🗓️ Mentor Marsh Visioning Process Begins with Public Meeting This Month

MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor residents and nature enthusiasts will have an opportunity to help shape the future of one of Northeast Ohio’s most important natural areas during the first public meeting for the Mentor Marsh Master Plan on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Springbrook Gardens Park, 6776 Heisley Road in Mentor, and will give community members a chance to share ideas and priorities for the long-term vision of the Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve.
As one of Ohio’s most ecologically significant wetlands, Mentor Marsh plays an important role in conservation, environmental education, recreation, and wildlife observation. Yet the preserve faces challenges related to visitor orientation, accessibility, and aging infrastructure that can limit the overall experience.
The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, in partnership with the City of Mentor and Lake County, has hired SmithGroup to develop a comprehensive master plan for the preserve. The plan will provide a roadmap for improving the visitor experience while protecting the marsh’s ecological health.
Key objectives include enhancing accessibility, addressing infrastructure needs, supporting educational opportunities, encouraging year-round use and ecotourism, exploring the potential for a future nature center, and engaging the community throughout the planning process.
Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting and provide feedback that could help guide the future of Mentor Marsh for generations to come.

🍅 Farmers Market Marks More Than Two Decades of Community Connection

Mentor Farmers Market Continues a Longstanding Community Tradition
MENTOR, Ohio — The Mentor Farmers Market returns for the 2026 season on Fridays from June 12 through September 11, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Eleanor B. Garfield Park, 7967 Mentor Ave. For more than 20 years, the market has brought together local farmers, artisans, entertainers, and small businesses in a welcoming outdoor setting.
Founded in 2003 as the Old Village Market, the event operated at several locations before settling at Garfield Park. What began primarily as a produce market has grown into a family-friendly gathering featuring live entertainment, specialty food vendors, artisans, and unique shopping opportunities.
Longtime vendors include Don Anna Farms, Sleeping Dragon Produce, Blade Runner Sharpening Services, Well Preserved Jams and Jellies, and Cecelia's Sweet Delights, while newer participants continue to add variety to the market.
More than 30 vendors typically participate each week, with over 50 attending Fantastic Friday events. Combined with music and community activities, the market remains one of Mentor's favorite summer traditions.
The 2026 Mentor Farmers Market is presented by Cleveland Clinic and supported by several local sponsors. More information is available at www.mentorfarmersmarket.com. cityofmentor.com
🧑🏻⚖️ Mentor Residents Raise Funds for Ohio Voucher Lawsuit
MENTOR, Ohio — A community fundraising effort is covering the cost of Mentor Public Schools joining a statewide legal challenge against Ohio's EdChoice voucher program.
In a 4-1 vote Tuesday, the Mentor School Board approved joining the Vouchers Hurt Ohio lawsuit, which now includes about 300 districts challenging the state's use of public funds to support private school tuition through vouchers.
Board President Maggie Cook said the decision was rooted in concerns about school funding and taxpayer impact, especially after Mentor voters rejected a levy request in May. The district plans to cut $6.6 million from next year's budget, followed by an additional $3.5 million in reductions the following year. Officials are expected to seek voter approval for a lower levy in November.
The decision drew mixed reactions from residents and board members. Opponents questioned the urgency of joining the lawsuit and raised concerns about using public funds for legal action. Board member Rose Ioppolo cast the lone vote against participation.
The district's cost to join the lawsuit is $2 per student each year the case remains active.
In response, Mentor resident and retired educator John Sanford launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover the expense. The effort raised more than $14,000 from nearly 130 donors in about a week, enough to pay the district's initial costs and help offset future expenses related to the case.

Better Pet Living: Understanding Why Cats Seek Out Quiet Spaces
Practical Advice for Northeast Ohio Pet Owners
If you've ever spent 20 minutes searching for your cat only to discover them tucked behind a couch or curled up in the back of a closet, you're not alone.
Hiding is a normal part of feline behavior. Cats often seek out quiet, enclosed spaces where they feel safe and secure. A new visitor, loud noises, home renovations, or even a simple afternoon nap can send them searching for their favorite hiding spot.
But changes in hiding behavior can sometimes signal that something more is going on.
If a normally social cat suddenly starts avoiding family members, skipping meals, or spending significantly more time hidden away, it may be a sign of stress, discomfort, or illness. Cats are known for masking pain, making subtle behavior changes especially important to notice.
Major household changes—including moving, introducing a new pet, or shifting routines—can also contribute to increased hiding.
The key is knowing your cat's normal behavior. Occasional hide-and-seek is usually nothing to worry about. But if hiding becomes unusual for your pet or is paired with other changes in appetite, grooming, or energy levels, a call to your veterinarian may be worthwhile.
After all, understanding our pets often starts with paying attention to the little things.

⚾ Guardians Swept for First Time Since 2025 in 8-4 Loss to Yankees
CLEVELAND, OH — The Cleveland Guardians were swept for the first time in nearly a year Wednesday, falling 8-4 to the New York Yankees at Progressive Field.
The loss ended Cleveland's streak of 31 consecutive series without a sweep, the longest active run in the American League. The Guardians had not been swept since a three-game series against Texas in August 2025.
Cleveland grabbed an early lead when Angel Martínez hit a leadoff home run against Yankees starter Carlos Rodón. New York responded quickly, however, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. driving in three runs, including a two-run triple during a three-run second inning.
Rookie Parker Messick struggled as defensive mistakes hurt the Guardians. Two Cleveland errors contributed to New York's early advantage.
After the Guardians tied the game at 3-3, the Yankees pulled away with three runs in the sixth inning. Trent Grisham tripled after successfully challenging a called third strike and later scored on José Caballero's sacrifice fly. New York added two more runs in the frame to take control.
Rodón settled in after allowing Martínez's homer, giving up just four hits over six innings while improving to 11-5 in his career against Cleveland.
The defeat dropped the Guardians to six losses in their last seven games. Cleveland will try to rebound Friday when it opens a three-game home series against Detroit, with Tanner Bibee scheduled to start.

⚾ Captains' Six-Game Winning Streak Snapped in 8-4 Loss
EASTLAKE, Ohio — The Lake County Captains had their six-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night, falling 8-4 to the West Michigan Whitecaps at Classic Auto Group Park.
Michael Kennedy (5-3) took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs over four innings. The left-hander surrendered three hits, walked four and struck out five. However, West Michigan capitalized against the Lake County bullpen late in the game.
The Whitecaps built a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles from Juan Hernandez and Caleb Shpur.
Lake County got on the board in the fourth when Nolan Schubart delivered an RBI single that scored Jace LaViolette, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
West Michigan answered in the fifth as Jackson Strong doubled home Woody Hadeen to make it 3-1. The game shifted in the seventh when Garrett Pennington blasted a three-run homer, extending the Whitecaps' advantage to 6-1.
The Captains chipped away with a run in the seventh on a Tommy Hawke force out before Schubart brought Lake County within two runs in the eighth with his 13th home run of the season, scoring Aaron Walton to make it 6-4.
Strong sealed the victory in the ninth with a two-run homer as West Michigan handed the Captains an 8-4 defeat. Schubart led Lake County's offense with three RBIs.
