🎸 Mentor Rocks Returns for Its 10th Summer at the Amp

MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor Rocks is coming back for another big summer — and this one marks the concert series’ 10th season at the Mentor Civic Amphitheater.

The free weekly series returns Tuesday evenings beginning June 2, bringing live music, food trucks, lawn seating, and a festival-like atmosphere back to the Amp. The 2026 lineup includes tribute acts across rock, pop, and country, along with national recording artists Phillip Phillips and Night Ranger. A rising country artist is also expected to be announced later.

Phillip Phillips, best known for “Home” after winning American Idol in 2012, is scheduled for June 30. Night Ranger, known for hits including “Sister Christian,” performs July 14, with Madison’s Lily Heidinger opening at 6 p.m. before Night Ranger at 7:30 p.m.

Most shows begin at 7 p.m. at the Mentor Civic Amphitheater, 8600 Munson Road. Admission and parking are free. Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged.

One important change this year: no coolers. Outside food and non-alcoholic drinks are still allowed, but they must be hand-carried. Outside alcohol, glass containers, food deliveries, and pets are not permitted.

With more than 132,000 attendees in 2025, Mentor Rocks remains one of Northeast Ohio’s signature summer traditions.

💰 Mentor Schools Weigh Voucher Lawsuit and Another Levy After Recent Defeats

MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor Schools Weigh Voucher Lawsuit and Another Levy After Recent Defeats

The Mentor School Board took its first formal steps this week toward two major decisions that could shape the district’s financial future: joining a statewide lawsuit challenging Ohio’s private school voucher program and potentially placing another levy before voters this fall.

During a special meeting Tuesday, board members agreed to prepare resolutions for June consideration. If approved, Mentor could join more than 300 Ohio school districts involved in the “Vouchers Hurt Ohio” lawsuit while also continuing discussions about a possible November levy.

The conversation comes after two recent levy defeats and growing concerns about district finances.

Supporters of the lawsuit argue Ohio’s expanding voucher program redirects public money to private schools and has moved far beyond its original purpose of helping students leave struggling districts. Critics say vouchers provide families with additional educational choices.

Board members also raised questions about accountability standards for private schools receiving public voucher funding and discussed whether public districts would directly benefit if the lawsuit succeeds.

The discussion included state Rep. Daniel Troy, who expressed support for districts pursuing legal action if they choose. State Sen. Jerry Cirino and Rep. Jamie Callender were invited but did not attend.

No final decisions were made Tuesday. Both resolutions are expected to return for board consideration in June, when residents may get a clearer picture of the district’s next steps on funding and school finance.

💧 Mentor Fire Department Launches June Hydrant Flushing Program

MENTOR, Ohio — The Mentor Fire Department will conduct its annual hydrant flushing program throughout June as part of ongoing efforts to maintain the city’s water infrastructure and fire protection capabilities.

The maintenance removes sediment and mineral buildup that can collect inside water mains over time. Flushing the system helps improve water quality, confirm hydrants are ready for emergency use, and support the reliability of Mentor’s water distribution network.

Residents and businesses may notice temporary changes in water service while flushing is underway, including discolored or cloudy water and brief reductions in water pressure. Officials note that these effects are expected and typically clear up quickly.

Anyone experiencing discolored water should run cold water taps until the water becomes clear. Residents are also advised to avoid using hot water during this period to prevent sediment from entering water heaters. Before drinking, cooking, washing, or doing laundry, water should be checked to ensure it has returned to normal clarity, as sediment can stain clothing.

City officials thanked residents for their cooperation, noting that the annual program helps keep Mentor’s water system dependable and prepared for emergency response needs.

⚾ Mentor's Season Ends with 2-1 Tournament Loss to St. Edward

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Mentor Cardinals came up just short in a hard-fought Division I state tournament matchup Wednesday, falling 2-1 to St. Edward at John Carroll University.

Mentor battled throughout the low-scoring contest and kept the game within reach until the final out, but the Cardinals were unable to overcome a narrow deficit as their postseason run came to an end.

The Cardinals' pitching and defense helped limit St. Edward's opportunities, turning the game into a tense battle where every run proved critical. Despite the effort, Mentor could not generate enough offense to erase the one-run difference.

The loss marked Mentor's sixth consecutive defeat and dropped the Cardinals' final record to 7-17. St. Edward improved to 16-9 and advanced in the 2026 OHSAA Division I Baseball State Championships.

While the season concluded with a disappointing result, Mentor showed resilience in a closely contested playoff game against one of Northeast Ohio's perennial baseball powers.

⚾ Late Walks Fuel Lake County Rally as Captains Defeat Beloit

BELOIT, WI — The Lake County Captains used a chaotic eighth inning to earn a 4-2 victory over the Beloit Sky Carp on May 28.

Tied 1-1 entering the eighth, Lake County loaded the bases with two outs and took advantage of Beloit’s control problems. Two walks forced in runs, and a wild pitch brought home another, giving the Captains a 4-1 lead. The inning included five walks and a hit batter, helping Lake County break the tie despite collecting only four hits all game.

Beloit threatened in the ninth when Cam Cannarella led off with a triple and later scored on a groundout to make it 4-2. The Sky Carp, however, could not add another run.

Lake County’s first run came in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Maick Collado.

The Captains finished with four singles, struck out 16 times, drew eight walks, went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and left 10 runners on base… and got the W.

Jackson Humphries started and threw four scoreless innings, striking out seven. Michael Kennedy entered in the fifth and finished the game to earn the win and improve to 4-2.

⛳ Concord Golfer Scores Hole-in-One at Lost Nation

CONCORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A Concord Township golfer recently achieved one of the game's rarest feats.

Paul Graehling scored a hole-in-one on the 130-yard third hole at Lost Nation Golf Course. Using an 8-iron, Graehling sent his tee shot directly into the cup for the ace.

A hole-in-one is a memorable accomplishment for any golfer, making Graehling’s perfect shot a moment he is unlikely to forget.

Congratulations to Paul on an impressive achievement. ⛳🏌️‍♂️
