📰 NOPEC Sets New Electric Rates for Mentor Beginning in September
Mentor residents participating in NOPEC’s electric aggregation program will have three electricity supply-rate options beginning with their September 2026 meter read.
The new prices are:
Standard Program: 10.399 cents per kilowatt-hour
12-Month Fixed Term: 10.299 cents per kilowatt-hour
24-Month Fixed Term: 10.599 cents per kilowatt-hour
The Standard Program price will remain in effect through the June 2027 meter read. Customers who choose a fixed-term plan will lock in that rate for either 12 or 24 months.
The differences are relatively small. At 1,000 kilowatt-hours of monthly use, the supply portion would be about $103.99 under the Standard Program, $102.99 under the 12-month plan and $105.99 under the 24-month plan. Those estimates cover electricity supply only, not utility delivery charges, taxes or other items on the bill.
Eligible residents and small businesses who remain in NOPEC’s aggregation program are generally placed in the Standard Program without needing to take action. Customers interested in a fixed-term or other available option should confirm enrollment instructions and contract terms directly with NOPEC.
Residents can reach NOPEC’s 24-hour Customer Care Center at 855-667-3201. Other supplier offers can be compared through the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio’s Apples to Apples website.

🚨 UPDATED: Homemade Fireworks Seized at Mentor Condo
Mentor police said investigators seized several small bags of homemade fireworks, along with compounds and chemicals used to make fireworks, from a unit at Heatherstone Condominiums.
Detectives and the Lake County Bomb Squad executed a search warrant Wednesday, July 22, at the complex at 6400 Center Street after receiving a report of suspected illegal fireworks production.
Police said charges are pending while the investigation continues. No additional information was available as of Thursday morning.
🏡 Step Inside the 2026 Lake County YMCA Dream House in Mentor
The 2026 Lake County YMCA Dream House is now open for tours, giving residents a chance to look inside the newly built Mentor home—and enter for a chance to win it.
Located at 9026 Jackson Street, the home was built by Rick Osborne Jr. and Osborne Real Estate Services. It includes an open kitchen with island seating, a family room and dining area, a second-floor primary suite, two additional bedrooms, an attached two-car garage, a large deck and a finished lower-level entertainment space.
Tours are available Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 7 p.m. during July and August. Tickets start at $25.
Each tour ticket provides an entry for a chance to win the house. People who purchase multiple tickets may also be eligible for a separate vehicle giveaway through the YMCA’s partnership with The Chevy Network and Classic Chevrolet of Mentor.
Proceeds support Lake County YMCA programs, including child care, swim lessons, summer camps, summer learning programs, water-safety instruction, financial assistance and services for people of all abilities.

🎶 Three Free Tunes Remain - Shadow of Doubt Performs Tonight
Three free Friday-night concerts remain in Mentor’s 2026 Tunes at the Lagoons series, beginning July 24 at Mentor Lagoons Marina.
Shadow of Doubt, a Tom Petty tribute band, will perform July 24. One brings the music of U2 to the marina August 7, and Pieces of Eight closes the schedule August 21.
Each concert runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Food trucks and beverage tents open at 6 p.m., giving visitors time to find dinner, purchase refreshments and choose a place on the lawn before the music begins.
Admission and parking are free. Seating is available on the field only, so attendees should bring a lawn chair or blanket. Accessible parking is available, and attendants will be on site to direct traffic.
Beer and sparkling beverages will be sold to guests age 21 and older. Beverage tents accept cash, major credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Venmo.
Mentor Lagoons Marina is located at 8365 Harbor Drive. With no tickets or advance registration listed, the series offers residents an easy and affordable option for a summer evening outdoors.
The city has not announced the food-truck lineup for each remaining date. Visitors should check the official event listing before leaving home for any schedule or event updates.
⚾ Guardians fall to Twins in 12 innings, settle for series split
The Guardians were two outs away from securing a series win Thursday before the Minnesota Twins rallied for a 3-1 victory in 12 innings at Progressive Field.
Cleveland carried a 1-0 lead into the eighth after a dominant start from Gavin Williams. The right-hander allowed only two hits over seven scoreless innings, struck out 11 and recorded an immaculate fourth inning by striking out the side on nine pitches.
Patrick Bailey supplied Cleveland’s offense with a 420-foot solo home run off Taj Bradley in the fifth inning.
The Guardians’ bullpen could not preserve the lead. Hunter Gaddis issued two walks in the eighth, and pinch-hitter Alan Roden followed with an RBI single off closer Cade Smith to tie the game.
Cleveland missed an opportunity to score in the 11th, and Minnesota broke through one inning later. Trevor Larnach and Luke Keaschall delivered two-out RBI singles against Erik Sabrowski, giving the Twins a two-run advantage.
The Guardians managed only three hits against Bradley and five Minnesota relievers.
With the loss, Cleveland settled for a split of the four-game series. The Guardians will begin a road series Friday in Tampa Bay, with Joey Cantillo scheduled to face Shane McClanahan.

⚾ Captains Pull Away for 15-3 Win Over Fort Wayne
The Lake County Captains scored 14 unanswered runs Thursday, turning an early deficit into a 15-3 road victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
Lake County trailed 3-1 after the first inning but moved ahead for good with three runs in the third. Jeffrey Mercedes hit his eighth home run, Jace LaViolette delivered a game-tying RBI double and Welbyn Francisca followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Captains continued adding to their lead before breaking the game open with six runs in the ninth. Francisca homered and later added an RBI double, while Tyler Howard drove in two runs with a triple. Juneiker Caceres contributed a two-run double.
LaViolette opened the scoring with his 16th home run and later doubled home another run. Jonah Advincula scored three times and drove in three, including two on an eighth-inning double.
Lake County used four pitchers. Starter Will McCausland allowed three runs, two earned, over three innings. Melkis Hernández then delivered three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight. Kendeglys Virguez and Logan McGuire also worked effectively in relief.
The victory improved Lake County to 15-10, leaving the Captains 2½ games out of first place. The series continues Friday in Fort Wayne.
