Most Men Notice Aging All at Once

Men's skin is 25% thicker than women's. That sounds like an advantage. It isn't. Thicker skin delays the visible signs of aging — until collagen drops. And when it drops, it drops hard: heavier eye bags, deeper wrinkles, dark spots, loss of firmness. All at once. Most men were never taught to get ahead of it. That's where Particle Face Cream comes in. A 6-in-1 formula engineered specifically for men's skin — reduces eye bags, dark spots, and wrinkles, restores firmness, hydrates deeply, revives dull tone. Two minutes a day. No complicated routine. Over 1,000,000 men already use it. Try it risk-free with a 30-day money-back guarantee. 20% off with code BH20.

📰 Lake County Adds New Cooling System, Promises Closer Dog Shelter Oversight

Lake County has purchased a new cooling unit for its dog shelter and promised closer oversight after an air conditioning failure during the recent heat wave forced the dogs to be temporarily relocated.

County Administrator Jason Boyd said officials learned around June 22 that the shelter’s aging geothermal cooling system had malfunctioned. Replacement parts were ordered, but they had not arrived as of this week.

As temperatures rose in late June and early July, shelter staff requested additional fans and portable cooling equipment. The county supplied available units while also responding to cooling problems at the jail, data center and county administration building.

Officials eventually determined that safe conditions could no longer be maintained at the shelter. The dogs were then moved with help from community partners.

The county has since purchased a commercial cooling unit for about $50,000. Commission President John Plecnik said it can cool the entire shelter and will become the building’s primary system. Once repaired, the geothermal equipment will serve as a backup.

Commissioners also promised a broader review of the shelter’s policies, procedures and daily operations. Commissioner Morris Beverage said updates will be provided during weekly commissioners meetings.

The repair timeline and details of the operational review have not yet been announced.

📰 Mentor Eagles Donate $1,000 After July Fourth Flags Go Missing

A disappointing incident following Mentor’s July Fourth celebration has led to a generous show of community support.

Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 365 in Mentor donated $1,000 to the Veterans and First Responders organization after learning that some of the flags the group provided for the celebration had been taken.

The contribution was recognized during the July 7 Mentor City Council meeting. Council President Janet Dowling said the Eagles wanted to turn a negative moment at the end of the holiday celebration into something positive.

There was encouraging news, too. City officials said several of the flags had been returned by Monday. The meeting discussion did not specify how many were originally taken or whether all had been recovered.

Assistant City Manager David Fowler thanked the people who returned the flags and praised the organization that supplied them.

The local Eagles chapter’s motto is “People Helping People,” and the $1,000 contribution offered a fitting example—supporting a community organization after an unfortunate end to an otherwise successful holiday weekend.

City officials also said residents interested in helping the Veterans and First Responders organization could find a donation link through the City of Mentor’s website.

🦅 Meet Apollo the Bald Eagle at Mentor Public Library July 15

Families can meet a live bald eagle and learn about one of the nation’s most recognizable wildlife species during a free program at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Mentor Public Library’s Main Branch, 8215 Mentor Ave.

Apollo is an animal ambassador from Lake Metroparks and has lived at Penitentiary Glen Reservation in Kirtland since 2011.

As a juvenile, Apollo broke a wing during a fight with an adult bald eagle. A concerned neighbor contacted the Ohio Division of Wildlife, and Apollo was taken to the Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center for treatment.

Apollo survived, but the injury left him unable to fly or return to the wild. He now helps Lake Metroparks teach children and adults about bald eagles and Ohio wildlife.

During the library program, a Lake Metroparks ranger will introduce families to Apollo and share information about bald eagles. Seeing an animal ambassador up close can help children better understand wildlife, rehabilitation and why some injured animals cannot be released.

The program is open to children of all ages. Admission is free, but registration is required because space is limited.

Register at mentorpl.org or call the Main Branch at 440-255-8811, ext. 3.

