🌡️ Dangerous Heat Continues Today; Strong Storms Could Affect Fourth of July Plans

If you're heading outdoors today or Friday, prepare for dangerous heat. Northeast Ohio remains under a dome of hot air, with afternoon temperatures expected to reach 94 to 99 degrees today and 90 to 95 degrees Friday. Combined with high humidity, the heat index could climb above 100 degrees in many communities.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on older adults, young children, and pets. Never leave children or animals in parked vehicles, even for a short time.

Friday will stay hot and humid, but the weather pattern begins to change as a cold front approaches. A few thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon and evening before scattered storms become more likely on the Fourth of July.

While not everyone will see rain, any storms that develop Saturday afternoon or Saturday night could produce strong wind gusts, heavy downpours, and dangerous lightning, which could affect holiday cookouts, parades, and fireworks displays.

If you have outdoor plans this weekend, keep an eye on the latest forecast and have a backup plan if storms approach.

🎶 Celebrate Independence Day Weekend with Two Free Community Events in Mentor

Mentor will officially kick off Independence Day weekend with a historic community celebration on Friday, July 3, beginning with the unveiling of a new James A. Garfield statue at the Mentor Municipal Center.

Residents are asked to gather in the turnaround in front of City Hall by 5:45 p.m., with the dedication ceremony beginning at 6:00 p.m. The slightly larger-than-life bronze statue was created by nationally recognized sculptor Alan Cottrill, whose more than 400 works include Ohio's Thomas Edison statue in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall.

Following the ceremony, everyone is invited to a free picnic on the grounds of the Mentor Civic Amphitheater. The city will provide hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, and ice cream sandwiches, and guests are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and even their own food.

Family activities continue throughout the evening, highlighted by the free 1776 Yard Race at 6:45 p.m. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities can participate without registering in advance. The course winds through Civic Center Park, where 250 American flags will line portions of the route. Yard games, Garfield-themed coloring activities for children, and screenings of Forging a President and the community-produced What America Means to Me will round out the evening.

The Mentor Municipal Center is located at 8500 Civic Center Blvd. All are welcome to attend this historic community celebration.

⚡ Power Outages Impact the Area During Heat Wave

Thousands of FirstEnergy customers across Northeast Ohio lost power Wednesday as excessive heat strained the electrical system, with outages affecting several Lake County communities.

In addition to larger outages reported in Lakewood, Berea, Olmsted Falls and Olmsted Township, residents in Mentor-on-the-Lake also experienced outages, along with smaller outage areas in Mentor and Willoughby.

FirstEnergy said the widespread outages in the Olmsted Falls area were caused by a pole fire and equipment problems at a nearby substation. The company said power has already been restored to about half of the affected customers there, and crews will continue working around the clock until service is fully restored.

FirstEnergy has not yet identified whether the outages in Lake County are related to the same equipment issues.

With temperatures remaining dangerously high, residents without electricity should stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and check on elderly neighbors or anyone who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Customers can monitor restoration estimates and report outages through FirstEnergy's online outage map.

🐾 How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Actually Need? It Depends on More Than Breed

A tired dog is often a happier dog—but that doesn't mean every dog needs hours of running every day.

The right amount of exercise depends on several factors, including your dog's age, breed, size and overall health. While a young Border Collie may thrive on two hours of activity, an older Bulldog could be perfectly content with a couple of leisurely walks.

As a general guide:

  • Small and low-energy dogs often need 30 to 60 minutes of daily activity.

  • Medium-sized dogs typically benefit from about an hour each day.

  • High-energy breeds, including Labradors, Australian Shepherds and Huskies, may require 90 minutes or more, along with mental stimulation.

Exercise isn't just about burning energy. Daily walks, games of fetch, scent games and puzzle toys can help prevent boredom, reduce unwanted behaviors and support a healthy weight.

Watch your dog's behavior for clues. Restlessness, chewing furniture or constant barking may signal they need more activity, while excessive panting, limping or reluctance to move can mean they've had enough.

During Northeast Ohio's summer heat, try exercising early in the morning or later in the evening, and always bring water for both you and your four-legged companion.

Why it matters: A consistent exercise routine is one of the simplest ways to keep your dog healthier, happier and mentally engaged throughout every stage of life. READ MORE

⚾ Fry, Hedges Power Guardians Past Rangers to Win Series Finale

The Guardians closed out their series against the Texas Rangers with an impressive 9-4 victory on Wednesday, ending Texas’ six-game winning streak and building momentum ahead of a crucial four-game series against the first-place Chicago White Sox.

Cleveland’s offense broke through early with a five-run second inning. Austin Hedges helped spark the rally with a squeeze bunt that brought home Bryan Rocchio, while Gabriel Arias scored on a wild pitch before David Fry delivered the big blow, launching a three-run home run to right-center to give the Guardians a commanding 5-0 lead.

Hedges continued his productive afternoon by adding a two-run homer in the eighth inning, finishing with three RBIs. Rookie Chase DeLauter stayed hot at the plate with three hits, including an RBI single in the seventh after Steven Kwan opened the inning with a triple. Since returning from the injured list, DeLauter has collected eight hits in four games.

Joey Cantillo earned his seventh victory of the season, allowing two runs over five innings. The Guardians will look to carry their offensive momentum into Thursday’s opener against the AL Central-leading White Sox, with Slade Cecconi scheduled to start.

⚾ Captains Blow Three-Run Lead in 10-7 Loss at West Michigan

The Lake County Captains couldn't hold onto another late lead Wednesday night, falling 10-7 to the West Michigan Whitecaps after a disastrous eighth inning.

Lake County led 7-4 entering the bottom of the eighth before the bullpen unraveled. The Whitecaps scored six runs in the inning, taking advantage of four walks, a two-run single by Clayton Campbell and another bases-loaded walk to complete the comeback.

The Captains' pitchers issued 11 walks in the game, with reliever Cam Schuelke taking the loss after allowing four runs while recording just one out. Schuelke surrendered one hit and walked three batters during the decisive eighth inning.

Starter Jacob Zibin gave Lake County a solid outing, pitching five innings while allowing three runs on five hits before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Offensively, the Captains produced enough to win. Esteban González drove in a run with a fourth-inning single before adding his 10th home run of the season in the eighth. Nolan Schubart blasted his 17th homer, a two-run shot in the seventh, while Tommy Hawke delivered a two-run single during a three-run fourth inning.

The loss drops Lake County to 5-5 in the Midwest League second-half standings. The Captains continue their road series against West Michigan today.
