⭐ One Woman Restored a Forgotten Veterans Cemetery
MENTOR, Ohio — A small cemetery along Chardon Road in Willoughby Hills — holding the graves of roughly 70 people, including Revolutionary War and Civil War veterans — has been restored after three years of community effort led by Linda J. O'Brien. O'Brien, founder of Liberty Camp USA, first showed up with cleaning solution and a scrub brush. After spending hours on just two headstones, she called in Stonehugger Cemetery Restoration. The estimated cost: $50,000. She found her fundraising partner at a dinner — spotting a member of the Men of Honor Foundation across the room at the exact moment she needed one. Chairman Edward Jones visited the site and called the experience "sobering." The group hosted raffles and rallied donors to make the project happen. Bob Sparent, owner of Shannon Fence and a childhood friend of a Men of Honor member, donated the new fencing free of charge — designed to replicate period-appropriate wrought iron. He also arranged a new sign sourced from a Middlefield fabricator. The public unveiling is set for June 15, timed to America's 250th birthday. The ceremony will include the installation of a new V.A.-provided headstone for Edward Halston, the Revolutionary War soldier whose grave first set O'Brien on this path. The $50,000 fundraising goal hasn't been fully reached. Donations are still being accepted through the Men of Honor Foundation.

🫧 Lake County Students Clean Erie Beaches on Their Own Time
MENTOR, Ohio — More than 40 Lake County student leaders gave up a couple of days of summer break this June to clean up two of the area's most popular Lake Erie beaches — and the effort was about more than just picking up trash. The second annual Lake County Beach Cleanups, organized by ESC Western Reserve, brought students from districts across the county to Headlands Beach on June 2 and Fairport Harbor Beach on June 4. The events are part of ESCWR's work under the Drug-Free Communities Grant, which funds substance use prevention and youth engagement across Lake County. While collecting litter and debris, students also documented drug-, tobacco-, and alcohol-related waste found along the shoreline — data that feeds into a broader effort to track substance use patterns and improve community safety. Participants earned community service hours and came away with hands-on experience in environmental stewardship and civic responsibility. The cleanups were organized by Christine Henninger, ESCWR's Integrated Student Supports and Wellness Services coordinator. ESCWR Superintendent Jennifer Felker and community partners including Ron Graham of the Lake County Health Department, Pat Hengst of the Lake County Narcotics Agency, and G-Licious Pizza also supported the effort. Hengst was on-site at Headlands on June 2.

🚨 Body Camera Footage Released from Tuesday’s Mentor Standoff
MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor police have released body camera footage that sheds new light on last week's cyclist attacks on Headlands Road and the hours-long standoff that followed at a nearby home.
The footage, released after Local Buzz's earlier coverage, includes statements from the two injured cyclists and additional details about the police response. Michael Leppelmeier, 42, faces charges of aggravated vehicle assault, felonious assault, and robbery, with additional charges pending. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.
Police say the incident began just after 11 a.m. when a white SUV struck two cyclists in separate encounters along Headlands Road. A 68-year-old Mentor man told officers the driver later struck him in the face, threw his bicycle into a pond, and took his phone. A second cyclist, a 72-year-old Mentor man, said the SUV crossed the center line and hit him head-on. Both suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The newly released footage also shows part of the standoff after officers located the suspect at his Orchard Road home. Police say Leppelmeier later emerged carrying a knife before retreating back inside. Mentor's SWAT team eventually took him into custody shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Hidden Gems: Two Summer Destinations Ohio Travelers Are Discovering
As we wrap up our Where Northeast Ohio Is Going This Summer series, we're featuring two destinations that may not be household vacation names—but are quickly winning over travelers looking for something different.
🌊 Duluth, Minnesota sits along the shores of Lake Superior and offers stunning waterfront scenery, hiking trails, waterfalls, and a unique Great Lakes experience. Many visitors are surprised by how much the landscape resembles an ocean coastline. Families love Canal Park, scenic drives, and the cooler summer temperatures.
🌳 Greenville, South Carolina has quietly become one of the South's most popular getaway destinations. Its walkable downtown, impressive restaurant scene, beautiful parks, and nearby mountain scenery make it ideal for long weekends or extended stays. Falls Park on the Reedy is a must-see attraction right in the heart of downtown.
Both destinations offer something many travelers are seeking this year: memorable experiences without the crowds found at larger tourist hotspots.
Travel Tip: Late summer and early fall often bring lower lodging prices, fewer crowds, and some of the best weather of the year.
Thank you for following along with our Travel Sunday series. Wherever your summer adventures take you, we hope they're memorable. See the in-depth article on our website.

⚾ Bibee Finally Wins One, Guardians Blank Rangers 6-0
ARLINGTON, Texas — Tanner Bibee is in the win column at last. The 27-year-old right-hander earned his first victory of 2026 in his 14th start Saturday, tossing eight dominant innings as the Cleveland Guardians shut out the Texas Rangers 6-0 in Arlington.
Bibee had gone a franchise-record 13 consecutive starts without a win, dating back to Sept. 24, 2025 against Detroit. Saturday, he made it look easy — three hits allowed, three strikeouts, two walks, and just 87 pitches over eight innings.
The offense finally showed up, too. José Ramírez led off the second with a solo homer into the home bullpen, and Brayan Rocchio — batting ninth — launched one off the right-field foul pole in a four-run fifth inning, matching his career high with five home runs on the year. Chase DeLauter, Kyle Manzardo, and Daniel Schneemann added two-out RBI hits in that same inning.
Tim Herrin closed it out with a hitless ninth — Cleveland's third shutout of the season, and all three have come on the road.
Texas starter Jack Leiter (3-5) allowed five runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. The Rangers fall to 31-33.
Starters for Sunday's series finale: Jacob deGrom (4-4, 3.48 ERA) makes his first career start against Cleveland, the only team he's never faced. Joey Cantillo (4-2, 3.92 ERA) goes for the Guardians.

Fort Wayne took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Captains answered in the second with two runs on bases-loaded walks by Jeffrey Mercedes and Tommy Hawke.
Lake County extended its lead to 3-1 in the fifth when Mercedes reached on a fielding error that brought home Aaron Walton. Mercedes added an RBI double in the seventh to make it 4-2.
