🚣🏻 Public Invited to Help Shape the Future of Mentor Marsh

Mentor Marsh
MENTOR, Ohio — Residents have an opportunity to help guide the future of one of Northeast Ohio's most important natural areas.
The Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve is the focus of a new Master Plan aimed at improving accessibility, infrastructure, education, and the overall visitor experience while protecting the marsh's ecological value.
The project is being led by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in partnership with the City of Mentor and Lake County. Planning and design firm SmithGroup has been hired to develop the plan.
According to project organizers, the Master Plan will create a long-term framework for future improvements and investments across the preserve.
Key goals include:
• Improving accessibility and navigation
• Addressing infrastructure needs
• Exploring a future nature center
• Supporting year-round recreation and ecotourism
• Protecting natural resources
• Strengthening community engagement
Officials say the current visitor experience lacks a unified framework, making this planning effort an opportunity to create a clearer vision for the preserve's future.
Residents can provide feedback through a public survey that will help guide the Master Plan. The survey is open through July 3, 2026, and takes less than five minutes to complete.

🥇 Mentor Teen’s Hard Work Pays Off With National Welding Championship
MENTOR, Ohio — A Mentor High School senior is bringing home national recognition after winning a major welding competition in Wyoming.
Seventeen-year-old Aidan Pecka recently earned first place at the Western Welding Academy competition in Gillette, Wyoming, outperforming roughly 400 students from across multiple states. The victory also came with a scholarship and recognition among some of the country's top young welders.
Pecka said hearing his name announced as the winner was a moment he will never forget.
The achievement follows years of dedication to learning the trade. Interested in welding since the start of high school, Pecka enrolled in Lakeland Community College’s welding program during his junior year while continuing classes at Mentor High School.
According to his father, Ed Pecka, Aidan's days often started before sunrise. He would weld at Lakeland before school, attend classes at Mentor High, then return to Lakeland for additional training that sometimes stretched into the evening.
Pecka credits Lakeland instructors Ryan Eubank, Paul McMillan, and Mathew Nonato for helping prepare him for both competition and career opportunities.
The momentum hasn’t stopped. Just days after winning in Wyoming, Pecka captured first place at the SkillsUSA Ohio state competition and is now preparing for the SkillsUSA National Championships in Atlanta.
After graduating from Mentor High on May 31, Pecka plans to pursue a career in the skilled trades, potentially through a pipefitters union or as a boilermaker.
For Mentor residents, his success is another reminder of the opportunities available through career and technical education programs close to home.

⚾ Martínez Delivers at Plate and in Field as Guardians Edge Red Sox 4-3
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Guardians jumped on Boston early and made the lead stand up in a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox on Friday night at Progressive Field.
Angel Martínez sparked the effort on both sides of the ball. He drove in a run during Cleveland’s four-run first inning and later made a key defensive play to stop a Boston scoring threat.
The Guardians strung together six straight singles in the opening inning, with RBI hits from Rhys Hoskins and Martínez helping build a 4-0 advantage. Patrick Bailey added a sacrifice fly as Cleveland took control early.
Martínez also came through defensively in the second inning, throwing out a runner at the plate after Boston tried to capitalize on a ball that got past shortstop Brayan Rocchio.
Chase DeLauter and Kyle Manzardo each collected two hits, providing a boost to the offense.
Boston trimmed the deficit in the fifth inning with three runs, including an RBI single by Marcelo Mayer, an RBI double from Caleb Durbin, and a sacrifice fly by Jarren Duran. However, Cleveland’s bullpen kept the Red Sox off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Colin Holderman earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Starter Slade Cecconi allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings, and Cade Smith recorded his MLB-leading 20th save.
The Guardians’ early offensive outburst proved to be enough as they held off the late push and secured another home victory.
