📰 Council Questions Timing of Mentor Shoreline Engineering Contract

MENTOR, Ohio — In Tuesday meeting, Mentor City Council delayed action once again on a proposed shoreline protection engineering agreement tied to what could become one of the city’s largest infrastructure projects in years — a potential $30 to $40 million effort aimed at protecting portions of Mentor’s lakefront from ongoing erosion concerns.

During Tuesday night’s council meeting, members debated whether the city should move forward with spending approximately $1.5 million on engineering and professional design services before voters have the opportunity to weigh in on any future funding request or referendum tied to the larger project.

Several council members stressed that protecting the shoreline is important, but questioned the timing of approving expensive engineering work before the public decides whether they support the broader project financially.

Councilman Blake described the proposal as “the cart way out front and the horse still in the stall,” expressing concern that the city could spend millions on engineering plans that may never be used if voters reject future funding measures.

Supporters of the project argue shoreline erosion remains a serious long-term issue for Mentor and that planning work must begin now in order to secure future protections along vulnerable sections of the lakefront.

Council voted to move the ordinance to a third reading in two weeks rather than taking final action Tuesday night.

📰 Hometown History: Roosevelt Found Rest and Reflection in Mentor

MENTOR, Ohio — During his demanding 1912 presidential campaign, Theodore Roosevelt made a brief stop in Mentor for rest and reflection. The former president was traveling the country promoting his newly formed Progressive “Bull Moose” Party, delivering speeches at a relentless pace as his campaign train crossed the nation.

After appearances in Cleveland, Roosevelt arrived in Mentor on May 18 and stayed at the country home of James Rudolph Garfield, son of President James A. Garfield. The next day provided a rare break from the hectic campaign schedule.

Roosevelt attended Sunday services at Mentor Methodist Church with the Garfield family, where Rev. B. B. Schaffner delivered the sermon. Contemporary reports noted that Roosevelt appeared refreshed by Mentor’s quiet countryside after weeks of nonstop travel and public appearances.

He spent the afternoon privately with the Garfields before resuming his campaign later that evening. His train departed Mentor for Cleveland and then continued overnight to Marietta, where another full day of speeches awaited. Additional stops across Ohio included Caldwell, Cambridge, Zanesville, Newark, Coshocton, Newcomerstown and Dennison.

Although Roosevelt’s 1912 presidential bid was unsuccessful, it became the most successful third-party campaign in American history. His visit remains a memorable piece of Mentor’s local history. See the 1912 article from the Plain Dealer.

🏀 Josh Hart Powers Knicks Past Cavaliers for 2-0 Series Lead

The New York Knicks moved two wins away from their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999 with a 109-93 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals at Madison Square Garden.

Josh Hart led the way with a playoff career-high 26 points, including five 3-pointers, while Jalen Brunson added 19 points and a playoff-best 14 assists. Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Mikal Bridges scored 19 as New York extended its postseason winning streak to nine games.

After rallying late in Game 1, the Knicks took control much earlier this time. Tied early in the third quarter, New York exploded on an 18-0 run fueled by Brunson’s playmaking and Hart’s outside shooting to build a commanding lead.

Cleveland got 26 points from Donovan Mitchell and 18 from James Harden but struggled at the free-throw line and never fully recovered from the Knicks’ third-quarter surge.

The series now shifts to Cleveland for Game 3 on Saturday, with the Cavaliers trailing 2-0 once again this postseason.
