☘️ A New Irish-Inspired Public House Is Coming to Mentor. Here's What We Know

What We Know About Kearney's Public House, Mentor's Upcoming New Restaurant

MENTOR, Ohio — One of Mentor's most anticipated restaurant projects is still on the way—and city leaders are excited about what it could bring to the community.

Kearney's Public House, an Irish-inspired public house being developed across from Mentor City Hall, received a boost this week when City Council approved a $10,000 economic development grant tied to the project.

But the real story isn't the grant.

It's the restaurant itself.

The project is located at the former Turek Photography property located at 6316 Center Street and represents an estimated $2.5 million investment. Plans include a major renovation and expansion designed to transform the property into a neighborhood gathering place.

The project is being led by Brendan Kearney and partners with extensive experience in Northeast Ohio's restaurant industry, including several successful hospitality ventures throughout Lake County.

City officials estimate the restaurant could create approximately 50 jobs when it opens, with employment potentially growing to as many as 70 positions in the coming years.

While the restaurant had originally hoped to open this month, that timeline has been pushed back and a new opening date has not yet been announced.

For many residents, the excitement comes from more than just another place to eat. City leaders see Kearney's as a significant local investment, a job creator, and a potential gathering place for the community.

👉🏻 Read more about the people behind the project, why Mentor is supporting it, and what makes Kearney's Public House different from a typical restaurant opening.

📰 Mentor Extends Moratorium on New Vape Stores Through 2027

Mentor Extends Pause on New Vape Stores and Head Shops

MENTOR, OH. —- Mentor City Council has voted to extend the city's temporary moratorium on new vape stores and head shops through January 1, 2027.

The moratorium also applies to the expansion of existing businesses within those categories.

City officials said the extension will allow additional time to monitor ongoing state and federal discussions involving certain products commonly sold in those stores. Officials also cited continuing concerns about some products currently available in the marketplace.

The city first adopted the moratorium as a way to pause new development in the category while regulations and industry practices continue to evolve.

According to city officials, there has been little recent activity involving new vape store proposals, but the administration believes maintaining the temporary restriction remains the most prudent approach for now.

Council approved the extension without significant debate.

The moratorium does not affect existing businesses already operating in Mentor but temporarily prevents new vape stores and head shops from opening while the city continues evaluating the issue.

Koda Genovese, Emma Madsen, Brayden Edward Pomnean, and Owen Engle

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Lake County officials recently held their first Military Signing Ceremony at the Lake County Courthouse in Painesville, recognizing local high school graduates who have committed to military service through enlistment or Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs.

The event began with the Pledge of Allegiance and a presentation of the colors by members of local veterans organizations. Opening remarks were delivered by Lake County Commissioner Morris Beverage III and Lake County Veteran Service Center Executive Director Jonathan Warmeling.

Four graduates were honored:

  • Brayden Edward Pomnean of Lake Catholic High School, who committed to the U.S. Navy as a submarine electronics technician navigation specialist.

  • Koda Genovese of Lake Catholic, who committed to the U.S. Marine Corps as a utilities systems technician.

  • Owen Engle of Eastlake North High School, who will attend Duquesne University through Marine Corps ROTC while studying international security studies.

  • Emma Madsen of Lake Catholic, who earned a Navy ROTC scholarship to attend the University of South Carolina and study mechanical engineering.

The ceremony also featured remarks from U.S. Navy Petty Officer Star Lodwick and concluded with the signing of the Lake County High School Military Service Journal.

County leaders said the event recognizes students who have chosen to serve their country and honors the support provided by their families. Following the successful inaugural ceremony, the Lake County Board of Commissioners plans to make the event an annual tradition.

⚾ Captains Split Twin Bill, Finish First Half with Win Despite Playoff Elimination

MIDLAND, Mich. — The Lake County Captains closed out the first half of the Midwest League season with a dramatic 3-2 walk-off victory over the Great Lakes Loons in Game 2 of Thursday’s doubleheader, earning a split at Dow Diamond.

The result came after the Captains had already been eliminated from first-half playoff contention. Dayton secured the Midwest League East Division’s first-half title by winning both games of its doubleheader against Peoria, locking up first place and the division’s playoff berth.

In Game 2, Lake County rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the sixth inning. Jace LaViolette delivered a two-out, two-run double to tie the game before Nolan Schubart ended it in the seventh with a towering solo home run beyond the left-field fence.

The Captains managed just two hits in the nightcap, but both proved decisive. The comeback spoiled a dominant performance by Great Lakes starter Christian Zazueta, who threw five perfect innings with seven strikeouts.

Lake County nearly completed a sweep after rallying from four runs down in Game 1. Welbyn Francisca’s two-run homer capped a four-run seventh inning that tied the game, but the Loons walked it off in the eighth for a 5-4 victory.

The split left the Captains at 37-27 entering the second half of the season, which begins Friday night in Midland.

⚾ Bazzana’s Seventh-Inning Blast Lifts Guardians Past Brewers 4-2

MILWAUKEE, WI — Travis Bazzana broke a tie with a seventh-inning solo home run as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Thursday, avoiding a series sweep after losing the first two games.

David Fry and Kyle Manzardo also homered for Cleveland, while rookie left-hander Parker Messick turned in a strong outing. Messick allowed two runs on four hits over six innings and struck out nine to improve to 7-3. Cade Smith recorded the final four outs for his 24th save.

The Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Gary Sánchez drove in a run with a single. Milwaukee threatened for more, but right fielder Kahlil Watson, making his major league debut, ended the inning with a diving catch.

Fry tied the game with a solo homer in the third, but the Brewers regained the lead in the fourth. Sánchez reached base, advanced on a Blake Perkins double and scored on Cooper Pratt’s sacrifice fly.

Manzardo’s solo shot in the sixth inning pulled Cleveland even at 2-2. An inning later, Bazzana launched a towering homer off reliever Grant Anderson to put the Guardians ahead. Cleveland added an insurance run later in the frame on a bases-loaded wild pitch.

Milwaukee loaded the bases in both the seventh and eighth innings but failed to score, as Cleveland’s bullpen escaped both threats to secure the victory.
