🛟 Mentor Police commend quick-thinking rescuers after terrifying pond crash

City of Mentor

MENTOR, Ohio — We previously covered the dramatic rescue itself, but new details — including recognition for a second man involved — emerged this week during a Mentor City Council meeting.

Two Mentor residents were officially recognized for helping save a mother and her 8-year-old daughter after a vehicle crashed into a retention pond earlier this month.

At the May 19 council meeting, Mentor Police Chief Ken Gunsch commended Yianni Sarris and Karl Bohr for their actions following the May 1 crash near Plaza Boulevard and Johnnycake Ridge Road.

Police say a 42-year-old woman suffered a sudden medical emergency while driving. Her vehicle crossed through the intersection, struck a street sign and fence, traveled through a backyard in the Brookview Reserve Development, and entered a retention pond.

As the vehicle began sinking, Sarris entered the water and pulled the child from the backseat before returning to rescue the unconscious driver. Bohr assisted the girl on shore and brought both victims into his garage, providing blankets and heat while first responders arrived.

Chief Gunsch noted temperatures were around 50 degrees that evening. By the time a tow truck arrived, the vehicle was completely submerged.

Police credited both men’s quick actions with preventing a far more tragic outcome. The pair received a standing ovation from City Council members and residents in attendance.

📰 Mentor’s Tia Geisler prepares for second shot at Scripps National Spelling Bee title

MENTOR, Ohio — At Shore Middle School in Mentor, spelling practice has become part of daily life for 13-year-old Tia Geisler.

The eighth grader is heading to Washington, D.C., this week to compete in the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee — her second appearance on the national stage after qualifying once before at just 10 years old.

Tia said she’s feeling “a mix of everything” ahead of the competition, but also ready for the challenge.

Preparation has meant one to two hours of studying each day using spelling apps, root words, dictionaries and the official “Words of the Champions” guide. Competitors must be ready for nearly anything found in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Her father, Regis Geisler, has helped keep her motivated throughout the process — including honoring a family promise. If Tia qualified for nationals again, she could finally get a cat.

The future feline already has a name: Pop-Tart.

Outside of spelling, Tia stays busy with choir, theater club, concert band, fast-pitch softball and flag football. Still, this week the spotlight belongs to spelling.

And if she wins the national title?

Her first purchase would be simple: “a two-liter bottle of Dr Pepper.”

Mentor residents will be cheering her on as she competes against the nation’s top young spellers.

You’re Not Lazy — Your Nervous System Might Just Be Fried

A lot of people in Mentor aren’t physically exhausted anymore.

They’re mentally overloaded.

There’s a difference.

Modern life keeps the brain running almost nonstop — work notifications, constant errands, packed schedules, endless scrolling, background stress, sports practices, finances, news alerts, and a phone that never really lets the day end.

The result is something many people know well:
You feel exhausted all day… but strangely restless once you finally get into bed.

That’s because your body and nervous system may never fully shifted out of “go mode.”

Many adults today aren’t lacking sleep opportunity as much as they’re lacking transition time. We go directly from stimulation to trying to sleep — often within minutes.

And for a lot of people, nighttime becomes the only quiet personal time they have all day. So they stay awake longer than they intended, scrolling or watching TV, even while tired.

Not because they’re irresponsible.
Because their brain is trying to reclaim downtime.

One helpful shift is creating a short buffer between the day and bedtime.

Not a perfect wellness routine. Just a calmer landing strip.

That might mean:

  • lowering lights

  • putting the phone down earlier

  • stretching for 10 minutes

  • taking a shower

  • listening to music

  • sitting quietly without more input

Sometimes better sleep starts before your head hits the pillow.

👉🏻 There’s also a reason many people feel “tired but wired” at night — and it may have more to do with overstimulation than insomnia. See the full article on our website.

⚾ Cleveland Can’t Climb Out of Early Hole in Loss to Washington

The Guardians found themselves playing from behind early again Tuesday night, and this time the comeback never fully materialized.

Washington’s James Wood continued his breakout season with a towering two-run homer as the Nationals defeated Cleveland 6-3 at Progressive Field. The loss marked Cleveland’s second straight against Washington after entering the series as one of baseball’s hottest teams.

The game turned quickly in the second inning. Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz delivered a two-run single before Wood launched his 15th home run of the season deep into right field to give Washington a 4-0 lead.

Guardians starter Joey Cantillo struggled through one of his shortest outings of the year, allowing four runs in just two innings while battling command issues.

José Ramírez drove in Steven Kwan with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and rookie Travis Bazzana added a two-run single in the ninth inning to give the crowd a late spark. Still, the early damage proved too much to overcome.

One bright spot came defensively when Daniel Schneemann robbed Curtis Mead of a home run with a leaping catch at the wall in center field.

The Guardians will try to avoid a sweep Wednesday afternoon when Gavin Williams takes the mound against veteran right-hander Miles Mikolas.

⚾ Lake Catholic’s season ends after wild district semifinal against Perry

Lake Catholic looked poised to survive and advance Tuesday night.

Instead, Perry delivered one final rally.

The Cougars saw their season end May 26 in a heartbreaking 12-11 extra-inning loss to Perry in a Division IV district semifinal after the Pirates scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Lake Catholic appeared in control after erupting for five runs in the top of the eighth to take its first lead of the game.

Tyler Hribar, Micah Nyetrae and Josh Howman each drove in runs during the inning as the Cougars built an 11-6 advantage and moved within three outs of the district final.

But Perry answered with patience at the plate, taking advantage of walks, an error and a hit batter before Chase Sivon delivered the game-winning hit with two outs and the bases loaded.

The dramatic ending spoiled an otherwise resilient effort from Lake Catholic, which battled back multiple times throughout the night.

Patrick Martin tied the game in the fourth inning with an RBI single, Brayden Mann added another run-scoring hit in the fifth and Quinn Stayer later delivered a two-run single to even the score at 6-6.

Despite trailing for much of regulation, the Cougars consistently responded offensively and nearly completed the comeback victory.

Instead, Perry advanced while Lake Catholic was left one inning short of continuing its postseason run.
