A 36-year-old man suffered a significant head injury after losing control of an e-bike and falling onto a concrete sidewalk in Mentor-on-the-Lake, according to police.

The July 18 crash prompted the Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department to remind riders that helmets are important for adults as well as children.

Officer William Gainer and Detective Clay Braidic assessed the injured rider when they arrived. Police said Gainer retrieved his personal medical kit and began treating significant bleeding from the man’s head.

Two bystanders helped the officers stabilize the rider and prevent further injury until emergency medical personnel arrived. Gainer then assisted EMS in safely lifting the man onto a cot for transportation to a hospital.

Police did not release the rider’s name, the location of the crash or an update on his condition.

The department recognized Gainer and Braidic for their quick response, medical training and professionalism. Police also thanked the bystanders who stopped to help.

The incident serves as a reminder to wear a properly fitted helmet, ride responsibly, follow traffic laws and remain aware of surrounding traffic, pedestrians and road conditions.

Ohio law requires operators and passengers on Class 3 e-bikes to wear an approved helmet, regardless of age.

Hero Day returns to Mentor on Friday, July 31, offering individuals with developmental disabilities and their families a relaxed way to meet local first responders before an emergency occurs.

The free event, hosted by the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities/Deepwood, runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Broadmoor School, 8090 Broadmoor Road.

Attendees can explore emergency vehicles, visit interactive displays and information tables, and enjoy food, ice cream, activities and balloon animals. Fire departments, law enforcement agencies, crisis teams and community partners will participate.

Organizers say positive, non-emergency interactions can build trust, improve communication and help individuals feel more comfortable when emergency assistance is needed. About 200 participants are expected.

Guests may also donate nonperishable food, including coffee, peanut butter, jelly and sugar, for the Salvation Army’s new emergency canteen vehicle.

The City of Mentor published a notice Wednesday listing properties with estimated street-lighting assessments above $500. The notice is part of the city’s legally required process for allocating certain street-lighting costs to properties considered to receive a special benefit.

A simple emergency kit and a practiced exit plan can make it much easier to protect every pet when the household has to move quickly.

Emergencies do not always look like major disasters. A gas leak, apartment fire, extended power outage or evacuation order can require a household to leave with little warning. When pets are part of the family, preparation can prevent the frantic search for carriers, medication and records.

Start with the hardest pet to move. Keep one suitable carrier for every cat and small animal, plus a secure leash, harness or restraint for each dog. Store everything where it can be reached quickly—not behind seasonal boxes or at the back of the garage. Make sure carriers close properly and identification tags are readable.

Next, build one portable supply kit. Include food, water, bowls, waste bags or litter supplies, essential medications, a basic pet first-aid kit and a familiar towel or blanket. Add current veterinary records, medication instructions, microchip information, emergency contacts and recent photographs of each pet. Ask your veterinarian how prescriptions should be stored and whether an emergency supply is appropriate; do not repackage or stockpile medication without guidance.

Then decide where everyone could go. Many evacuation centers cannot accept household pets, so identify at least one nearby option and one destination outside the immediate area. Confirm pet policies, size or species restrictions and vaccination requirements before relying on a hotel, boarding facility, relative or friend.

Finally, practice one calm departure. Assign who will collect each pet, who will grab the kit and who will confirm that no animal has been left behind. A short practice run may reveal a hiding cat, an outgrown harness or supplies scattered across the house.

You do not need a complicated disaster system. You need a plan the household can remember under stress:

The Cleveland Guardians claimed bragging rights in Ohio on Wednesday night, defeating the Cincinnati Reds 6-1 to secure the season series and win the Ohio Cup.

Kyle Manzardo powered the offense with his 13th home run of the season and finished with two RBIs. His seventh-inning solo shot marked his second homer in as many games and his fourth against Cincinnati this year.

Joey Cantillo gave Cleveland four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out eight. He escaped several early threats and helped keep the Reds off the scoreboard until the sixth.

After missing a bases-loaded opportunity in the third, the Guardians broke through with four runs in the fifth. Travis Bazzana delivered an RBI single, while two bases-loaded walks and a Patrick Bailey sacrifice fly stretched the lead to 4-0.

Cincinnati’s two errors helped Cleveland take control, and Erik Sabrowski earned the win in relief.

Noelvi Marte drove in the Reds’ only run, but the Guardians answered with two late runs to close out a convincing victory.

Cleveland returns home Friday to face Arizona, with Tanner Bibee scheduled to start.

The Lake County Captains built an early three-run lead Wednesday afternoon, but 16 walks and a five-run seventh inning allowed the South Bend Cubs to rally for an 8-6 victory in Eastlake.

Jonah Advincula opened the scoring with his first home run of the season in the bottom of the first. Welbyn Francisca added his eighth homer in the fourth, and Advincula was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Lake County a 3-0 advantage.

Starter Nelson Keljo kept South Bend scoreless despite issuing four walks in three innings. He allowed one hit and struck out seven, repeatedly escaping trouble before turning the game over to the bullpen.

South Bend erased the lead against Will McCausland, who allowed five runs, four earned, over three innings. Lake County briefly moved back ahead, 4-3, on Advincula’s RBI double in the sixth.

The game turned in the seventh. South Bend tied the score, moved ahead on a bases-loaded walk and broke the game open with Josiah Hartshorn’s three-run triple.

Donovan Zsak was charged with a blown save after allowing three runs and walking six in two innings. The Captains scored in the seventh and eighth but could not complete the comeback.

Lake County fell to 16-14 in the second half, two games out of first place, and 53-41 overall. The series continues Thursday at 7 p.m. in Eastlake.
