🌡️ Why Many AC Systems Fail During the First Ohio Heat Wave

Many homeowners in Mentor assume their air conditioner simply “gets old” and stops working one summer. In reality, most systems slowly struggle for years before finally breaking down during the first real heat wave.

And surprisingly, the issue is often not the AC unit itself.

Northeast Ohio homes deal with heavy humidity, sudden temperature swings, cottonwood buildup, pollen, pet hair, aging ductwork, and airflow problems that quietly put extra strain on cooling systems.

One of the biggest hidden problems is restricted airflow. Dirty filters, blocked cold-air returns, closed vents, or furniture placed over returns force systems to work much harder than they were designed to.

Another common issue in Mentor homes is attic heat. Many second floors and bonus rooms absorb intense afternoon heat, especially in homes with older insulation or rooms above garages.

Outside, many homeowners do not realize how quickly debris clogs condenser units during spring and early summer. Cottonwood and landscaping buildup reduce the system’s ability to release heat efficiently.

There is also the “first hot week” problem. Systems that seemed fine in May suddenly struggle once temperatures jump into the mid-80s for several straight days.

A few smart checks now can help:

  • replace HVAC filters regularly

  • clear debris around outdoor units

  • keep vents and returns open

  • listen for new buzzing or rattling sounds

  • pay attention to weak airflow upstairs

For many homeowners, comfort problems start long before the AC actually fails.

👉 In the full website version, we break down the hidden cooling mistakes many Northeast Ohio homeowners make, how to test airflow room-by-room, and why some Mentor homes never seem to cool evenly in summer.

⚾ Ramírez Powers Guardians Past Tigers in 8-2 Rout

José Ramírez led the Cleveland Guardians to an 8-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night, finishing with three hits, including a home run and a two-run double.

Slade Cecconi turned in one of his best outings of the season, allowing two runs over 7 1/3 innings as Cleveland won for the sixth time in seven games.

Detroit scored first on Riley Greene’s RBI double in the opening inning, but the Guardians responded with two runs in the third behind an RBI double from Rhys Hoskins. Cleveland added to its lead with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth, highlighted by Ramírez’s two-run double.

Chase DeLauter and Hoskins each drove in two runs for Cleveland, while Angel Martínez extended his hitting streak to seven games. Brayan Rocchio scored three times.

Matt Vierling homered for Detroit, which has now lost 11 of its last 13 games. Tigers starter Framber Valdez allowed four runs in five innings while battling control issues. Ramírez capped the night with his eighth home run of the season in the ninth inning.

🥎 Mentor Lady Cardinals Survive Elyria Rally to Capture Sectional Title

The Mentor Cardinals girls softball team used one explosive inning to extend its postseason run Monday, defeating Elyria 5-4 in a Division I sectional final.

Mentor advances to the district semifinals at Solon on May 20 against the winner of Brunswick and North Canton Hoover.

Elyria pitcher Braylee Beckham dominated early, retiring the first nine Cardinals and striking out seven through three innings. Mentor finally broke through in the fourth.

Peyton Willis started the rally with a double before Allie Dugach drove her in with a single. After Ireland Rainey reached base, Sophia Smalley blasted a three-run homer to left-center, giving Mentor a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals added another run later in the inning when Aubree Colon singled and scored on Savannah Nero’s triple to right field.

Elyria answered with four runs in the fifth. Camille Dunlap drove in two runs with a single, and Hannah Quayle followed with a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Mentor held on the rest of the way to improve to 17-7 this season. The Cardinals continue a strong postseason push after reaching the Division I regional semifinals a year ago and now move one step closer to another tournament run.