🚗 NEXT STOP with Sunday Drives: Marietta, Ohio & Parkersburg, West Virginia

Two River Towns, One Relaxing Weekend Along the Ohio

Some weekend trips are built around thrills. This one is about slowing down, walking historic streets and letting the Ohio River set the pace.

Roughly three and a half hours from Mentor, Marietta and Parkersburg sit across the river from one another—but each brings something different to the weekend.

Start in Marietta, where brick-lined streets, historic homes and a compact downtown make exploration easy. Founded in 1788, the city played an important role in the early settlement of the Northwest Territory. Visitors can tour Campus Martius Museum, cross the historic pedestrian bridge into Harmar Village, browse independent shops or simply walk along the riverfront.

Then cross into Parkersburg, where the weekend’s most distinctive experience awaits. A sternwheeler carries visitors from Point Park to Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, home to a reconstructed Palladian mansion, peaceful grounds and optional wagon rides. The complete island visit takes about three hours, making it an ideal centerpiece for Sunday before heading home.

Together, the towns offer an easy combination: Marietta for history, dining and walkability; Parkersburg for an Ohio River adventure that feels unlike the usual weekend stop.

⚾ Bibee, Kwan Lead Guardians Past Marlins for Series Win

Tanner Bibee delivered one of his strongest outings of the season Saturday as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Miami Marlins 4-1 and secured another road series victory.

Bibee worked 6⅔ innings, allowing one run while walking four and striking out three. The victory improved his record to 3-9. Colin Holderman retired Miami in order in the ninth for his first save.

Steven Kwan gave Cleveland the lead in the fourth inning. Gabriel Arias and Petey Halpin opened the rally with consecutive singles, and Kwan brought both home with an opposite-field double.

Kwan also helped prevent Miami from scoring in the third. With two outs and runners moving, his throw toward second base led to Kyle Stowers being tagged out before Otto López crossed home plate.

The Marlins cut the deficit to 2-1 in the seventh, but Cleveland answered quickly. Kyle Manzardo was hit by a pitch, Kahlil Watson doubled and Patrick Bailey worked back from an 0-2 count before driving a two-run double off the left-field wall.

Arias finished with three hits for the Guardians, who won Friday’s series opener 3-2.

Cleveland entered Saturday in second place in the American League Central. Left-hander Joey Cantillo is scheduled to start Sunday’s series finale.

⚾ Captains’ Winning Streak Ends With Loss to Lansing

The Lake County Captains’ seven-game winning streak ended Saturday night as the Lansing Lugnuts used a four-run third inning to earn a 6-4 victory at Classic Auto Group Park.

Lake County briefly led 2-1 after Jeffrey Mercedes and Tyler Howard delivered consecutive two-out RBI singles in the second inning. Lansing answered immediately, scoring four times in the third to take a 5-2 lead.

Mercedes brought the Captains back within a run in the eighth, driving home Jace LaViolette and Dean Curley with his second run-scoring single of the night. Lansing added an insurance run in the ninth, and Lake County could not complete the comeback.

Mercedes finished with three RBIs, while Howard extended his hitting streak to seven games. Nolan Schubart drew a walk to extend his on-base streak to 42 games, the longest by a Captains player since at least 2005.

Starting pitcher Jervis Alfaro took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and four walks over five innings.

The defeat dropped Lake County to 12-7 in the Midwest League’s second half, two games behind first-place Great Lakes.

Lake County and Lansing close their six-game series Sunday, July 12, at 1 p.m. in Eastlake. The afternoon includes Mascot Olympics, pregame catch on the field, player autographs and postgame kids running the bases.

Which U.S. national park contains the world’s largest gypsum sand dune field?

Login or Subscribe to participate

🐝 Buzz Fact: Most sand dunes are made of quartz, but this dune is built from soft, bright-white gypsum crystals. Gypsum usually dissolves and washes away in water, making a dune field this large extremely rare. It also stays cooler than typical sand—so your feet are less likely to feel like two baked potatoes in flip-flops.
