🛩️ Authorities Investigating Fatal Plane Crash in Geauga County
MIDDLEFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Three people were killed Saturday afternoon when a small aircraft crashed in a field in Geauga County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers from the Highway Patrol's Chardon Post responded to the scene in Middlefield Township after a Piper Comanche 250 went down about one mile east of Geauga County Airport.
Authorities identified the victims as Thomas A. Cunningham, 76, of Rome, John W. Taipale, 71, of Geneva, and Alexander C. Taipale, 40, of Geneva. All three occupants of the aircraft died in the crash.
Middlefield Township is located in rural Geauga County, about 40 miles east of Cleveland.
The cause of the crash has not been released. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and are investigating the incident.
💥 Fiery Route 2 Collision Claims Life of Mentor Driver
PAINESVILLE — A 61-year-old Mentor man was killed Friday night in a fiery head-on collision with an Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser on state Route 2 in Lake County.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Jerry Alberico was driving a 2011 Toyota Scion westbound in the wrong direction when he collided with the cruiser at about 8:51 p.m. near the Newell Street underpass along the border of Painesville and Painesville Township. Alberico was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the Scion caught fire following the impact. The trooper involved in the crash was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash forced the closure of westbound Route 2 between Richmond Street and state Route 44 for several hours. Eastbound traffic was reduced to one lane, and the Newell Street bridge over the highway was also closed. The roadway reopened shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday.
The trooper sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was transported to University Hospitals TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township, according to officials.
The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
📰 Local Student Reaches National Semifinals in Mott Million Dollar Challenge
MENTOR — Shore Middle School student Delayna earned national recognition after her invention, SpikeSkin, advanced to the semifinals of the Mott Million Dollar Challenge.
SpikeSkin is a slip-on cover designed to help track athletes walk from parking lots, gyms and restrooms to the track without damaging their spikes. The idea was selected as one of only 60 semifinalists from more than 3,700 submissions entered by 5,300 young people from across the country.
Last week, Delayna presented her invention live before judges and competed alongside some of the nation’s top young innovators. Although she did not advance beyond the semifinal round, reaching that stage marked an impressive accomplishment and highlighted her creativity, problem-solving skills and entrepreneurial spirit.
Delayna represented Mentor on the national stage and showcased the innovation being fostered in local schools.
A video of her original pitch can be viewed here on YouTube.com.
Additional information about the competition and the semifinalists is available at mottmillion.org.

Some of the best summer getaways don't require a plane ticket or even a long drive.
About 90 minutes from Mentor, visitors can catch a ferry to two of Ohio's most beloved islands—and enjoy two very different experiences in the same weekend.
Put-in-Bay brings the energy. Visitors can climb Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial, explore Crystal Cave, rent golf carts, enjoy waterfront restaurants, and soak in the lively harbor atmosphere. It's often called the "Key West of Lake Erie" for good reason.

⚾ Bazzana’s Career Night Powers Guardians to Victory Over Astros
HOUSTON — Rookie Travis Bazzana turned in the best game of his young career Saturday night, collecting four hits, two home runs, five RBIs and scoring three times as the Guardians rolled past the Astros 8-1.
Bazzana opened the game with a leadoff homer, singled in the third inning and added a three-run shot in the fifth before driving in another run with a single in the seventh. Left-hander Joey Cantillo improved to 6-3 after matching a career high with eight innings. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out nine, giving up just one hit after the second inning.
Houston starter Spencer Arrighetti surrendered six runs over six innings, while Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez went 0 for 3 to snap his 25-game on-base streak.
The series wraps up Sunday with Slade Cecconi scheduled to start for Cleveland against Houston’s Kai-Wei Teng.
