🏈 Mitchell Trubisky Brings Annual Football Camp Back to Mentor

Mitchell Trubisky returned to Mentor this week for a summer tradition that connects his NFL career with the football program where he got his start.

The eighth Mitchell Trubisky Mentor Football Camp ran July 20–22 at Mentor High School. Young players gathered at Mentor Stadium for football drills, instruction and time on the field with Trubisky and members of the local football community.

Trubisky attended camps in Mentor as a child before becoming a three-year starting quarterback for the Cardinals. He helped lead Mentor to the state semifinals in 2012 and later continued his career at North Carolina and in the NFL.

Now entering his 10th professional season, he returns as the camp’s host.

The event also adds another chapter to Mentor’s football tradition. The Cardinals are coming off consecutive undefeated regular seasons, and the camp gives younger players an opportunity to learn the game in the same setting where Trubisky developed as a high school quarterback.

This year’s camp came shortly before Trubisky begins a new chapter with the Tennessee Titans. He signed a two-year contract in March and joins a quarterback group that includes Cam Ward, Will Levis and Hendon Hooker.

His professional career has taken him to several NFL cities, but the annual camp continues to bring him back to Mentor.

🚧 Hopkins Road to Close for Water Line and Road Repairs Aug. 2–7

Not an actual representation of the Hopkins road repairs.

Hopkins Road will be closed in both directions between Tyler Boulevard and Twinbrook Road from Aug. 2 through Aug. 7, 2026.

Crews will replace a 16-inch water line and repair roadway damage caused by a water main break last winter.

Drivers who normally use that section of Hopkins Road should plan an alternate route and allow extra travel time while the closure is in place. No official detour was included in the notice.

The construction schedule is weather-dependent and may change if conditions delay the work.

Motorists should watch for temporary traffic signs near the work zone and check for updates before traveling through the area. Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.

👉🏻 See the location map and full closure details on the Mentor Local Buzz website.

📰 Mentor Unemployment Rises to 3.1%, Second-Lowest Among Ohio’s Larger Cities

Mentor’s unemployment rate increased in June, but the city continued to post one of the lowest rates among Ohio communities with at least 50,000 residents.

The city’s rate rose 0.5 percentage points from May to 3.1% in June 2026, according to civilian labor force estimates from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. That was still below Mentor’s June 2025 rate of 3.9%.

Only Lakewood had a lower rate among Ohio’s larger cities, at 2.8%. Mentor ranked second at 3.1%, followed by Cuyahoga Falls at 3.3%. Kettering, Columbus and Parma each recorded rates of 3.4%.

Mentor’s civilian labor force increased to approximately 25,900 people. Based on the reported rate, about 800 members of that labor force were unemployed and actively seeking work during June. That is a rounded estimate rather than a separately reported figure.

The increase was not limited to Mentor. Lake County’s unemployment rate rose 0.4 percentage points to 3.2%, while Ohio’s rate increased 0.7 percentage points to 3.7%.

Despite those monthly increases, all three rates remained lower than they were one year earlier. Lake County’s rate was 4.1% in June 2025, while Ohio’s was 4.5%.

The report does not identify the industries or economic conditions behind June’s changes. Future monthly estimates will show whether the increase continues or proves temporary.

Could Ten Minutes Outside Make Your Day Feel Better?

Most wellness advice asks us to add another task to the day. But one helpful habit may be much simpler: step outside for a few intentional minutes.

Outdoor time can support several parts of a healthy routine at once. Daylight helps signal the body’s natural day-and-night rhythm, while stepping outdoors often encourages small amounts of movement—a walk to the mailbox, a lap around the block or a few minutes in the garden.

A change of scenery can also provide a mental pause. Instead of looking at another screen or unfinished task, you may notice the breeze, the clouds, neighborhood sounds or a familiar face passing by. Research has linked time in natural environments with possible benefits for attention, stress and mood, though experiences differ from person to person.

You do not need a hiking trail or a free afternoon. Try coffee on the porch, lunch outside, a short walk or a few quiet minutes in the yard.

Live Better This Week: The 10-Minute Outside Challenge

For seven days, spend 10 intentional minutes outdoors at roughly the same time each day.
Do not look for a major change. Simply notice your energy, focus, movement and daily rhythm.
Choose a safe setting and account for weather, sun and air-quality conditions.
Sometimes healthy living begins not by doing more—but by opening the door.

👉🏻 There’s more to this simple habit than a change of scenery. Read the full article to see how even a few intentional minutes outside can support your energy, focus, movement and sense of connection.

⚾ Messick, Bullpen Help Cleveland Extend Winning Streak

The Guardians showed they can win without relying on the long ball Tuesday, using timely hitting and sharp pitching to beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 for their third straight victory.

Austin Hedges and Petey Halpin delivered sacrifice flies in the sixth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie and giving Cleveland control. Travis Bazzana and Gabriel Arias helped create the second run with a double steal, and Bazzana added an RBI single in the seventh.

Parker Messick gave Cleveland 5 2/3 strong innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out six and did not issue a walk.

Colin Holderman recorded the final out of the sixth to earn the win. Hunter Gaddis followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Cade Smith closed the ninth for his major league-leading 29th save.

Steven Kwan doubled home Cleveland’s first run, while Brayan Rocchio added an RBI single.

The Guardians will look for a fourth consecutive win Wednesday, when Slade Cecconi faces Minnesota’s Bailey Ober at Progressive Field.

⚾ Captains Lose Six-Run Lead in 7-6 Walk-Off Defeat

The Lake County Captains built a 6-0 lead behind a strong start from Harrison Bodendorf but could not finish the job, falling 7-6 to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on a walk-off single.

Bodendorf gave Lake County 4⅓ scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out five. The Captains supported him with steady offense, scoring twice in the first inning and adding runs in the third, fourth and fifth.

Welbyn Francisca drove in two runs with a pair of singles. Jonah Advincula scored twice, while Juneiker Caceres and Garrett Howe also drove in runs.

Lake County appeared to be in control after Howe’s sacrifice fly made it 6-0 in the fifth. Fort Wayne, however, scored in each of the final four innings.

Jack Costello started the comeback with a solo home run in the seventh. The TinCaps added three runs in the eighth before tying the game on Ryan Wideman’s ninth-inning single.

Alex McCoy followed with a single to left that brought Wideman home with the winning run.

Michael Kennedy allowed seven runs, six earned, over 4⅓ innings. He walked two and struck out two.

The loss erased an otherwise encouraging night for Lake County’s offense and starting pitching. The Captains and TinCaps continue their series today in Fort Wayne.
