📰 Lake County Communities Mourn Officer Ryan Shannon

Several Lake County communities are mourning the death of Willoughby Hills police officer Ryan Shannon following an off-duty accident.
The Willoughby Hills Police Department announced Shannon’s death and said additional details would not be released at this time out of respect for his family and loved ones.
Shannon’s law-enforcement career included service with several Northeast Ohio departments. He was serving as a full-time Willoughby Hills officer and also worked part time for the North Perry and Perry Village police departments. He previously served with the Madison Township and Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority police departments.
Perry Village said Shannon was sworn in there in May 2009 and served the community for more than 17 years.
Willoughby Hills Police Chief Matthew Naegele described Shannon as a veteran officer who served proudly for many years.
The Willoughby Hills department remembered Shannon for the professionalism, compassion and commitment he brought to his work.
“His unwavering commitment, professionalism and compassion left a lasting impact on those he served, and those who served alongside him,” the department said.
Residents are being asked to keep Shannon’s family, friends and fellow officers in their thoughts and prayers.
Details about the accident and funeral arrangements had not been released at the time of publication.
“Rest easy, Ryan,” the department wrote. “Your legacy of service will not be forgotten.”

📰 Local Student Reaches National Semifinals in Mott Million Dollar Challenge
Shore Middle School student Delayna earned national recognition after her invention, SpikeSkin, advanced to the semifinals of the Mott Million Dollar Challenge.
SpikeSkin is a slip-on cover designed to help track athletes walk from parking lots, gyms and restrooms to the track without damaging their spikes. The idea was selected as one of only 60 semifinalists from more than 3,700 submissions entered by 5,300 young people from across the country.
Last week, Delayna presented her invention live before judges and competed alongside some of the nation’s top young innovators. Although she did not advance beyond the semifinal round, reaching that stage marked an impressive accomplishment and highlighted her creativity, problem-solving skills and entrepreneurial spirit.
Delayna represented Mentor on the national stage and showcased the innovation being fostered in local schools.
A video of her original pitch can be viewed here on YouTube.com.
Additional information about the competition and the semifinalists is available at mottmillion.org.

Both proposals require conditional-use permits under Section 1135.03 of Mentor’s Code of Ordinances.

🛣️ NEXT STOP: Sunday Drives:
Lake Superior Scenery, Apostle Islands and Two Welcoming Harbor Towns
For Northeast Ohio travelers accustomed to Lake Erie, Lake Superior can feel almost ocean-like—colder, wilder and dramatically different.
Bayfield and Ashland sit along Wisconsin’s Chequamegon Bay, roughly a full day’s drive from Mentor. That makes this the longest Sunday Drive we have featured and better suited to a three- or four-day getaway than a quick weekend. Travelers willing to make the journey, however, are rewarded with rugged shoreline scenery, cool lake breezes and access to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
Bayfield is the smaller and more tourism-focused of the two communities. Its walkable harbor area places marinas, locally owned shops, cafés and boat departures close together. A narrated Apostle Islands cruise is one of the easiest ways for first-time visitors to see sandstone cliffs, sea caves, historic lighthouses and island scenery without needing specialized outdoor skills.
About 25 minutes away, Ashland provides a quieter and more practical complement. Its historic downtown is known for more than 20 large murals, while waterfront trails, public beaches and parks offer easy ways to experience Lake Superior from shore.
Together, the towns create a trip with two distinct strengths: Bayfield provides the signature Apostle Islands experience, while Ashland adds affordability, public art and a less hurried lakefront atmosphere.
Why Northeast Ohio travelers may love it
🌊 A Great Lakes coastline unlike Lake Erie
⛵ Narrated Apostle Islands cruises and lighthouse views
🎨 A walkable downtown mural route in Ashland
🚲 Waterfront trails, beaches and harbor parks
📅 Enough variety for a three- or four-day escape
🚗 Sunday Drives Tip
Lake Superior is known for cold water, fog, rough seas and sudden weather changes—even during summer. Pack layers, check the marine forecast and leave flexibility around any boat excursion.
👉🏻 Considering this longer Sunday Drive? Our website guide includes a realistic three- and four-day itinerary, where to stay, which Apostle Islands experience may be right for your group, practical planning advice, estimated trip costs and our Local Buzz Verdict on whether this unforgettable Lake Superior adventure is worth the drive from Northeast Ohio.
Coming Next Sunday
We will stay much closer to home as Sunday Drives explores two scenic communities where winding roads, breathtaking overlooks and locally owned favorites make the journey every bit as enjoyable as the destination.

⚾ Bazzana’s Walk-Off Homer Lifts Guardians Past Pirates
Travis Bazzana delivered the biggest hit of his young career Saturday night, launching a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Cleveland Guardians a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The win allowed Cleveland to split a doubleheader after losing the opener 7-1.
Patrick Bailey opened the ninth with a single, and Steven Kwan followed with a double down the left-field line. Bailey was thrown out trying to score from first, but Bazzana quickly ended the game.
The rookie second baseman drove a 1-0 changeup from Dennis Santana 414 feet to center field for his eighth home run of the season and first major-league walk-off hit. It was Cleveland’s fourth walk-off victory of the year.
The Guardians had trailed 3-0 before tying the game in the eighth. Chase DeLauter drove in Kwan with a single, Brayan Rocchio scored on a wild pitch and Kahlil Watson brought home DeLauter with a single to right.
Kwan finished with three hits, while Cade Smith retired Pittsburgh in order in the ninth to earn the win.
Cleveland entered Sunday at 52-47 and virtually tied with the Chicago White Sox atop the American League Central.

⚾ LaViolette Homers as Captains Stay in Second-Half Race
The Lake County Captains remained within striking distance of first place Saturday night, defeating the Dayton Dragons 6-2 at Classic Auto Group Park.
Jace LaViolette delivered the Captains’ first two runs. His first-inning single brought home Tommy Hawke, and his 15th home run of the season broke a 1-1 tie in the third.
Tyler Howard added his second homer of the year in the fourth as Lake County built a lead its pitching staff would comfortably protect.
Starter Will McCausland allowed one run on three hits over 4⅓ innings. He walked one and struck out two before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Cam Schuelke provided 2⅔ scoreless innings, allowing one hit and earning the victory. Donovan Zsak worked the final two innings and surrendered only a solo home run to Dayton’s Julio Carreras.
The win improved Lake County to 13-8 in the second half. The Captains remain three games behind the Great Lakes Loons, who have won three straight, making every opportunity to gain ground increasingly important.
Lake County and Dayton conclude their abbreviated series Sunday, July 19, at 1 p.m. in Eastlake.
Sunday’s game also features a National Ice Cream Day promotion presented by 3 Daughters Construction. Fans can expect special ice cream offerings and other surprises throughout the afternoon.
