📰 Council Tackles Infrastructure, Growth, and Quality-of-Life Concerns Across the City

MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor City Council’s May 19 meeting opened with something rare in local government: a reminder that neighbors still step up for one another when it matters most.

Two Mentor residents, Yanni Saras and Carl Boore, were formally recognized after rescuing a mother and her 8-year-old daughter from a sinking vehicle in a retention pond near Plaza Boulevard earlier this month. According to officials, the driver suffered a medical emergency before the vehicle entered the water. One man entered the pond to rescue the child and unconscious driver while the other helped bring them to safety and warm them in his garage until emergency crews arrived. The submerged vehicle later showed how little time the victims had.

The meeting then shifted to issues many residents deal with daily.

Council acknowledged frustration over a persistent odor problem affecting one Mentor neighborhood for more than a year. Officials said the EPA and utilities department remain involved, but residents still do not have a clear answer about the source or timeline for resolution.

Residents also received encouraging news about planned FirstEnergy grid upgrades intended to improve reliability in outage-prone neighborhoods. Specific streets are expected to be released soon.

Other updates included a new $60 million Steris manufacturing investment in Mentor, Fire Station No. 3 bids coming in below estimates, Memorial Day ceremony plans, and concerns raised about trash and lighting near Civic Center pickleball and basketball courts.

🐾 How Northeast Ohio Pet Owners Can Avoid Costly Surprises

For many families in Mentor, the cost of owning a pet has quietly changed over the past few years.

It is no longer just food, toys, and annual vet visits.

Across Northeast Ohio, pet owners are facing rising prices for veterinary care, medications, grooming, boarding, and preventative treatments. Emergency veterinary visits that once cost a few hundred dollars can now climb into the thousands — often with little warning.

Veterinarians say one of the biggest financial problems they see is not irresponsible owners. It is unprepared owners.

Many families budget for regular pet expenses but underestimate how quickly costs escalate after an injury, illness, or emergency surgery. And when finances become strained, owners sometimes delay care — which can make treatment more expensive later.

At the same time, experts say many pet owners are overspending in the wrong places.

Luxury toys, trendy supplements, subscription boxes, and premium accessories often deliver far less long-term value than preventative healthcare. Delaying dental cleanings, skipping bloodwork, or avoiding flea, tick, and heartworm prevention to save money now can create much larger medical bills later.

Veterinarians increasingly recommend treating pet healthcare more like household emergency planning.

That does not mean expecting disaster.

It means understanding that pets are living longer, veterinary medicine is more advanced than ever, and costs have changed dramatically in recent years.

For many Northeast Ohio families, the smartest financial move may not be spending more on pets.

It may be spending smarter before a crisis happens.
