🛑 Mentor Officials Will Revisit Lakeshore Highlands Traffic Concerns

Mentor officials will take another look at cut-through traffic in Lakeshore Highlands after residents renewed their request for stop signs or another measure along Highland Way.
Neil Stein, president of the Lakeshore Highlands Homeowners Association, told City Council on July 7 that motorists use the neighborhood as a shortcut between Lakeshore Boulevard and Heisley Road.
Stein said the development is home to about 50 families and that information collected by residents showed 50 to 75 vehicles passing through during a two-hour period each morning. He characterized the vehicles as commuter traffic and said residents are concerned about people walking dogs, riding bicycles and backing out of driveways.
The traffic figures and safety concerns were presented by Stein and were not independently confirmed during the meeting.
City officials said the neighborhood had previously been reviewed through Mentor’s traffic-calming process. Earlier city counts found relatively low speeds and did not show the same increase in traffic volume recorded in some other neighborhoods, although officials said nearby bridge or Route 44 construction had produced a small increase.
The earlier review resulted in no changes. During the July 7 discussion, however, the administration agreed to continue monitoring the neighborhood and look again at possible solutions.
Council also discussed whether stop signs could be installed temporarily until the nearby construction is complete. No signs or other traffic changes were approved, and no timetable was announced.

🐂 Farmpark’s Free FarmFest Returns Today
Lake Metroparks Farmpark will host a free day of animals, demonstrations and hands-on farm activities when FarmFest returns today, July 11.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Farmpark, 8800 Euclid Chardon Road in Kirtland. Admission is free for all visitors, making it an easy family outing for July.
FarmFest gives guests a chance to experience the Farmpark in full swing. Visitors can meet animals, explore interactive programs and learn how food, fiber and farming connect to everyday life.
The day will feature groups that regularly call Farmpark home, including antique engine enthusiasts, spinning and weaving artisans and beekeepers. Food trucks will be on site, along with cooking demonstrations from local chef Lisa Pucci Delgado and a breadmaking presentation by Reveille Bakery.
Visitors can also pick up tips on small-space gardening and backyard flock basics with Meyer Hatchery. Raven Hooves Farm will demonstrate how wool becomes yarn.
Farmpark officials say FarmFest is one of the site’s biggest days of the year and the only day guests can visit free. Pets are not permitted.

📰 Lake County Juvenile Court clerk receives statewide honor
Sharon DeLembo of the Lake County Juvenile Court has been named Clerk of the Year by the Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Clerks.
DeLembo joined the court in April 2024 and was recognized for her professionalism, willingness to assist colleagues and commitment to serving the public.
According to a court news release, DeLembo regularly steps beyond her assigned duties to help the office operate smoothly. Her colleagues also rely on her knowledge, positive attitude and ability to handle both routine and complex responsibilities.
The court said DeLembo treats community members with respect and care as they work through the juvenile court system. She also helps mentor and train new employees, working to make sure they feel prepared and supported in their roles.

🍽️ Dinner Rescue: Two Fresh Summer Dinners Ready in About 30 Minutes
Some evenings, the hardest part of dinner is deciding what to make. This week’s Dinner Rescue solves that problem with two colorful, family-friendly meals built around fresh summer vegetables and familiar flavors.
First up is Creamy Cajun Chicken & Sweet Corn Skillet, a one-pan dinner featuring tender chicken, sweet corn and bell peppers in a light, creamy Cajun sauce. The seasoning brings plenty of flavor without overwhelming the meal, and the heat level can easily be adjusted for younger diners. Serve it over rice or alongside crusty bread for an easy dinner with minimal cleanup.
Our second recipe, Southwest Turkey Taco Stuffed Zucchini Boats, gives taco night a fresh summer upgrade. Zucchini halves are filled with seasoned ground turkey, black beans, corn, tomatoes and melted cheese. Set out salsa, avocado, Greek yogurt or crushed tortilla chips and let everyone finish their own.
Both recipes use ingredients available at a typical supermarket and can be prepared in about 30 minutes. They are also flexible enough to work with what you already have: frozen corn can replace fresh, ground chicken can stand in for turkey, and shredded rotisserie chicken can shorten preparation even further.
🍽 Dinner Rescue Tip
When zucchini is especially large, scoop out a little extra center and save it. Chop the zucchini flesh and add it to scrambled eggs, pasta sauce or tomorrow’s stir-fry.
Tonight’s question: Which one would disappear first at your table?

⚾ Parker Messick’s Strong Start Lifts Guardians Past Marlins, 3-2
The Cleveland Guardians opened their series in Miami with a 3-2 victory Friday night, powered by six strong innings from Parker Messick and a long home run from Chase DeLauter.
Messick improved to 8-5 after allowing just one hit and one run. The left-hander carried a no-hitter through five innings before Heriberto Hernández broke it up with a solo homer in the sixth. Messick walked four and struck out one.
DeLauter gave Cleveland the lead in the fourth with his 10th home run of the season, a 430-foot drive to right-center that made it 2-0. Travis Bazzana added a sacrifice fly in the fifth, scoring Austin Hedges for a 3-0 advantage.
Miami pulled closer on solo homers by Hernández and Leo Jiménez, but the Guardians’ bullpen protected the lead. Cade Smith worked a hitless ninth to record his MLB-leading 28th save.
Cleveland will send Tanner Bibee to the mound Saturday against Miami right-hander Eury Pérez in the second game of the series.

⚾ Captains Win Seventh Straight, Pull Within One Game of First
The Lake County Captains continued their climb up the Midwest League East standings Friday night, defeating the Lansing Lugnuts 6-4 for their seventh consecutive victory.
Lake County took control early at Classic Auto Group Park. Anthony Martinez opened the scoring with a two-run double in the first inning, bringing home Tommy Hawke and Aaron Walton.
Hawke added a solo home run in the third, and Dean Curley followed with his 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot that gave the Captains a 5-0 lead.
Lansing chipped away with home runs from Myles Naylor and Pedro Pineda. Lake County added an important insurance run in the sixth when Esteban González scored on a wild pitch.
Jackson Humphries earned the win, improving to 1-4 with a 4.75 ERA. Izaak Martinez protected the two-run lead by striking out the side in the ninth inning for his sixth save.
The victory improved Lake County to 12-6 in the second half. The Captains are one game behind the Great Lakes Loons for first place in the East Division, making each game increasingly important in the race for a second-half playoff berth.
Lake County hosts Lansing again Saturday, July 11, at 7 p.m. The evening’s Lake County Fish Fry’s Night promotion includes fish fry specials and themed entertainment.
