🎆 Where to Celebrate the Fourth of July Around Mentor and Lake County

Looking for fireworks, a hometown parade or a family-friendly festival this Independence Day weekend? Communities across Lake and Geauga counties are celebrating America's 250th anniversary with events ranging from historic ceremonies to some of Northeast Ohio's biggest fireworks displays.

Mentor kicks off the holiday Friday evening with the unveiling of a James A. Garfield statue followed by a free community picnic at the Civic Amphitheater. On Saturday, July 4, the celebration continues with skydivers, patriotic presentations, an Eagles tribute concert by Hotel California and what the city says will be the largest fireworks show in Mentor's history.

You'll also find fireworks in Eastlake, Willoughby, Fairport Harbor, Chardon, Madison, Bainbridge and Middlefield, while communities including Chardon, Madison, Chester Township, North Perry and Fairport Harbor are hosting traditional Independence Day parades.

Families with young children may enjoy Chardon's Old Glory Day, Willowick's time capsule celebration or Perry's free ice cream social on July 5.

If you're planning to attend one of the larger events, arrive early for parking, bring lawn chairs or blankets where permitted and check individual event guidelines. Some venues, including Mentor's Civic Amphitheater, prohibit outside alcohol, glass containers, pets and coolers.

Whether you're staying close to home or exploring nearby communities, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate the Fourth of July throughout Northeast Ohio.

🦟 Lake County Announces Mosquito Spray Schedule for July 6–9

The Lake County General Health District (LCGHD) has released its mosquito treatment schedule for the week of July 6–9, with Mentor's western neighborhoods (Zone 2A) scheduled for treatment on Monday, July 6, weather permitting.

The Health District conducts mosquito control each summer to reduce mosquito populations and help lower the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus, La Crosse encephalitis, and St. Louis encephalitis. Officials note that mosquito treatments also help improve outdoor comfort during the summer months.

This week's schedule includes:

  • Monday, July 6: Mentor 2A (western Mentor) and Wickliffe

  • Tuesday, July 7: Madison 10A and 10B

  • Wednesday, July 8: Willowick and Willoughby 7B

  • Thursday, July 9: Painesville 11A

Spraying may be delayed or canceled if mosquito trap counts fall below treatment thresholds, winds exceed 15 mph, there's a 50% or greater chance of rain, temperatures fall below 55 degrees, equipment problems occur, or an Air Quality Advisory is in effect.

Because the schedule can change, residents are encouraged to check for updates before treatment day by calling the mosquito hotline (440) 350-2088 or visiting the Health District's website.

📰 Mentor Seeks Public Input on Next Five Years of Community Development Funding

Residents will have two opportunities this summer to help shape how the City of Mentor spends future Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.

The city will host a public meeting at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, in Council Chambers at 8500 Civic Center Blvd. to gather feedback on priorities for its 2027–2031 CDBG Consolidated Plan. A second meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Mentor Public Library Headlands Branch, 4669 Corduroy Road.

The federally required Consolidated Plan helps guide how CDBG funds are used over the next five years. These grants often support neighborhood improvements, public facilities, infrastructure, housing programs and services that benefit low- and moderate-income residents.

Residents who cannot attend either meeting may submit written comments through 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7.

Questions about the planning process can be directed to Grant Supervisor Kevin Grippi at [email protected] or 440-974-5714 during regular City Hall business hours.

Community input helps determine funding priorities before the city submits its plan for federal approval.

🏖️ Lake Erie Sand Sculpture Tour Returns With More Parks, More Art and Free Family Fun

The Lake Erie Sand Sculpture Tour is back for a second year, bringing five large-scale sand sculptures to five lakefront parks across Lake County this summer.

After drawing nearly 25,000 visitors in its inaugural year, the 2026 tour expands from four to five sculptures and adds three new locations. Northeast Ohio native and internationally acclaimed sand sculptor Carl Jara returns for the event, joined this year by award-winning artist Greg J. Grady.

Visitors are invited to watch the sculptures take shape, meet the artists and enjoy Lake County's Lake Erie shoreline throughout the construction process. The free tour begins June 24 at Lakefront Lodge and continues through July 11, ending with a collaborative oversized sculpture at Headlands Beach State Park.

The remaining schedule includes:

  • July 2, 3 & 5: Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park – Carl Jara

  • July 7-9: Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina – Greg J. Grady

  • July 9-11: Headlands Beach State Park – Carl Jara & Greg J. Grady

Admission is free, and most sculpture sites are accessible using paved paths or accessible walkways, although some viewing areas may include beach or grassy terrain. Build dates may change because of weather or site conditions.

⚾ Rocchio's Walk-Off Homer Lifts Guardians Past White Sox in Thriller

The Cleveland Guardians opened a pivotal four-game series against the Chicago White Sox with a dramatic 6-5 walk-off victory Thursday night at Progressive Field, pulling even closer in the tightly contested AL Central race.

Trailing by three runs midway through the game, Cleveland mounted a steady comeback before Brayan Rocchio delivered the decisive blow in the ninth inning. After Rhys Hoskins drew a leadoff walk, Rocchio crushed a two-run homer down the right-field line, sending the home crowd into celebration and sealing the Guardians' comeback win.

Cleveland grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by Travis Bazzana and a bases-loaded walk from Rocchio. Chicago answered with five unanswered runs, including a two-run homer by Chase Meidroth in the sixth that ended Slade Cecconi's night on the mound.

The Guardians chipped away at the deficit with an RBI groundout from Chase DeLauter in the sixth before David Fry came off the bench to launch a pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh, cutting the lead to one.

Cleveland's bullpen proved instrumental, as Daniel Espino, Shawn Armstrong and Tim Herrin combined for four scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Herrin earned the victory as the Guardians improved to 46-42 and moved within striking distance of first place in the division heading into Friday's matchup with Gavin Williams scheduled to start.

⚾ Captains Fall, Pitching Woes Continue Against TinCaps

The Lake County Captains dropped their second straight game to the West Michigan TinCaps Thursday, falling 9-3 as the club's pitching struggles continued.

Starter Will McCausland allowed six runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings, and the bullpen gave up three more as West Michigan scored 30 runs over the first three games of the series.

The TinCaps jumped ahead early with two runs in the first, two more in the second, and another pair in the third to build a 6-0 lead before Patrick Lee added a two-run homer in the fifth.

Lake County's offense couldn't keep pace, collecting just five hits. The Captains scored all three of their runs in the sixth inning, with Dean Curley driving in two on a double after a wild pitch plated the first run.

The Captains will need improved pitching to get back on track after allowing 30 runs through three games against one of the league's hottest offenses.

The loss drops Lake County to 5-6 in the Midwest League second half. They continue to the series today at West Michigan.

The famous Liberty Bell has a thin crack that became larger over time. While it rang for many important occasions in early American history, today it is preserved as a symbol of freedom rather than being rung.
