Friday night, holding off the Cleveland Guardians for a 7-6 victory in the first meeting between the Ohio rivals this season.

Cincinnati looked in control after Matt McLain hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to push the lead to 6-1. McLain finished with three RBIs and later delivered the game-saving defensive play.

The game turned chaotic in the eighth when Reds reliever Graham Ashcraft loaded the bases with walks. Cleveland responded with an RBI single, two bases-loaded walks, and a sacrifice fly from José Ramírez to cut the deficit to 6-5.

The Reds added an insurance run in the ninth on JJ Bleday’s fielder’s choice before Cleveland answered with another run in the bottom half.

With the tying run threatening, McLain made a diving stop on the outfield grass and threw out Travis Bazzana at first base to end the game. Tejay Antone earned his first save since May 2021 after battling through multiple elbow surgeries.

Andrew Abbott earned the win for Cincinnati, extending his scoreless streak to 21 2/3 innings before allowing a solo homer to Rhys Hoskins in the sixth inning.

Elly De La Cruz added an RBI double, while Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee dropped to 0-6 despite another strong outing with limited run support.
