📰 Mentor Wrestling Community Grieves Unexpected Loss of Coach Starkey

Coach Starkey

MENTOR, Ohio — The Mentor community is mourning the unexpected death of Mentor High School boys wrestling coach Starkey, whose passing was announced by the school’s wrestling program.

In a heartfelt social media tribute, the team described Starkey as a coach who impacted countless young athletes throughout their lives, serving as a mentor, role model, and steady source of encouragement both on and off the mat. The message reflected the deep grief felt throughout the wrestling community and beyond.

The wrestling program noted that Starkey’s influence stretched far beyond competition, helping guide students from childhood into adulthood through support, humor, leadership, and advice.

As news of his death spread, community members were encouraged to come together once again in support of the Starkey family during the difficult time. The loss has deeply affected Mentor’s wrestling community, which continues to rally around one another in remembrance of their coach.

📰 New Mentor Businesses Approved, Larger Questions Remain on Bolton Property

MENTOR, Ohio — The Mentor Planning Commission handled a wide range of projects Thursday night — from new healthcare services and restaurant improvements to a lengthy discussion about the future of the Bolton property development near Johnnycake Ridge and Center Street.

Among the approvals was a new membership-based direct primary care medical clinic planned for MatchWorks on Station Street. The clinic aims to improve access to primary care services in Mentor and Lake County. Commissioners also approved a therapy-related medical office on Tyler Boulevard, though concerns were raised about fire safety, open stairwells, and building occupancy requirements that may need review during re-occupancy inspections.

A new restaurant taking over the former Melt Bar & Grilled location received approval to continue using the existing outdoor patio space.

The most significant discussion centered on revised plans for the large Bolton property development. Developers reduced the number of rental units from previous proposals and increased for-sale housing, while commissioners pushed for assurances about long-term property maintenance, future subdivision restrictions, emergency access, traffic flow, and public trail connectivity.

Commissioners repeatedly emphasized that residents are paying close attention to how this development could shape traffic patterns, neighborhood character, public access, and future growth in Mentor for decades to come.

The website version dives much deeper into the biggest issues discussed Thursday night — including long-term concerns about rental housing, future traffic flow, public trail access, emergency connectivity, and how the massive Bolton property development could reshape this part of Mentor for decades to come.

A High-Energy Family Hotspot + A Peaceful Waterfront Escape

Summer travel season continues to evolve, and Northeast Ohio families are increasingly choosing vacations that either deliver nonstop excitement—or complete relaxation. This week’s Travel Sunday feature highlights two destinations trending in very different ways with Ohio travelers planning summer getaways.

🎡 Wisconsin Dells

If your family wants action-packed days and nonstop entertainment, Wisconsin Dells has quietly become one of the Midwest’s biggest family vacation hotspots. Often called the “Waterpark Capital of the World,” the area combines massive indoor and outdoor waterparks with go-karts, zip lines, amusement attractions, boat tours, arcades, and family resorts.

Many Northeast Ohio families are discovering that Wisconsin Dells offers the excitement of a major destination vacation without needing airfare or expensive theme park tickets. It’s especially popular for multi-generational trips because there’s something for every age group.

Why Ohio families love it: Huge family entertainment options, waterparks, road-trip accessibility, and strong overall value.

🌅 Saugatuck

For travelers looking to slow down and recharge, Saugatuck is becoming one of the Great Lakes region’s most talked-about waterfront escapes. Located along Lake Michigan, this charming beach town offers scenic dunes, art galleries, boutique shopping, casual dining, and relaxing lake views.

Families enjoy spending the day at the beach, exploring the downtown area, or taking boat cruises along the waterfront. Unlike some larger beach destinations, Saugatuck offers a much quieter and more laid-back atmosphere.

Why Ohio families love it: Peaceful lakefront scenery, small-town charm, relaxing beaches, and an easy Midwest getaway feel.

💡 Travel Tip of the Week

If you’re driving to popular summer destinations, leaving early in the morning can dramatically reduce traffic and make the trip feel much shorter—especially on Saturdays.

🌞 Coming Next Sunday

We’ll feature two more trending summer destinations—including one cool-weather mountain escape and one sunny coastal destination that families from Northeast Ohio are increasingly booking for late-summer vacations.

🏀 Knicks Continue Playoff Surge With Win Over Cleveland

The Cleveland Cavaliers are now on the brink of elimination after falling to the New York Knicks 121-108 in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday night at Rocket Arena.

Cleveland trails the series 3-0 and must win Monday night to avoid a sweep and keep its season alive.

Evan Mobley led the Cavaliers with 24 points, while Donovan Mitchell added 23 and James Harden scored 19. Cleveland struggled from three-point range, hitting just 12 of 41 attempts, and could not match New York’s pace or efficiency.

The Knicks shot nearly 56% from the field and controlled the game from the opening minutes. Jalen Brunson scored 30 points, with Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby combining for 43 more as New York extended its playoff winning streak to 10 games.

Cleveland briefly erased a first-half deficit to tie the game at 50, but New York answered with a strong run before halftime and never surrendered control. The Cavaliers cut into the lead several times in the second half, but three quick fourth-quarter three-pointers from Landry Shamet sealed the outcome.

Game 4 is set for Monday night in Cleveland.

⚾ Guardians’ Seven-Game Win Streak Ends in Shutout Loss to Phillies

The Cleveland Guardians saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end Saturday night with a 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in a rain-delayed matchup at Citizens Bank Park.

Cleveland managed just three hits against Zack Wheeler and the Phillies pitching staff. The Guardians had only 3 hits in the game and did not advance a runner to third base until the ninth inning as Wheeler struck out six over six scoreless innings.

Bryson Stott delivered the key hit for Philadelphia with a two-run single in the fourth inning. Slade Cecconi allowed three runs over five-plus innings for Cleveland.

Despite the loss, the Guardians will look to bounce back in Sunday’s series finale behind left-hander Parker Messick. The game has a start time of 1:35pm.

⚾ Captains Rally Past Lugnuts 9-3 for Fourth Series Win

The Lake County Captains continued their strong series against the Lansing Lugnuts with a 9-3 victory Saturday night, earning their fourth win in five games.

Lansing took an early 3-1 lead behind Devin Taylor’s two-run single in the first inning and another run in the third.

Lake County responded quickly as Esteban González hit a solo home run in the third before the Captains took control with a three-run inning to move ahead 4-3.

The Captains’ pitching staff shut down Lansing the rest of the way while the offense added insurance runs late.

Jace LaViolette sealed the win in the seventh inning with a three-run homer to right-center field that stretched the lead to 9-3. Tommy Hawke also contributed with a triple during the comeback effort.
