🚨 Two Cyclists Hurt, Suspect Arrested After Dramatic Daylong Standoff in Mentor
Suspect Taken Into Custody After Lengthy Mentor Standoff Following Bicycle Crash
MENTOR HEADLANDS, Ohio — A man was taken into custody Wednesday evening after an hourslong standoff with law enforcement in Mentor that began after a hit-and-run crash involving two bicyclists.
According to Mentor police and fire officials, the incident started around 11:09 a.m. on Headlands Road when an SUV struck two cyclists. Emergency crews arrived to find both victims injured, while the driver had already fled the scene.
Investigators determined the driver went to a residence on Orchard Road and barricaded himself inside. Police established a security perimeter, and negotiators spent several hours attempting to secure a peaceful surrender.
As the standoff stretched into the evening, SWAT officers breached windows and deployed gas after repeated efforts to communicate with the suspect were unsuccessful.
Around 6:45 p.m., officers detained the man and removed him from the home, ending the standoff. Officials said he was evaluated by paramedics before being formally arrested.
The two bicyclists suffered injuries in the crash. One man, believed to be in his 60s, was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mentor Hospital with injuries that included a possible facial fracture. The second cyclist, a 72-year-old man, suffered a severe leg injury and possible fracture before being airlifted to Cleveland Clinic’s main campus for treatment.
Authorities have not released the identities of the suspect or the injured bicyclists. The investigation remains ongoing.

📰 Mentor Council Advances Fire Station 3, Lagoon Shoreline Design

MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor City Council moved several major local projects forward at its June 2 meeting, including the construction of the new Fire Station 3 and continued design work for shoreline protection at Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve.
Council approved a construction contract with Infinity Construction Company for the new Fire Station 3 at 8091 Plaza Boulevard. The contract amount is not to exceed $12,596,000, with work expected to be completed within 420 days of the agreement’s execution.
Council also approved a contract with Quality Control Inspection Inc. to serve as the resident project representative for the fire station project. City officials said the outside firm will help monitor construction progress, review pay applications, assist with change orders and help keep the project on schedule and within budget.
The fire station discussion included questions about why an outside firm was needed, whether city inspectors could handle the role, and what penalties apply if construction runs late. Officials said the construction contract includes a $500-per-day penalty beyond the required timeline.
Council also approved a professional services agreement with SmithGroup for engineering and design work tied to the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve shoreline protection plan. Several council members raised concerns about the project’s possible long-term cost, with city officials saying they expect any major future expenditure to go before voters.
Later in the meeting, council members also discussed the city’s new cooler restrictions at Mentor Rocks concerts.

Summer Heat Can Be Tough on Dogs. Here's What to Watch For
As temperatures climb across Northeast Ohio, many dogs are eager to spend more time outside. But while a sunny afternoon may feel manageable to us, dogs can overheat much faster than people realize.
Heat stress can develop quickly, especially during humid weather. Since dogs don't sweat the way humans do, they rely primarily on panting to cool themselves. When temperatures and humidity rise together, that cooling process becomes less effective.
Some common warning signs include excessive panting, heavy drooling, lethargy, difficulty walking, vomiting, or unusually bright red gums. In more serious cases, a dog may become disoriented or collapse.
One of the simplest ways to reduce risk is to adjust walk times. Early mornings and later evenings are typically safer than midday, when pavement and air temperatures are at their highest. If the pavement feels too hot for your hand after a few seconds, it's likely too hot for your dog's paws.
Fresh water should always be available, whether you're at home, in the backyard, or heading to a local park. Portable water bowls can make a big difference during outings.
Summer is one of the best times to enjoy Northeast Ohio's parks, trails, and neighborhoods with your dog. A few simple precautions can help keep those adventures safe and comfortable all season long.
👉🏻 Want to know exactly when it's too hot for a walk and what to do if your dog shows signs of overheating? We've put together a deeper guide on summer dog safety for Northeast Ohio pet owners.

⚾ Ramírez Powers Guardians Past Yankees as Cleveland Stays Hot
NEW YORK, NY — The Cleveland Guardians defeated the New York Yankees 5-4 on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, powered by another strong performance from José Ramírez.
Ramírez collected three hits for the second straight game, homered, stole his 21st base and scored three runs. Kyle Manzardo and Rhys Hoskins also connected for home runs, with Hoskins driving in three runs.
The victory improved Cleveland’s road record to 10-1 since May 6 and marked its 15th win in the last 20 games. The Guardians will look to complete a three-game sweep Thursday.
Gavin Williams improved to 9-3 after allowing three runs over 5⅓ innings, while Cade Smith recorded his major league-leading 21st save.
The Yankees played without Aaron Judge for a second consecutive game as he continues to undergo evaluation for a rib injury. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and José Caballero homered for New York.
Gerrit Cole surrendered four runs over 5⅓ innings in his third start since returning from elbow surgery.
Cleveland also received encouraging news as injured shortstop Gabriel Arias is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.

⚾ Captains Overcome Rough First Inning With Huge Night in Fort Wayne
FORT WAYNE, IN — The Lake County Captains had a rough start Wednesday night in Fort Wayne. Then they made sure it did not define the game.
After falling behind 6-0 in the first inning, Lake County stormed back for a 17-7 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps, using a steady wave of offense and a strong long-relief outing from Jogly García.
Starting pitcher Jervis Alfaro lasted just one-third of an inning, allowing six earned runs as Fort Wayne jumped ahead early. But García settled the game quickly, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts to give the Captains’ lineup time to take over.
And take over it did.
Lake County scored four runs in the second, then grabbed the lead in the fourth on a three-run homer from Jace LaViolette. Bennett Thompson followed with a two-run shot later in the inning, putting the Captains ahead 9-6.
The offense kept rolling from there. Thompson added a two-run triple in the sixth and a solo homer in the ninth. Jeffrey Mercedes launched a three-run homer in the eighth, and LaViolette added a two-run double.
By the end, Lake County had 17 runs on 15 hits. Amazing for a team that could have let the first inning spiral, this was a pretty loud response.
