The Wild World of the Van Gogh Truthers

In 1990, after years of practicing medicine and reviewing Van Gogh’s case history via his hundreds of letters, Arenberg published a paper in JAMA diagnosing Van Gogh as suffering not from epilepsy, as the artist’s physician claimed a century earlier, but from Ménière’s disease, an inner-ear affliction that can cause vertigo, of which Van Gogh complained, and tinnitus, a persistent ringing in the ears. Ménière’s, to Arenberg, could better explain Van Gogh’s decision to slice off his ear. After retiring, in 2017, Arenberg recommitted himself to studying Van Gogh and became convinced that art historians had made an even more alarming mistake: Van Gogh had not committed suicide. He’d been murdered.

🪭 Need Help Staying Cool This Summer? HEAP Summer Crisis Program Opens July 1

Lake and Geauga County residents who need help paying cooling costs may qualify for assistance through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) Summer Crisis Program, which begins July 1 and runs through September 30.

The program offers eligible households a one-time payment toward electric bills and, in some cases, a fan or air conditioner. Cooling equipment is available on a limited, first-come, first-served basis.

To qualify, households must have income at or below 175% of the federal poverty level and meet at least one additional requirement, including having a household member age 60 or older, providing physician documentation of a medical necessity, or having a utility disconnection notice.

Current Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) payments are not covered through this program. Copays may be required, and an in-person appointment is necessary.

Appointments can be scheduled by calling (440) 381-8230 or online through the CAP appointments website. Residents with questions can also contact Lifeline's Energy Assistance office at (440) 350-9160.

🌿The Hidden Health Benefits of Strong Friendships & Social Connections

As adults, friendships are often one of the first things squeezed out of our schedules.

Work gets busy. Families grow. Grandchildren arrive. Weekends fill with errands, appointments, and obligations. Before long, months may pass without spending time with people we genuinely enjoy.

Most of us know that eating well, staying active, and getting enough sleep are important for good health. But there's another healthy habit that often gets overlooked: maintaining meaningful friendships.

Research has consistently found that strong social connections are associated with lower stress, healthier lifestyles, better emotional well-being, and improved long-term health. In fact, some researchers believe supportive relationships can be just as important to overall wellness as many of the habits we traditionally focus on.

One reason is stress. Talking with someone you trust can help put life's challenges into perspective. Sometimes the advice matters, but often it's simply knowing someone is there to listen. Those conversations can leave us feeling calmer and more resilient long after they end.

Friends also tend to encourage healthy behaviors without even trying. We walk a little farther when we're chatting with someone. We're more likely to keep plans for an exercise class, visit a farmers market, volunteer, or attend a community event when someone joins us. Healthy habits often become easier—and more enjoyable—when they're shared.

Perhaps most importantly, regular social connections remind us that we belong. Even a short conversation over coffee or a quick phone call can brighten a difficult week and strengthen our sense of purpose.

If you're looking for one small way to improve your health this week, consider reaching out to someone you've been meaning to call. Invite a neighbor for a walk, reconnect with an old friend, or say yes to that lunch invitation.

Good health isn't built only in the kitchen or the gym.

Sometimes it begins around a dinner table, during a walk through the neighborhood, or across a cup of coffee with someone who makes life a little brighter.

Click through to discover why friendships may be one of the healthiest investments you can make—and five simple ways to strengthen the relationships that matter most.

⚾ Guardians' Early Lead Slips Away in Loss to Rangers

The Guardians let an early lead slip away Tuesday night, falling 4-2 to the Texas Rangers at Progressive Field after a costly defensive mistake and another dominant outing from Jacob deGrom.

Cleveland jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning when Kyle Manzardo launched his 10th home run of the season. However, deGrom settled in quickly, allowing just one more hit while retiring 18 of the next 19 batters to earn his seventh victory.

Texas evened the score in the third on Joc Pederson’s two-run homer before taking the lead in the seventh on an unusual play. Rookie outfielder Cooper Ingle, making only his second major league start in the outfield, caught a fly ball for the second out but mistakenly believed the inning was over and tossed the live ball into the stands. Under MLB rules, the runner was awarded home, giving the Rangers a 3-2 advantage.

Josh Jung added a solo home run in the eighth to provide an insurance run. Guardians starter Tanner Bibee took the loss after allowing three runs, while Cleveland’s offense was held in check after the opening inning.

The series concludes Wednesday afternoon with Joey Cantillo starting for the Guardians against Texas left-hander MacKenzie Gore.

⚾ Captains Outslug Whitecaps 20-11 to Move Within Two Games of First

The Lake County Captains survived one of the wildest games of the season Thursday night, outlasting the West Michigan Whitecaps 20-11 in a game that featured 31 combined runs, 29 hits and 13 pitchers.

Lake County (5-4 in the Midwest League East second half) climbed within two games of first place with the victory and will continue its road series in West Michigan through the holiday weekend.

The Captains appeared to be in control early after scoring five runs in the third inning behind RBI doubles from Dean Curley and Anthony Martinez before Jeffrey Mercedes added an RBI single.

West Michigan battled back, erasing a 7-4 deficit by scoring four runs in the sixth to briefly take an 8-7 lead.

Lake County answered with its biggest inning of the night, exploding for eight runs in the seventh. Nolan Schubart delivered a two-run double, Mercedes crushed his second three-run homer of the game, and Aaron Walton followed with a two-run homer to put the Captains back in front for good.

Schubart added the exclamation point with a grand slam in the ninth inning.

Mercedes finished with two home runs and five RBIs, while Schubart drove in six runs. Dean Curley collected four RBIs, and Walton added three.

Starter Jervis Alfaro allowed four runs (three earned) over 3⅔ innings. Luis Flores earned the win in relief as Lake County used five pitchers compared to eight by West Michigan.
