🚨 Emergency Response Winds Down at Lubrizol Plant; All Roads Reopen

All Roads Reopened Following Precautionary Response at Lubrizol Plant in Painesville Township

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — All roads affected by Saturday evening's emergency response near the Lubrizol plant in Painesville Township have reopened, according to the City of Mentor.

In an update posted at 9:53 p.m., city officials announced that all road closures related to the incident had been lifted, restoring normal traffic flow.

The Lake County Emergency Management Agency said it was notified of the situation around 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lubrizol facility at 155 Freedom Road.

Officials reported that an abnormal chemical reaction involving a tank truck delivery prompted the precautionary response. Lubrizol stated that the delivery arrived with temperatures exceeding established handling guidelines.

The company said water was applied to the container to lower its temperature and stressed that there was no indication of any risk to the surrounding community.

Earlier in the evening, authorities closed portions of State Route 2, State Route 44, Heisley Road, Blackbrook Road, Richmond Street, Newell Street, and West Jackson Street while emergency crews monitored the situation.

Fire and EMS personnel from Painesville, Lake County, Wickliffe, Concord, Grand River, and Willoughby assisted at the scene. EMA coordinated with local departments, HAZMAT teams, and Lubrizol representatives throughout the response.

Officials said the closures were implemented out of an abundance of caution and reiterated that the incident did not pose a threat to nearby residents.

With all roads now reopened, authorities continue monitoring conditions at the plant as the response transitions back to normal operations.

🤝 Lifeline Reports Record Demand for Winter Utility Assistance

MENTOR, Ohio — Lifeline, Inc. reported record demand for emergency utility assistance through its Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) Winter Crisis Program, which ran from Nov. 1 through March 31.

During that period, the agency processed applications for 841 low-income households across Lake and Geauga counties, approving 634 requests for assistance with gas, electricity, fuel oil or firewood. In total, $248,000 in federal funding was distributed.

Lifeline officials said rising costs for housing, groceries and fuel, combined with a cold winter, increased the need for assistance.

Although the Winter Crisis Program has ended, eligible residents may still enroll in the Percentage of Income Payment Plan Plus (PIPP Plus), which bases utility payments on household income. Participants who make full, on-time payments can receive credits toward both current charges and outstanding utility debt.

To qualify for PIPP Plus, households must have incomes at or below 175% of the federal poverty level and receive service from a regulated gas or electric provider.

For information about local energy assistance programs or application requirements, contact Lifeline's Energy Assistance Office at 440-350-9160 or visit www.lclifeline.org. Additional statewide information is available at www.energyhelp.ohio.gov or by calling 1-800-282-0880.

📰 Lake County Community Unites to Raise Awareness of Elder Abuse

Lake County Observes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with Community Walk

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Lake County officials, employees and residents gathered June 11 to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, emphasizing the need to protect older adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation.

For the fifth consecutive year, participants wearing purple assembled at the Lake County Department of Job and Family Services before walking through Veterans Park in Painesville Square and concluding at the Lake County Administration Center. The event coincided with a county resolution supporting the observance and the national World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.

Established in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization, the annual campaign seeks to increase awareness and encourage communities to intervene when warning signs appear.

Nationally, an estimated 5 million older adults — about one in 10 seniors — experience abuse, neglect or financial exploitation each year, while research suggests only a small percentage of cases are reported. Ohio Adult Protective Services receives more than 36,000 referrals annually involving adults age 60 and older.

In Lake County, Adult Protective Services responded to more than 1,000 reports of suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation in 2025 and provided protective services to approximately 550 seniors.

Officials encouraged residents to report concerns and remain attentive to vulnerable older adults, stressing that community involvement plays a vital role in preventing mistreatment and ensuring seniors receive the protection and support they deserve.

⚾ José Ramírez Injury Casts Shadow Over Guardians' Victory Against Tigers

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Tarik Skubal returned to the Detroit Tigers' rotation Saturday, but the Cleveland Guardians earned a 3-1 victory in a game defined by both resilience and injury concerns.

The two-time defending Cy Young Award winner made his first start since April 29 after undergoing elbow surgery on May 6 to remove a loose body. Skubal threw 80 pitches over 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four. His biggest mistake came in the third inning, when Daniel Schneemann connected on a two-run homer that proved to be the difference.

Joey Cantillo gave Cleveland five solid innings, allowing one run to improve to 5-3. The Guardians' bullpen followed with four scoreless innings, and Cade Smith recorded the final four outs for his major league-leading 23rd save. Detroit threatened in the ninth but left runners stranded at second and third.

Cleveland's win came with a significant setback as star third baseman José Ramírez fractured the hamate bone in his left hand during a swing in the fifth inning. The injury is expected to sideline Ramírez indefinitely. He previously suffered a hamate fracture in 2019 but returned sooner than anticipated.

The Guardians also saw Chase DeLauter exit with a bruised rib cage after colliding with the outfield wall, while Angel Martinez left after fouling a pitch off his foot. X-rays on Martinez were negative.

The Whitecaps rallied in the eighth against the Captains bullpen. Bryce Rainer opened the inning with a solo home run, Woody Hadeen tied the game with a two-run single, and Jackson Strong followed with a two-run triple to put West Michigan ahead 8-6.
