🚨 Mentor woman cited after dogs left in hot SUV during Solon baseball game

A Mentor woman is facing an animal cruelty charge after Solon police say they found two dogs inside a parked SUV during a youth baseball game Sunday afternoon.

According to the Solon Police Department, officers responded to Community Park around 2:09 p.m. after receiving a report of dogs left inside a silver SUV. The vehicle was not running, and although the rear hatch was open, officers checked on the animals because the temperature was about 85 degrees.

Police said the dogs were confined in crates with access to water but were panting heavily and breathing rapidly. Officers tried to locate the owner by using a patrol vehicle's lights and public address system but were unsuccessful.

The dogs were removed from the vehicle and taken to the Solon Police Department's kennel while dispatchers contacted the owner.

Police identified the owner as Valerie Haywood of Mentor, who later picked up the dogs at the station. She was cited for animal cruelty, a second-degree misdemeanor, and released. Police said she had been watching a baseball game while the dogs remained in the vehicle.

The case will proceed through the court system.

🛣️ Overnight Closure Scheduled for SR 283 Overpass at SR 44

City of Mentor

Motorists should plan for an overnight road closure as the westbound SR 283 overpass above SR 44 undergoes construction work.

The overpass will be closed beginning at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, and will reopen by 4 a.m. on Thursday, July 2. The temporary closure is necessary to allow crews to complete a concrete pour as part of ongoing infrastructure improvements.

During the closure, drivers will be directed to follow a posted detour using SR 44 and Heisley Road to SR 2, then SR 283 via Richmond Street. Travelers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and use caution while navigating the detour route.

🏘️ The Best $500 Home Improvement This Summer

Every homeowner eventually asks the same question:

"What's the smartest thing I can buy for my house?"

It's a reasonable question. But after you've owned a home for a while, you begin to realize there's a better one.

"What's the smartest problem I can solve?"

That small shift changes everything.

Many of us think about home improvements in terms of Return on Investment—how much value a project might add if we ever decide to sell. That's important, but it overlooks something even more valuable: how your home feels to live in every single day.

Think of it as Return on Enjoyment.

Maybe it's finally creating a backyard where your family actually wants to spend summer evenings. Maybe it's organizing the garage so you stop wasting time looking for tools. It could be reducing indoor humidity, fixing a nagging maintenance issue before it becomes expensive, or hiring someone to knock out a weekend's worth of chores.

None of those improvements are flashy.

Most visitors may never notice them.

But you'll notice them every day.

The happiest homeowners aren't always the ones with the biggest budgets. More often, they're the ones who've removed the most everyday frustrations.

Before you spend money on your next home project, don't ask yourself what you want to buy.

Ask yourself what's quietly making your home less enjoyable than it could be.

The answer might be the smartest investment you make all year.

👉🏻 On the website: Discover the Five Problems Worth Solving and learn why experienced homeowners often spend differently than new homeowners. It's a simple way of thinking that can change how you improve—and enjoy—your home for years to come.

⚾ Guardians Fall to Rangers After Late-Inning Rally

The Cleveland Guardians were unable to hold a midgame lead Monday night, falling 6-3 to the Texas Rangers as the visitors pulled away with a decisive seventh inning.

After trailing 1-0, Cleveland responded in the fifth when Gabriel Arias opened the inning with a solo home run. Chase DeLauter followed later with an RBI double to put the Guardians ahead 2-1.

Texas answered in the sixth before taking control in the seventh. Cameron Cauley, making his major league debut, tripled for his first career hit and later scored the go-ahead run on Nicky Lopez's RBI single. Justin Foscue added a two-out RBI double to extend the Rangers' lead.

Brayan Rocchio scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to trim the deficit to 4-3, but Cleveland couldn't complete the comeback. Foscue delivered another two-run double in the ninth, with the second run scoring after a fielding error in left.

Rookie starter Parker Messick took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings.

The defeat snapped Cleveland's momentum as the Guardians look to even the series Tuesday when Tanner Bibee is scheduled to face Rangers ace Jacob deGrom.
